Upchurch Cricket Club consider Kent Village League appeal

Cricket

Upchurch are considering an appeal after being suspended from the Kent Village League for the season for fielding an ineligible player.

The club were among the leaders in Division 1 but have seen their record expunged after allegations they deliberately fielded an unnamed overseas player under another player’s name.

However, Upchurch chairman Jerry Overbury claimed: "We asked the league if the overseas player could play and the league initially couldn’t give us a definitive answer.

"We continued to play him but once the league decided and informed us that we could not play him, we stopped playing him. We did not play him after we were told by the league that we couldn’t."

Mr Overbury added: "We feel we have been appallingly treated by the league.

"We are thinking about an appeal. We have been suspended for the season but we are considering going to a better standard of cricket, maybe applying to the Lords East Kent League.

"We have been in the Kent Village League for a number of years and as such we are very disappointed with the way we have been treated.

"The other clubs will miss out on revenue from losing a match against us. I think some people have maybe got a problem with the club. The bigger we’ve got the more people seem to take umbrage with us.

"We run four sides on a Saturday and we have 54 players so we use the Sunday cricket to make sure everyone gets a game.

"We’ll play some friendlies while we decide where we go from here."

Jerry Overbury's response says it all about why many clubs do not like Upchurch.

The fact Upchurch played their overseas player under a different name shows that they knew he should not be playing. If they thought he was ok to play, they would have played him under his actual name.

Instead they tried to pull the wool over the league's eyes and got found out. And now, rather than being contrite they go on the attack and accuse the league of not being able to give them a "definitive answer". I find that very hard to believe. The league rules are perfectly clear and the league is very well run. I am sure they will have been given a "definitive answer"- it was just not the answer they wanted.

It is incredible they they think they have been appallingly treated.

They are not unpopular because of their size and it is not because of their successes (which have been sporadic at best), it is because of their high handed, arrogant, hubristic attitude, which stinks.

The East Kent League are welcome to them.

The fact of the matter is that the KVL rule on overseas players is quite clear and Upchurch should not have used the player in question until they had received clear permission to do so. That's the correct way, not play him until told not to. It's not a question of them becoming the Millwall of Kent cricket ("everyone hates us but we don't care") but a case of doing things correctly as other clubs do.

Given the inflated opinion they clearly have of themselves and their willingness to play outside of the rules i was just wondering why they haven't won more titles??

What happens when you do not use your words wisely and talk until there is nothing left to say? Verbal Diarrhea is nothing to joke about and is unpleasant to everyone who falls victim as a listener.

Knowing when to stop, when to start, when to initiate, and when to close a conversation is an act of discernment few people possess, otherwise it is just verbal diarrhea, useless words no one wants to hear. Here are a few different types of people who use more words and thoughts than necessary when communicating. Maybe you are one of these, and maybe you are a victim listener of some of these. Always remember, Just because you can talk, doesn’t mean you always should. In the words of Rebecca West, “There is no such thing as conversation. It is an illusion. There are intersecting monologues, that’s all.”
