Gillingham strikers Adebayo Akinfenwa and Mark McCammon impress boss Andy Hessenthaler with second-half showing at Bury

Strikers Adebayo Akinfenwa and Mark McCammon have given Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler food for thought after their second-half showing at Bury on Saturday.

Akinfenwa, pictured, and McCammon played together with devastating effect as the Gills took their goal tally for the season from three in all competitions to seven, on the back of a first half when they never looked like scoring.

"Food for thought with them two, definitely," admitted Hessenthaler.

"They are a couple of beasts. Adebayo Akinfenwa has scored and also set up Danny Spiller. Mark McCammon is what he is – he will flick things on and cause problems, and he got the corner for the first goal."

The Gills boss is also hoping to add Cody McDonald to his attacking options by the weekend after the forward failed a late fitness test at Bury, while the injured trio of Curtis Weston, Stanley Aborah and Dennis Oli are all hoping to play a part in the reserve game at home to Brentford on Wednesday (kick-off 2pm).

"Hopefully it will be positive on the injury front and it will give us more options," added Hessenthaler.

Barryrj, pretty footballing sides are no good in this division, you need physical players. That's how Pulis got us up with the likes of Onuora, John Gayle, Fortune-West, Akinbiyi etc. The standard of football is poor, you need players like McCammon and Akinfenwa who can look after themselves

"They're a couple of beasts". It's good to see that Andy Hessenthaler has set his heart on bringing beautiful, cultured football back to the Priestfield Stadium!

How does McCammon still get anywhere near the bench, let alone the starting XI?

He is a waste of wages.
    Hopeless donkey.

this could be the answer actually. two big strong guys upfront with a nippy little attacking midfielder sitting behind. Either Weston or Rooney or ideally play a 433 and use McDonald when the little darling is fit, with payne, palmer and weston in midfield. Fuller would have his work cut out though cos he would have to be up n down alot
