Maidstone United takeover could be complete within days as fresh talks take place following Lashings deal collapse

Maidstone chairman Paul Bowden-Brown

by Alex Hoad

Maidstone United could be in new hands within days after fresh takeover talks began after the collapse of negotiations with Lashings.

Stones chairman Paul Bowden-Brown has been "burning the midnight oil" with leading investor Oliver Ash and it is believed a deal which would allow the Paris-based businessman to take control could be sealed next week.

The deal would probably see Mr Ash replace Mr Bowden-Brown as chairman with general manager Bill Williams taking over the day-to-day running of club affairs.

Mr Bowden-Brown has agreed to write off his own investment in the club –believed to be around £400,000 – which he has put in since taking over the Stones in 1992, as well as further funds put in by his son Richard over the past six months.

Mr Bowden-Brown has also reduced the value of his shareholding to nil in a bid to smooth the path for a takeover.

In his programme notes for Saturday home game with AFC Hornchurch, Mr Bowden-Brown says: "Since Sunday I have spoken in great detail with Oliver and Bill with regard to the options available to us to make sure the continued future of our great club.

He added: "The shareholders are looking at what further arrangements can be agreed so that a way forward can be reached quickly to satisfy us all and work within the FA guidelines.

"Whatever happens, be assured we are burning the midnight oil to make sure we find a satisfactory conclusion to this matter, all based on what is best for the club and its supporters and not on individual needs or demands."

How many times has Bowden Brown said Williams "is taking over the day-to-day running of club affairs" in the last five years?
He seems to say it every six months! If williams is the general manager what has he actually been doing all this time?!?!?

Or the other alternative would be a Folb/Ash partnership, but I doubt if that would happen, although Oliver Ash did say in a post on the now defunked forum the he would like to have done a deal with David Folb..

I don't care if it's Mr Folb or Mr Ash who takes over as long as they have the drive to bring MUFC home. Mr Folb would have the drive due to being local/having contacts and reputation (some may argue if that's a good thing). Mr Ash came to our club at a desperate time and helped. I would be pleased if he manages to take over the club as I think his sole aim is to bring the club home due to the nature of the business he runs. With 25% of the club he had little control - with 50% plus who knows what could happen.

So less of the Mr Ash bashing please - I for one am happy he is showing an interest as it would be much easier for him to just walk away and put it down to experience.

More false hopes?, we have had to endure years of this spin and hype. A lot of the fans wanted Folb as he has a proven record with sports/business, plus he is a local man who would have had the club back in Maidstone. Oliver Ash has been on board for 2yrs and we are further away from Maidstone now then when he came..
