I guess I made a pretty good impact after stepping off the
substitutes’ bench at Southend last Friday.
I set up Akpo Sodje for the equaliser and then grabbed the
winner in stoppage time!
Of course, it was great to be the hero at the end of the night,
but I was also pleased for Akpo.
He got another goal against Brighton a few days earlier, so he’s
on a high at the minute. All strikers need goals to get their
confidence up, and the more confident our strikers, the better
things are for the club.
Of course, I was buzzing to get on the scoresheet, too – to the
extent that I left the pitch without my shirt, even though it was
pretty cold on the Essex coast late on a Friday night.
To come from behind and win, especially in the last few minutes
of the game, was really important for us, and a few of the lads
threw their shirts into the away end after the game. We had a vocal
following at Roots Hall, and the fans behind the goal we were
attacking in the second half certainly played their part.
The goal was my second for Charlton since I joined on loan from
Sheffield United in January, and only the fifth of my career, three
of which have been against Southend, so I guess they’ll be pleased
to see the back of me this season.
I actually said to myself before Friday’s game that I always
manage to score against Southend so, after being left out of the
starting XI, I was itching to get onto the pitch.
It was a great end to an eventful week for me. I had a brilliant
game against Yeovil seven days earlier, but the midweek match
against Brighton was one of those matches every player has when
things just don’t go your way.
I had a word with the gaffer in training and he said a few
things about my gameplay; he told me what he wants me to do and
then gave me the bad news about Southend, and that he was putting
me on the bench.
Midway through the second half, however, he told me to get ready
and then to get on and go win us the game.
As I was waiting to come on, I remember thinking that it was a
chance to show everyone what I can do.
Football is all how about how you react – to defeats and
disappointments and to wins and success.
I was disappointed not to start, but wanted to show the gaffer
that I should have started and give him something to think about
for Saturday’s game against Stockport.
After the euphoria at Southend, everyone will be raring to go
this weekend, especially after a few results went our way last
weekend, but we can’t afford to take anything for granted just
because Stockport are at the bottom of the table. Just look what
happened against Brighton!
I will be doing everything I can to be selected for the game,
and I’m really enjoying my time at Charlton.
It’s my best season in terms of fitness and it feels like I’m
finally finding my feet within the game and becoming more mature.
Hopefully, that will be to the club’s benefit and we can get the
promotion that everyone wants.
