Kent unlikely to field overseas player next season

Kent may operate without an overseas import next summer and their financial situation will impact on other player recruitment.

Reserve wicketkeeper Paul Dixey is the latest player to leave the club, after having his contract cancelled. He follows Amjad Khan, James Hockley, Rob Ferley, Warren Lee and Phil Edwards out of St Lawrence.

Team director Paul Farbrace said: "We are in a tough position and until the club get on a stronger, better financial footing, we are going to have to make do with what we have got and fight on.

"There are no plans to bring anyone in and there’s no point even looking to bolster the squad.

"We haven’t begun to look at overseas players and at this stage it is unlikely we will but that’s not confirmed."

What do you think about Kent potentially not having an overseas player next season? Comment below.

Did Farbrace not say only a few days ago on the BBC that they were looking at bringing Ntini back again next year? This has long been the problem with Kent: the constant contradictions.

This is a real chicken and and egg situation. Dont bring in a player from overseas and save money. This in turn allows for more chances for young English players to improve and maybe stars of the future.
But sport is all about the now. Continue to lose and not qualify for the one day finals and the crowds will drop off, which obviously means a drop in gate money. It also means that sky wont want to televise matches as much which also means a loss of revenue.
The club should concentrate on the one day format of the game because that is where the money is. Traditionalists will say the 4 day game is the best, but where are the crowds? Aim for one day glory and the money will be there.

There being honest I suppose. But although denied its likely that more players will leave at the end if the season. I can only see attendance diminishing next year. Where will this money come from? Not gate receipts surely? I am mot too worried about having an overseas player but its worrying what will be put out on the field next year?

Bandara has not been setting the cricketing world alight anyway. So it may give an English player a chance. Who would be available anyway. No one of any real talent.

One way or another this season has turned out to be Kent's annus horribilis. Too many mistakes have been made on the financial front - and they have to be sorted. There is enough talent in the Kent side to ensure a satisfactory season next year (provided the top players perform)and the loss of an overseas star (although disappointing) should not be crucial.
