Barnet 2 Gillingham 2

Jack Payne

Gillingham were denied a third successive victory in League 2 after conceding an injury time goal at Barnet on Tuesday.

The Gills took a first half lead through Danny Spiller but Barnet levelled the scores just after the hour mark through Izale McLeod.

Payne restored Gills’ lead with a wonder strike from 30 yards but the game finished all-square when McLeod popped up again in the final minute of stoppage time.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler had made just one change to his starting XI, and the only change he has made since the season opener. In came Curtis Weston for Chris Whelpdale, who was out with a dead leg.

Weston was first to test the hands of Barnet keeper Dean Brill with a low shot that was held by the keeper.

The seventh-minute opener arrived on a plate for the Gills when Charlie Lee’s long throw dropped in the box and Spiller, who scored in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Crewe, had a simple tap-in from close range.

Danny Kedwell, still searching his first goal of the season, came close with a glancing header that was deflected just wide. From the resulting corner Lewis Montrose had a chance that hit keeper Brill.

The home keeper knew little of the save and at the other end Ross Flitney somehow got a block on Matt Lawrence’s clearance that was heading into his own net. Flitney made a number of routine saves towards the end of the half as Barnet put some pressure on.

Weston smashed an early second half chance over the bar for the Gills and the same player poked an effort wide moments later from Kedwell’s knock down.

With 61 minutes gone Barnet levelled the scores when McLeod headed home unmarked from just a few yards out.

Three minutes later Jason Price smashed a low effort against the post and on 68 minutes Barnet had the ball in the net through Mark Byrne, but the referee had already blown for a foul. The subsequent free-kick sailed safely over the bar.

Gills survived the onslaught and with 73 minutes gone they retook the lead with a long-range effort from Payne, to thrill the 1,052 away supporters that had made the journey.

That goal took some steam out of the home side but they pressed again in injury time and with four extra minutes on the clock a deep free-kick into the box found McLeod and he slammed the ball home.

Barnet: Brill, Senda, Parkes, Uddin, Hughes (Fraser 46mins), Byrne, Deering (Holmes 82mins), Kamdjo, Marshall, McLeod, Price (Taylor 80mins). Subs not used: Geohaghon, O’Brien.

Gills: Flitney, Fuller, Martin, Lawrence, Frampton, Lee, J Payne (Jackman 74mins), Spiller (Oli 66mins), Montrose, Weston (Fish 80mins), Kedwell. Subs not used: Richards, Gazzaniga.

Attendance: 2,466.

It`s Ron`s cheap shot at a 18-year-old keeper. I`ve read comments articles stating that a number of Gills players rate the said 18-year-old as the best keeper at the club. I can confirm that I recently heard exactly the same from a source I`d personally consider to be highly reliable. Of course without a goalkeeping coach to advise the management, what do they know apart from the fact the both incumbents kick the ball miles and miles ...

Bit baffled this end. Can`t make my mind up on whether we are better than I think or flattering to deceive. Still believe teams who play with both pace and width have the potential to cause us problems. The defence did look seriously ponderous against the clever movement of the Barnet strikers. Also not sure about Jack Payne. For me he continues to give away possession very cheaply and his passing is so predictable and slow that the opposition simply drop deep to defend thus further limiting his options. Dennis Oli`s contribution is not worth the mention. However, his total lack of the same most surely is. How many more chances can he possibly get before being offloaded! An aside: did anyone else notice Gazzaniga`s complete inability/reluctance to hold any shot fired in during the warm up. This trait, an unfortunate one for a goalkeeper I`d say, was evident before the season opener. The boy is more of a circus act than a goalkeeper! But hey ho, he`s big, he`s foreign, he can kick aimlessly for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles so he must be good! Heaven help us if Flitney gets injured.

