by Matthew Panting
Welling's pre-season campaign continued with a home defeat to a
strong Millwall team on Tuesday night.
The Lions fielded several first-teamers, including Gary
Alexander and Alan Dunne, and raced into a two-goal lead in front
of a healthy crowd of 1,103.
Welling fielded a strong starting line-up before ringing the
changes after the break.
Luis Cumbers had a goal disallowed for offside before Millwall
went ahead in the 17th minute when Alexander's low shot was saved
and Kiernan Hughes-Mason tucked home the rebound.
Forward Alexander was involved again in their second goal just
after the half-hour, nodding on for Chris Hackett to score from the
edge of the area.
Welling pulled a goal back on 35 minutes when Lee Clarke found
Jack Oberstellar, who went past his man before firing a delightful
goal into the top corner.
Chances were few and far between after the break but Wings boss
Jamie Day (pictured), who handed a debut to new signing Loike
Pires, had another look at Kane Rice, Jordan Johnson, Anthony
Achempong, Femi Omogbehin and Junior Dadson.
Missing from the squad were the injured Andy Sambrook and AFC
Hornchurch-bound James Lawson.
