Beyond the Boundary: Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens writes exclusively for the KM Group

You can’t have missed the allegations
surrounding the last England/Pakistan Test match in the news. I
have to say, I was disappointed with the whole situation.
First nobody can take that
record-breaking partnership away from Jonathan Trott and Stuart
Broad. The allegations had no affect on that partnership - they
were still trying to get them out.

But it is disappointing to hear about
all this. Everyone knows this sort of thing has been going on for
years but nothing major has ever been done about it.
This should be an ICC call, not the
Pakistani board. There should be rules to deal with this kind of
thing. If found guilty, players should be banned for life. There
needs to be a severe punishment.
It is criminal and it is embarrassing
for cricket. It puts all of us players in the spotlight. Nobody
knows what’s real and what’s not in the game.
On Tuesday, Azhar Mahmood came up to
me and Keysey and said ‘I’ll have to take care not to bowl a
no-ball or a wide today.’
We all had a little giggle about that
one!
I’m disappointed the club have not
offered Amjad Khan a new contract. I’m sure if people had a choice
of who to face as an opening bowler, Amjad Khan or Darren Stevens,
they’d all go for me. What does that say for us next season?
We’ve been told we will be going with
14 players. I understand there are financial difficulties but if
you get a couple of injuries then you’re going to be relying too
heavily on kids to come in.
I’m nearing the end of my career and
want to be in the mix to win trophies. I’ve loved my time at Kent
and I don’t want to leave but I’m not sure if we’re going to be
competing next season. I only have a short time left and it may be
that I have to look at my options.
To be perfectly honest despite our two
good wins at the weekend, we’re still unsure about what we would
have to do to qualify in the CB40.
Some are saying best-runner-up is
decided on run-rate, others that it is on games won.
It would be good to know in advance
but no matter what, we have to go out and beat Durham on
Saturday.
We’ll go out and try to enjoy it and
what will be, will be.
