Wycombe 3 Gillingham 0

Gillingham fan after relegation at Wycombe

Gillingham were relegated back to League 2 after slipping to a three-goal defeat at Wycombe on Saturday.

The Gills ended the first half a goal behind after Matt Phillips struck in injury time and hopes of ending their miserable away record were in tatters when Alan Bennett headed home a second after the break. Kevin Betsy netted a third for a team who went into the game already relegated.

A win for Exeter at Huddersfield and three points for Tranmere at Stockport condemned the Gills to relegation after just one season in League 1.

Gills boss Mark Stimson admitted; "We thought it was going to be okay because we had a positive team again and we looked to take the game to them.

League 1 table 2009/10"Wycombe, though, played the game with no fear and I'm sure that if they play like that again next season then they'll win the division by Christmas.

"We didn't get anywhere near them and we didn't match them in any department."

A dour opening half saw the Gills create few goalscoring opportunities but they remained just above the relegation zone because Exeter were being held to a draw by Huddersfield.

A goal for Exeter, however, would have changed everything and put the Gills in the drop zone. With Gillingham failing to do their bit they were relying on results elsewhere.

Alan Julian was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half and he had to get down low to make saves from Phillips and Lewis Montrose.

The Gills’ best chance came from Simeon Jackson after 18 minutes but after good control he shot wide.

Wycombe’s goal came in the first minute of added on time before the break and it came straight from a Gillingham attack. Phillips ran at the defence and shot across Julian to put the visitors in a worrying situation heading into the second half.

Gillingham should have been level after 59 minutes but Jackson missed from just a yard out after John Nutter put in a great cross.

Dennis Oli also fluffed a golden opportunity moments later and those missed chances proved costly as Wycombe scored a second on 64 minutes with a header from Alan Bennett.

Jon-Paul Pittman thought he had scored the third but that was ruled out for offside and at the other end chances continued to go awry, with Jackson firing wide.

After 72 minutes Wycombe had their third when Betsy smashed in a shot that went past Julian following a deflection from Mark Bentley.

Luke Rooney and Chris Dickson were brought on but they were unable to do anything to change the outcome.

With 10 minutes to go a goal at Exeter left the Gills in the bottom four and heading back to League 2.

Gills: Julian, Palmer, Nutter, Gowling, Bentley, Weston, Miller, Barcham, Oli (Rooney 76mins), Howe (Dickson 79mins), Jackson. Subs not used: Royce, Palmer, Jackman, Wynter, Maher.

Wycombe: Heaton, Hunt, Woodman, Bennett, Pittman, Montrose (Ainsworth 76mins), Phillips, Mousinho, McLeod (Harris 62mins), Betsy, Kelly. Subs not used: Oliver, Keates, Harrold, Westwood.

Attendance: 7,110.

how are we expected to win away from home when the manager is so negative about it. his many public comments, pre and post match, are just bizarre. after we got spanked at southampton he came on radio kent and said words to the effect of "we won't come to the big clubs liek southampton, norwich, leeds and charlton every week. some weeks we will get to go to the likes of stockport, wycombe, brentford and exter and pick up wins and points" - to me that is him saying we shouldn't expect to beat these teams! god knows what that does to the players' confidence!!!! he just seems to get all starry eyed at the prospect of playing the "bigger" clubs, proving he still thinks like a non league manager, as does his team selction and coaching, in going for all "effort and passion etc" players and not those with ability.

we deserve better, especially given our very high above inflation season ticket prices. we shouldn't be suffering as a result of his learning his trade (slowly and badly).

he will either stay or the chairman will reluctantly let him go but blame the fans for forcing his hand.

I can't see how Stimson can remain as Manager. If he does, the Club simply won't sell anymore season tickets. Nobody has a good word to say about this dreadful tactician. This is the main reason for our away record. Not injuries, not confidence, and not lack of motivation as Scally would have you believe. Simply a Manager out of his depth in League One.

I love to watch the gills , i am a season ticket holder with my sons , i was happy to give Stimson a chance , but i think its time to say good bye , quite a few players also need to go , surely Mr Scally it is time to sort this mess out , new manager , keep the best players and buy new!! . Dennehy was a great player, more of him . Next seasons tickets have just cost me over £500 , now we are back in div 2 , what say you Mr Scally when you are in Dubai in the sun , tell us all what you intend to do for our club for the future , are you really here for gillingham football club or is it just the money , will you invest in new management ? will you spend on some new players and get us back into the championship? i think not !!

Absolutely gutted to go down, but for all those slagging off the "non league players",we did not lose to any of the top nine at home.Whoever is in charge for next season, there is the nucleus of a good squad.Yes the away form is baffling, but surely next season it must improve. And yes I have renewed my season ticket. No matter who is in charge or what division we are in,Gillingham are my club and always will be.

Very sad day, but sadly inevitable and predictable.

I hate to say it, but we deserved to go down given our away form all season, and the fact that our destiny was in our own hands yesterday - playing a team already relegated - and we couldnt even hold a draw!!

