Andy Hessenthaler pleased with Gills away win at Crewe

Manager Andy Hessenthaler was a happy man after seeing his side pick up another league win, but admitted there were lessons to learn.

His team were cruising to the three points with 75 minutes gone, holding onto a 2-0 lead, but a Crewe goal changed the game and left the Gills hanging on at the end to keep the three points.

“Last year I think we would have ended up dropping points but it just shows how hard we are working as a team,” said the Gills boss.

“We needed to make sure we didn’t concede. We had good spells and they had good spells in the game and in the second half when our fans start singing “ole” I don’t think that helped.

“There was a little bit of complacency setting in and it looked a bit too easy.”

Once Crewe scored the Gills needed three goalline clearances and two impressive saves from keeper Ross Flitney to hold onto the points.

“It’s amazing what a goal does,” Hessenthaler said. “All of a sudden it changes the complexion of the game.

“They got the goal, which we shouldn’t have conceded. In the end we were hanging on a little bit. I am pleased. Crewe are a good team and they aren’t easy to play against. We’ve got a result but there are lessons to be learned and positives to take.”

@.Hindenberg abuse eh? Obviously not intelligent to put forward a coherent argument. Or do you get off on posting abuse? Oh and if you are named after the German Airship it is spelt HINDENBURG! Pompous enough for you?

Pedro, I will take your points in turn. You say we played better football under Stimson? Based upon what exactly? That is a subjective comment. Given the lack of an away win under Stimson and the good form under Hess on his travels, I would suggest away we play better football under Hess. But Stimson's home record two years ago was good but we were relegated, so again how do you define it? I did not enjoy the quality (or lack of it at Wycombe on the last day).

Your second point about Hess not giving youth a chance is inaccurate though. Although Jack Payne was given a chance by Stimson, it was under Hess that he was given the chance to become an established player, starting 27 games last term, almost double than under Stimson. Callum Davies made his bow under Hess along with 16 year old Ashley Miller. Dean Rance, Connor Essam, Jack Evans, Alex Brown, Tom Brunt and Darren Hawkes have all been given pro contracts and promoted to the 1st team squad. Lets not forget Stefan Payne and Paulo Gazzaniga who Hess has brought in and they are both young players.

Say what you like about Stimson but we played better football under him than we do now and thats a fact. Also he was willing to give youth a chance unlike this urchin.

Well another 3 points and goals coming from midfield again. First away win of season and hopefully first of many.

Does anyone know how bad Whelps injury was or did Hess take him off as a precaution?

    Up the Gills!
