Gillingham chairman Paul Scally to speak to Dover Athletic chairman Jim Parmenter over move for Andy Hessenthaler

Andy Hessenthaler with Dover chairman Jim Parmenter

Dover chairman Jim Parmenter says he expects to have talks with Gillingham counterpart Paul Scally "later today"  following fresh newspaper reports linking Whites boss Andy Hessenthaler with the vacant managerial position at Priestfield.

The reports claimed that the two chairman had been in contact over the weekend but Mr Parmenter, who brought Hessenthaler to Crabble three years ago, said: "I haven't spoken to Paul Scally but I am expecting to have talks with him later today (Monday).

"There's nothing more I can add at the moment but who knows what will happen in the murky depths of football?"

The Gills are looking for a replacement for Mark Stimson who left Priestfield last week following their relegation from League 1.

Hessenthaler was previously in charge of Gillingham from June 2000 to November 2004 and carried on playing for the Gills after he was relieved of his managerial duties.

The 44-year-old finished his Football League playing career with Barnet in 2007 and then became player-manager of Dover, where he led the club to successive Ryman League promotions before missing out on a third promotion in the Blue Square South play-offs last month.

Is Hess the right man for Gillingham? How big a blow would it be for Dover to lose their manager? Use our comments section to have your say.

i think its best that when managers sign contracts , they should see them out instead of jumping ship halfway through . theres no loyalty anymore and as soon as a bigger club offering more money shows an interest . they up sticks and go only to fall flat on there face and lose credibilty , i think hess is doing a fantastic job with dover and if he goes i will lose all respect for him , i hope he sees sense . stay with dover and reap the rewards hess .

The problem Hess had before was he had his mates in the squad and wouldn't replace them.

The problem this time would be that he would have his mates on the coaching staff instead.

Southall has already been mentioned despite having no qualifications and experience, Ashby has been making favourable noises about Hess, and no doubt Paul Smith is sitting waiting by the phone!

    Never Go Back!!

Find a manager with experience and a good contact book.

Not only is Hess the right man for the job, he is clearly the only manager with championship credentials that scally could afford. His only drawbacks at the time he was releived last time was his familiarity with his players who had also been his team mates and a lack of vision by PDS who should have provided the funds to begin replacing an ageing team, Hess will re-unite the fans with the club and increase season ticket sales

I have always believed that Hessy has all of the necessary tools to be a top flight Manager.

I believe that a major problem during his last stint as Gills Manager was that he was expected to manage what really was a group of his mates which must be quite difficult.

I strongly believe that Hessy IS the right man for the job and that this will be proven should he take the job.

Andy and his team have done a fantastic job for Dover Athletic over the last three seasons. Back to back promotions and a play off is a great return for the money that has been invested in him.

From what I have seen and experienced, he has always acted in a very professional manner and thoroughly deserves the chance to return to full time management.

Good luck and thanks for what you have done.

    Cheers
