Crewe 1 Gillingham 2

Danny Spiller is mobbed by his team mates after putting Gillingham 2-0 ahead at Crewe. Picture: Barry Goodwin.

Gillingham made it two league wins from two after taking the spoils in their game at Crewe.

Goals from Chris Whelpdale and Danny Spiller had given the Gills a two goal advantage.

Crewe pulled one back in the second half through Shaun Miller and the goal breathed life into the hosts, who up until then had looked poor.

The Gills hung on in the end to win the game.

Gillingham had struck twice in two minutes to claim the first half advantage.

The opening goal from Whelpdale, after 23 minutes, was a stunner as he collected the ball up on the edge of the box, picked his spot, and pinged it into the top corner.

Gillingham’s 297 travelling fans were in dream land just 60 seconds later when Joe Martin’s cross eluded Danny Kedwell but found Spiller. He took the ball down on his chest before rifling it past a stunned Steve Phillips in the Crewe goal.

Whelpdale lasted 10 more minutes before hobbling off with a dead leg.

Crewe came into the game in the latter stages of the second half and Gills keeper Ross Flitney needed to be alert. He held Ashley Westwood’s powerful shot and watched as both Shaun Miller and Adam Dugdale missed by a fraction.

The Gills seemed content with the two goal advantage at the start of the second half and kept Crewe at a safe distance.

Crewe had barely had a sniff of the goal before a long ball forward fell to the feet of Miller and he smashed home from close range to halve the deficit with 15 minutes left.

A minute later and Crewe almost levelled, denied only by a double clearance off the line by Jack Payne.

Crewe were putting on the pressure and Barry Fuller was next to rescue the Gills, hooking Harry Davis’ header away at the far post.

The Gills were under pressure and it needed a great save from Flitney to keep out Danny Shelley’s powerful shot. He held the effort well.

Five minutes of added time were played and Flitney was called on again with a great save, tipping wide Byron Moore’s low shot. The final whistle couldn’t come quick enough for the Gills.

Crewe: Phillips, Davis, Westwood, Artell, Dugdale, Bell, Murphy (Leitch-Smith 68mins), Miller, Moore, Martin, Powell (Shelley 64mins). Subs not used: Martin, Clayton (Miller 86mins), Hughes.

Gillingham: Flitney, Fuller, Martin, Frampton, Lawrence, Lee, J Payne (S Payne 84mins), Montrose, Spiller (Fish 86mins), Whelpdale (Weston 34mins), Kedwell. Subs not used: Richards, Gazzaniga.

Attendance: 3,401

Ok hands up we have three points more than I thought we`d have after two games but let`s not get too carried away. We can`t assume the midfielders are going to be consistent scorers so until we acquire a striker who actually strikes we will be susceptible to losing tight one goal games. Also, the midfielders must surely realise they have to get closer to Kedwell when we are in possession. I thought the lesson would have been learned on the opening weekend but no. And finally to Dave; you are correct in your observation that a degree of panic crept in when Crewe scored but this is a common trait with all clubs (great and small) when the initiative is surrendered. It`s unlike me to be overly positive, but come Saturday night and with a possible ten points banked I might just have to reasses my long held view that the management team were on borrowed time.

The only view I expressed was my dislike of Ron, Dave and a few others total negativity on what has being an ok start to the season, what’s wrong with that?

Being abusive to me from security and anonymity of the internet is pointless an ineffective, so brace yourself for even more of my “sanctimonious” views in the future.

Go on then, call me some names. I’m not going trade insults with you because I don’t know you and I don’t care.

@Borat, fair point mate, they probably are on the wind up, maybe I should just ignore them?

great start but those games are in the past now. Still early days boys. Most important game is Barnet. Won't be easy.

    Just a few things though.

    1) Dave do you really think that it is realistic to expect the other team not to have periods in the game where they will be on top? I see Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have all dropped points so far this season, and United are being held by West Brom.

    2) Cheltenham, yeah those relegation certainties that we only just beat Dave, beat fancied Swindon yesterday. Shock!

    3) can you please stop the personal insults, whether it be aimed at the manager, the chairman or other posters. There's no need and just detracts from anything you do have to say that might have some relevance.

    4) looks like a repeat performance but reduction in cards. Only 3 yellows wouldn't you believe but still lots of effort, determination, and many good things.

    5) there are still things to be worked on. But we are heading in the right direction. We look difficult to break down and when we get forward we need the midfield to keep getting up there to support Kedwell.

    6) I'm pleased to see us defending from the front. Putting opposing teams under pressure high up the pitch. Whelpdale's goal was a perfect example of what can happen when we do this.

Keep up the good work lads. One very happy Gills fan here. There's still a long way to go but win lose or draw I'm going to enjoy the journey.

@ Pete. What makes Rubenstein's comments (and most others on here) better than yours, Pete and Ron's is that his is constructive rather than abusive. You and the other two Chuckle Brothers would have more credability if you also posted some positivity, such as the quality of some of the signings. But no you don't thus you are obviously wind up merchant (banker)s.

Pete there is no justification for daves rant, he's clearly on the wind up. the trick is not to let the opposition score coz if they do they get hope and apply pressure. we do it to teams if we're losing at home. this is what hess said and he's right. when they did get their tails up, we came through the test, they didn't score, we came home with 3 points. we've conceded one goal from open play in 3 games, including a championship side who have won both their league matches. there is no justification for daves rant. that's my opinion, hope that's valid for you matey boy. now why don't you, dave and ron go and get your kicks by getting a life you bunch of sads.

Fair play to you returning the these threads to give us you’re usual scathing opinions of Hessy, your mate Ron has yet to put in an appearance as yet but then he did categorically state that we would loose to Crewe, I did do a posting on his behalf (and yours) a bit further down from this one as people were posting their positive feed back and getting all optimistic about the team and we can’t have that can we?!

In spite of your dire warning on the forthcoming Barnet match, telling us to mark your words (all in upper case to really emphasise the seriousness of your tone, nice touch that) I’ll pass on that one thanks very much. Your take on the manager is distorted and you’re unable to take a balance view unlike the rest of us proper fans.

So the Manager says there are lessons to be learn't. Dam right, perhaps he can explain why when the opposition have scored in the last 2 matches, Gills have immediatly become stricken with panic and looked desperate. This is when they play like headless chickens, when instead they should stay composed. It is the managers job to realise this and do something about it during games, however this manager fails to notice such things and so the opposition pile forward incessantly. What is the point of him standing on the touchline, if he can't see that all it takes for his side to lose there discipline is for the opposition to score.

Lazy numbskull Hessenthaler produce an absolute shocker of a display, having spent the last few days sunning himself and playing golf whilst ignoring phone calls from quality strikers clamouring to get signed up, the clueless manager idiot put the same formation that scraped a win against relegation favourites Cheltenham. Kedwell again struggled up front and the five man midfield ran around like headless chickens although two of them did score, complete fluke that. To cap it all brainless Hessenthaler put on complete non-footballer Stefan Payne in a desperate bid to lose the game and only Crewes (new relegation favourites) failure to capitalise on the evil Imps blunder saved Hessy bacon, mark my words Gills will finish 2 places lower than normally possible in 26th!! Bah humbug I hate everything, moan moan, bewail!!