My first match of the season as I have been working away since the start. I don't normally comment on others postings but some of the ones on here are stupid in the extreme. "Drop Lawrence", "Bottom Half by October and Hess gone a month later". What planet are these 'fans' from ? Lawrence put in a really good performance last night and along with Spiller epitomised what this side have going for them this season. There is a togetherness that was seriously lacking last season and it is only the third match of our current campaign. 7 out of 9 and undefeated, I'm sure we'd have all taken that if asked at the start. Yes Barcham would have been nice but he wanted away so off he went, the current squad look lively and seem to be willing to play for their place rather than expect to be picked (see Mark Bentley). Yes I was gutted that we let that goal in, yes we should have taken our chances better and been a couple of goals up before they had the chance to equalise but it's early days and the side are doing well, third place with 4 points already taken away from home. Hess will deliver this time around as it's his team now and he will get it sorted as time passes. A word with Oli about calming down and not getting over excited when the ball comes to him would do the world of good and something serious needs to be said to Curtis. He could have wrapped up the game last night on at least two occasions and the sooner he regains the form we know he's capable of the better our side will be. UTG !

    Great goal by Payne
Barnet have two good forwards in Marshall and McLeod and we struggled against both of them.
Still it's a good start. Four point from two away games is better than last season.

Yes disappointing performance, not as fluid as previously and losing the lead twice is frustrating, particularly the 90th min goal. What was evident last night was the lack of pace in the final 3rd, someone who can stretch the play. If we had that option we would have run the clock down and broken with purpose rather than the ball constantly coming back. I am not an Oli fan, but please, blaming him for the goal was pathetic. Yes he gave away a free kick by there was a lot of football between that and the goal. McLeod was given too much space and when you do that he will score. The lack of pace at the back is a point, but given the experience and ability of Lawrence and Frampton, we should be able to cope and lets face it Martin and indeed Fuller are no slouches. Lets not go over the top here, yes disappointing result, in manner and performance but 7 out of 9, every Gills fab (apart from the Chuckle Brothers obviously) would have taken that before the start. A new striker in by the weekend and we will be in good shape. Oh and Ron, are you going to refer to every team as relegation favourites? You said the same about Cheltenham and now Barnet. I expect you will trot the same out about Plymouth, Hereford, Morecombe, Accrington etc etc etc.

    @Eric Cartman & Ron

Your legs must be knackered from repeatedly jumping on the bandwagon.

When it comes to the performance/result, yeah it was gutting to lose a goal in the dying seconds. But it happens to a lot of teams and will happen it again. It was a couple of lapses in concentration that cost us. But we are unbeaten in the league thus far, against a position that so many, "Ron" included, said we would struggle to be in. I believe by the WUM's predictions we should now be bottom of the league with Hessy fighting for his job.

I don't know why this gets to me, you're obviously narrow-minded people who have nothing but negative things to say about the "club you support" and you're obviously just picking on these things to get a reaction. So sad but hey, it works.

Payne was substituted because he was playing average at best (too many un-aimed hoof balls forward and was starting to get exposed by Barnet's pace). The fact that he scored a wonder goal doesn't change that fact. Spiller was subbed because he'd worked extremely hard and was utterly exhausted. Oli played well for the 24 minutes he was on, had some nice touches and looked like he was starting to link up with Kedwell somewhat. It was a sloppy freekick that probably shouldn't have been given that cost us... poor refing, and you can't blame Oli for that.

Dreadful performance overall, relegation favourites Barnet out played us (58% possession) and we were lucky in the end to get a point. No idea why Hessy took off Jack Payne after a wonder goal and taking off Spiller who was covering well with Fuller to cope with the dangerous Marshall was a school boy error. Well enough has been said about Oli on here, Eric is correct, what a clown!

