Andrew Symonds produced his second
match-winning performance in the space of a week against former
club Kent Spitfires as Surrey Lions won by 38 runs in the Friends
Provident t20 South Group at Beckenham on Wednesday.
Symonds has happy memories of the
ground, blasting an unbeaten 96 off only 37 balls with 14 fours and
three sixes on his Kent debut against Hampshire seven years ago
this month.
The Australian all-rounder followed
up his 63 at The Oval on Friday, with career best figures of 5-18,
after hitting 31 in 16 balls.
Having won the toss, Surrey – who
beat Kent at The Oval five days earlier – made 201-4. Youngster
Jason Roy, playing only his third Twenty20 match, finished 101 not
out for the visitors.
Spitfires never recovered from
another poor start after they lost skipper Rob Key for a duck and
Geraint Jones to Chris Tremlett inside the opening two overs.
In-form Darren Stevens (7) was
third out with the total on 33 and their victory target of 202 a
long way off.
Martin van Jaarsveld (82 off 49
balls) hit seven fours and three sixes to give the Beckenham crowd
some entertainment while Azhar Mahmood (34 from 23 balls) offered
some resistance.
But Spitfires were well behind the
rate going into the final five overs. Symonds polished off the
tail, including Matt Coles who was stumped off the last ball, as
Spitfires slipped to their sixth defeat in eight starts, leaving
their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals even more distant.
