Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler thought it was a wasted two points at Barnet after conceding late on

Andy Hessenthaler admitted he felt devastated after his side conceded victory in the fourth minute of injury time at Barnet on Tuesday night.

The Gillingham manager saw his side twice take the lead but on both occasions the hosts hit back to claim a share of the spoils.

Barnet’s late equaliser, to make it 2-2, came after referee James Linington penalised Dennis Oli for a foul. The resulting free-kick ended up at the feet of Izale McLeod, who converted from close range.

“I’m devastated and we all are,” said Hessenthaler. “I don’t think it was a foul but saying that we still have to defend from the free-kick.

“It was a soft one but we had to defend it like we defended it for most of the evening. Right at the death, we didn’t. We switched off and they punished us.

“We looked like we were going to see the game out but the ball was headed across the box and he (McLeod) has got a free shot on goal. We are bitterly disappointed but we have to learn from it.”

The Gills looked to be heading for a third straight win thanks to Jack Payne’s 30-yard effort midway through the second half which made it 2-1.

“Jack scored a goal that was worthy of winning the games for us,” said Hessenthaler. “It’s not an easy place to go to but we know we have thrown two points away.

“We are gutted but we are unbeaten in three, with seven points from nine, and I would have taken that at the beginning of the season.”

I said Oli did okay, not well - two different things.
The fact was that when he usually comes on we either laugh or cry (or both) @ his efforts but there was none of that on Tue.
Believe me nothing would make me happier than if Oli were to leave but I am not going to slate him for the sake of it (only when appropriate which is most games but not Tue).

Nige, Oli did well when he came on! what game were you watching! What did he actual do that was productive for the team?? Cut the Oranges at Half time? He nearly fell over when he had the ball near his feet (its always two yards away too), he cant head the ball let alone tackle, oh yes but he has got pace, i guess that something in his locker.

Thought we performed okay again last nite and as @ Brighton no-one particularly shone out but neither did anyone play poorly either. Just a good all round team effort. Even Oli did okay when he came on (amazingly!).
Yes we still need a partner for Kedwell and yes we did our usual stop concentrating at the death routine which did cost us yet again and does need to be sorted. Made it feel like a defeat but in all fairness a draw was about right on the night overall.
So far this season positives definitely outweigh negatives and although certain improvements needed is good start.
Roll on Plymouth and another win.

    Good news!

As long as Ron is the keeper and Dave is the striker we so desperately crave, we will be fine.

Otherwise we are dead certs for a bottom half finish. Apparently.

I reckon you must all be on permanent blob or are henpecked husbands.

All good sides have one thing in commen besides good players.A manager that works 24/7 non stop almost obsessively in order to iron out problems. Andy Scott is the type i'm talking about , he is not afraid to act if players aren't good enough, he simply acts on it.This manager is not in that catergory. He hopes things will improve rather than acts.

Dave - I dunno if you have noticed over the years, but Gills have a habit of conceding late goals, i dont think you can put this down to Hessenthaler. Every team that are 1 down with litterally minutes to go will come at you believing they can grab an equaliser/winner, especially being the home team. And you can guarentee that it will happen again to the Gills this year, and we will probably do it to other teams aswell so stop your moaning and get behind the boys. We are unbeaten in our 1st 3 games taking 7 points from 9, when people like you predicted we would get nothing at Crewe or Barnet, just goes to show you no absolutely nothing and how little faith you have in the team, so do yourself a favour and run along

Dennis Oli you are a complete and utter useless waste of space.Uncomposed,clumsy,non-prolific why are we still persevering with him.Look at the strikers at clubs like, Rotherham, Port vale, crawley, and then compare them with this donkey and you will see why we will not be a top3 side this season.

Well, well, well, it happened yet again. How many more 94th minute goals are they going to concede before Hessenthaler corrects it. Did they not do the same against Posh, millwall and orient. This dimwit manager claims he learns lessons, well he clearly didn't learn that lesson, nor did he learn how to deal with the lad mcleod after he destroyed us last seaon. This side clearly doesn't know how to see out games, and as for Kedwell the man won't score 10gls this season let alone 20, although his effort is commendable.

a pacey centre back wouldn't go a miss either!

unless he had an injury i felt we should of kept weston on, rather than fish right mid or put fuller infront of fish.
whelpdale would of made a difference for us if fit.

7 out of 9 is a good ask though...onwards and upwards!!!

They have the 2 players we are missing, a pacey left winger and a quality striker.

also the fact of no pace at the back is a worry and not being able to mark a teams danger man till the end!