Yes, its down to 11 players on the pitch in any game, but there was none of 'legendary' gills fight or spirit - the players seem to have lost confidence when playing away, and that is where any manager needs to earn his salary - remotivating, inspiring, encouraging players - our away form says it all this year!!

A lot of people have been against the manager from day one and didnt give him a chance to prove himself - unfortunately yesterday's result proves that to manage in League 1 is a step too far/too soon for Mr Stimson. I have no doubt he is a good Conference/League 2 manager - but we don't want to be playing at that level!!

We need someone to drag us back up to League 1 (Stimson may well be the man for that), but then need to change to someone who can keep us there, consolidate, and then push for Championship. Unfortunately, yesterday's outcome has delayed that for another year!

    Up The Gills!

    so predictable

we are in a worse position than 2 years ago, we won't have the same quality of players come august that we did last time.

wait and see as the likes of fuller, miller all turn down their new reduced deals. jackman to hand in transfer request as he did at northampton.

that said, what more proof do people need that except jackson, none of stimson's non leauge signings are good enough for league one?

julian - a good shot stopper but nothing else in his locker, managed to injure richards for the season and gave away the penalty against southampton, unable to command his area/defenders/read the game
oli - impact sub at best, just miles out of his league at this level
nutter - always a yard off the pace, didn't even close their man down for the first goal yesterday
miller - a yard off the pace both mentally and physically, cannot read the game and so does not get into make the tackles he is required to as by the time he has figured out what is going on it is too late, has given away more goals than he has scored, including against norwich and southampton, unable to find that final pass also

the "quality" players he signed to improve the squad - jackman, maher, dickson, palmer have all performed way below their expected levels, or not been given a proper chance, clearly a case of him being unable to bring out the best in them. or are they just poor anyway, in which case, he cannot judge a player's potential/ability, either way it questions his abilities as a manager. he reverted back to his non league stevenage/grays journeymen as he has this issue with "effot, desire, passion, committment", yet all of these things do not get you over the finish line without ability, as was proven 2 years ago, and again now. that said, he should watch the replay of miller after losing the ball against norwich, he just stood there and watched them run away with it! so where was his passion and effort there stimson?

at least in 2005 we were playing out of our skins. 2 years ago you gave stimson the benefit of the doubt, though it was clear then that most of his players were simply not good enough for this level, squad plares at best.

to go to stockport and blame the pitch for being unable to score, when every other side has done so, was laughable.

to lose at tranmere when at the time they were ther for the taking by everyone else, laughable.

    the list is endless.

our season ticket prices are high for league one, let alone league two. time for mr scally to prove he cares about the fans, and club. time to stand up and be counted. he ha sbeen surprisingly reticent (or unsurprisingly) so far on the whole relegation issue.

if it were not the the rip off matchday prices i would be stopping my credit card payment for my season ticket that's for sure.

as the conservative's put it: "time for a change" - maybe we could nick some of their boardings and put them up outside the stadium?

if we do not hang onto barcham, weston, bentley, jackman etc we really will be looking over our shoulder and joining grimsby.

It is quite obvious to me why the Gills are relegated. A side that has a very good home record but with an absolutely appalling away record clearly indicates the obvious. A bunch of of journey men above average Sunday league players with a manger with no tactical savvy who commands next to no respect in dressing room!In particular during these clear financially challenging times both management and players should be ashamed with the disdain they have appropriated towards the loyal Gills fan. I hope all those responsible for this debacle are suitably punished!! Shame on you all because you have failed to see and failed to give respect to the fact that a football club is all about its fans not its current players.

As i said in my last comment Gills away form scared me,but three nil away to the already relegated Wycombe,is just not good enough,we can all blame the manager the chairman who ever! but on the field of play for ninety minutes the players wearing the gills strip are to blame. And for 26 away games the results were are downfall. The gills will bounce back but not with this current squad or management set up.
I have been following the gills since 1964 and have never seen this kind of away form from any previous gills squad.

Surely the players need to take some of the blame for this. Gillinghams home form suggests that they are more than capable of competing in this divison and thus with such a poor away form, surely this suggests a problem with the attitude of the players.

No more excuses Mr Scally, if you want to keep hard core fans, a good manager is needed and a good set of players ... no more excuses ... the age old questions from many people I talk to where has all the money gone ... nothing has been reinvested into the squad .. what about all the money spent on preparing for a new ground, where's the new ground ... I could go on forever ... until we get
a new chairman, or Mr Scally starts putting his hands in his pockets we are going no where!!

Congratulations Stimson!!!! You are the only manager in our league history to get us relegated twice. You need to resign now as your position is noe untenable. No away wins, tactically inept, clueless in interviews, alienating supporters????? Its seems you have no clue and the sooner you are out of our club the better. You have taken us backwards and your only achievement was to scrape the playoffs last season in a very poor division. We need to stop looking at this through rose-tinted glasses and realise that the management team are clueless. Either you are held accountable for not motivating players or for bringing in substandard footnallers who are not good enough.
