Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler still hopeful that Barry Fuller can return for their League 2 opener

Gillingham captain Barry Fuller has been given a 50-50 chance of making it for the start of the new league season.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler feels that Fuller could yet defy the experts who had warned him that he faces around a month of the sidelines.

Fuller (pictured) picked up knee ligament damage in the pre-season friendly at Ebbsfleet last week.

Hessenthaler said: "They (doctors) are saying four weeks but Barry is quite a quick healer so he still could be available for Saturday week and we’ll wait and see.

"He could be back - It’s 50-50 at the moment."

Fuller missed the final few weeks of last season with a broken nose.

The Gills start their League 2 campaign at home against Cheltenham on Saturday, August 7.

Who would you like to see replace Fuller if he can't make the start of the season? Comment below.

I personally think that Jack Payne plays well at right back. He proved himself in the home game against Leeds, despite his size he won a number of headers and held his own very well. I agree that Fuller is overrated and if he wasn't the captain, I think he would struggle to make the first team.

Southall should be first choice at right-back. Fuller is overrated.

Get the Trigger in there, we have waited for 2 years for a quality corner or free kick to be taken! We so wont miss Adam Miller! However time to move on and forget Miller. Up the Gills.
