Bury 5 Gills 4 - Hessenthaler's reaction

Andy Hessenthaler

by Matthew Panting

Frustrated Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler laid the blame firmly at the door of his defence after the Gills lost 5-4 in a roller-coaster game at Bury on Saturday.

Gills conceded five goals and, despite scoring more times in the second half than they previously had all season, their long wait for an away win continued.

"It's a manager's nightmare," confessed Hessenthaler (pictured): "It was such a roller-coaster game. The players should be ashamed of the way they played in the first half.

"Since I've taken over they've given me everything, the performances have been good and I've said that to them - but we can't play like we did in the first half.

"We conceded a goal through poor defending, had no urgency and the second goal was never a penalty, was it?

"That (decision) disappoints me as it came down to that when you look at the scoreline at the end of the game.

"It was a poor decision but we can't start talking about the referee, we need to talk about ourselves. If you defend like that you're not going to win any games."

What is your reaction to Hessenthaler's damning verdict? Have your say below.

Hessenthaler - you're deluded. You should never have come back from the Kent sunday league.

before anyone comments along the lines of the usual diatribe of those in denial such as for example, "early days still", "injuries", "give them time" etc etc etc, I would advice you to confront reality. Its dismal and best to hope for is mid table and survival. Despite witnessing Gills score 4 yesterday I am appalled at effort and quality of the team!!! So what they scored 4 away from home? they conceded 5. These are sunday league players playing many divisions above their standard.Hessy really needs an experienced right hand man because the only way to compensate the many deficiencies of this collection of "players" is by tactical means! It really is shocking!!!

sorry hess but the blame firmly lies at your door.

yet again the starting line up and formation was a joke with players out of position and akinfenwa isolated as the lone striker yet again. he then proved this by changing it around in the second half, thought taking off lawrence and leaving on gowling and sinclair was shicking as quite simply both these players are a liability.

both sinclair and cronin are way out of their depth at this level, if hess really thought they were going to cut the mustard it seriously questions his judgement. after all it is rare a club signs so many of it's summer trialists. we were spolity with simon royce last time we were in this league, neither of the current goalclowns are anywhere near the backbone that royce was, even on a bad day for him!

fuller should of started the game at right back with lawrence in the centre, in a 442, as 451 simply does not work, proven time and time again. at the moment mark robson is looking a huge loss as other than having a big gob what has ian hendon offered!

early days i know, but we are 10% of the season in and have we got got 10% of the points needed for promotion? no!

time for the chairman to put his money where his mouth is a sign a decent keeper on loan until jan when he should buy one and a couple of defenders, and pay off 2 or 3 whilst he is at it. he actually supported stimson more financially then he has done hess, who had money to buy all the players he wanted and pay off those he didn't, what happened tot he jackson fee?

Didn`t go to the game but listened to it. Everyone is getting on Hessy`s back already and I agree they have a right to moan after all the players (a couple of exceptions) have so far not only let themselves down but have let Hessy down, more importnatly let the Fans down and have been a disgrace to Gillingham football club. I personally am still proud to shout out that I support the Gills and I urge all supports to go down there to our homes games and show the rest of the football league that We shall stand together and sing and shout and show the players what commitment is.......Up the Gills