We have a new Coco the Clown in Dennis Oli! How useless was he when he came on.... His touch is dreadful and he is so clumsy hardly a suprise when he gave away the silly free kick away in the 93 minute! Does make you wonder how much damage Stimson did at the club, sign Oli as the "best non league player" and booted out Andrew Crofts "who was not good enough for league two!" who is now captain of a premier league side! Overall the Gills look good i thought, solid at the back and the first goal conceded looked two yards offside. Could of and should of killed the game off which is why we need to sigh a goal scorer ASAP, Danny Kedwell did well holding the ball up and bringing other players into the game however he is not going to score more than 10 goals all season in open play! I'm sorry but some of you lot need to get real. Another solid performance for me and a decent point. Yeah sure gutting to not win but most would take 7 from 9 considering 2 of these games have been away. Martin has played as well as anyone this season and the defence does lack pace but seem very solid, the amount of pressure endured tonight giving only three real chances away which two of them were goals. If Weston would've had his shooting boots on tonight the three points were ours. An extra forward for the home games especially and we can really move forward UTG.

Oli did ok and had some nice touches. You've not mentioned the lousy defending of the free-kick (which I'm not convinced should've been given anyway) but let's not let that get in the way of scapegoating one player eh.

I agree though, we're unbeaten and after their first goal we let Barnet right back into it. Payne's goal was totally against the run of play and the performance once they'd scored didn't warrant victory. However we should've been out of sight by then. It will hopefully be a warning against complacency and a lesson in seeing out games. Onwards and hopefully upwards!

Frampton and Lawrence may lack a bit of pace, but they can defend. Over the whole season I'm sure they will win us a lot of points.

Despite the injury to Birchall which has forced us to change game our team shape, we have had a fantastic start.

Lets hope we can bring in that extra forward this week, and really start our season on Saturday.

With all the new players, and the loss of Birchall I expected a slow start, so 7 points out of 9 is a very good start.

Would have been a great win if not for Oli's needless foul on the half way line that gave them the free kick that led to the goal. our problems and down to the manager and no one else for setting the team up wrong - i agree with johnny below - in everything you need a healthy balance, life, work, etc - AND a football team

so far i think flitney looks dodgy, fish well ou tof his league and we should be using an age concern bus to get our defence to and from the match given their lack of pace. either drop lawrence or drop martin and play frampton at left back - a pacy defender is needed quickly, along with a striker who can actually hit the back of the net

i never have been able to have a 'settle for a point' mentality - to me that is defeatist, we should want to win every game and never settle for anything less

so to come away and take the lead twice, and then lose it, was extremely disappointing.

despite the influx of new players, i have yet to see an improvement on the inconsistant, dreadful football that hessenthaler's team put on show last season.

truthfully, we were very fortunate to get the win against cheltenham, and went ahead against the run of play at crewe and somehow came away with the win. in both games we simply fell apart at the end, and let them come at us. the only possible explanation is that this is exactly what the team has been told to do by our tactical genius of a manager, sit back and defend.

i would love to be able to come on here and be totally positive, but the truth is we are far from being a good side.

we have a frightening lack of pace at the back and were caught out against brighton, crewe and exposed countless times tonight. we have an array of midfielders but too many similar players playing out of position just so the manager can accomodate them all. we then have very little firepower up front, and a goalkeeper who was exposed during the peterboorugh game and again tonight.

we have too many central midfeilders and not the right balance - with lee and whelpdale there really is no room for spiller, especially with montrose in the side.

we should have gone out of our way to keep barcham - fit and in form as he now is scunthorpe are reaping the rewards, although with hess's inability to play football, this could go some way to explaining his lack of form and confidencelast season.

so far we have come up against poor sides, pretty soon we will be ripped apart and exposed for what we are.

    a poor footballing side.

look forward to hearing mr cliche himself, hess, explaining why we cannot hold onto a lead. 'they are a good side with pace, we were away from home, the boys were tired, i couldn't ask anymore of the boys, words were said at half time' etc etc
remember when sir alf ramsey won the world cup, he called up jack charlton, who himself went to sir alf and said there were far better players than him to choose from. sir alf said he was right - but that they will not fit into his team.

hess has signed some good players yes, but has the balance of the team way, way out.

lawrence and frampton are both too slow to play together - simon king not even on the bench - is there something going on there? if he is not fit, then surely he has got to be given a chance?

the hess old boys club is well adn truly back

sorry, but we will be bottom half by october and hess gone a month later.
