Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler disappointed with second half display in Gills' 3-0 defeat at Rotherham

Andy Hessenthalerby Luke Cawdell

Gillingham’s second half performance wasn’t up to scratch, conceded boss Andy Hessenthaler after losing 3-0 at Rotherham on Saturday.

The Gills went from being competitive in the first half to capitulating in the second.

“I can’t believe the result but we deserved to lose on the second half performance,” said Hessenthaler (pictured).

“First half we looked comfortable without creating a lot of chances. The keeper made a save from Kedwell when he got in, but our final ball probably let us down a bit.”

Rotherham’s opener originated from a disputed throw and when that went in the game rapidly went downhill for the Gills. An unwell Jack Payne was substituted and that gave the hosts the room to engineer two more goals.

“Goals change games and so do decisions,” the Gills boss said. “It was clearly our throw and I could see from the other side that Frampton slid in and it came off their fella for our throw. How the linesman can give it to them I don’t know and I can’t work it out.

“But saying that, we can’t rely on the officials, we should defend it better. We didn’t perform from there on.

“We looked a poor side after conceding and we ran out of ideas. It gave them the confidence and the impetus and we ended up losing the game.

"We are disappointed but we can’t be too critical. We are going to lose games, but the way we lost it in the second half was the biggest thing,”

After conceding the first goal Hessenthaler felt it best to take off Payne and bring on Dennis Oli to give them more going forward. It was a move he accepts didn’t work.

Hessenthaler said: “He (Payne) was doing well but he did come in at half-time and he was quite poorly, he felt sick and we had to keep an eye on him.

“Once we went a goal down you are chasing the game and we went for another striker. That affected us the other way because Jack sits in there and breaks things up and we ended up conceding again. You live and learn.

“We gave Kedwell a partner with Dennis and we actually got worse.”

Thank heavens we don't play teams like Cheltenham each week Ron, they are 6th place, having stuffed 'promotion certainties' Crawley, who have a bigger budget than most League one teams.

HAHA,none of you are clearly gills fans.Just because we lost 3-0 doesn't mean we're going to get relegated. I remember us losing to Shrewsbury 7-0 and guess what, we got promoted. + Ron have you ever been to see Gillingham?

Well what did I tell you all then hey? Gillingham would get found out v Rotherham United & Shrewsbury Town. So we’ve had one of those matches & already it’s ended in a 3-0 thrashing by Rotherham United. Hessenthaler’s appalling “team” were NEVER IN THE MATCH. All of this without even goal machine Adam Lefondre playing, if he’d of been playing it would be 5. This was the match to prove that we’re promotion material, & as I’ve said so many times previous we aren’t & this match showed so. So our supporters who dream & believe in promotion can now shut up at long last. We just can’t play small, bust & part time teams like Barnet, Cheltenham Town, Crewe Alexandra & Plymouth Argyle every match. We can’t compete against the top teams in this league, so we can’t win any promotion. We’ll have to struggle it out against the bottom teams in order to avoid an impending relegation out of the Football League. Our supporters should just be happy to be within the Football League; they should shut up about promotion. We do not have the right manager, we don’t have the right players, we don’t have the right squad, the right staff or the finances for promotion as you know.

Our promotion chances were ALL blown last season when Hessenthaler wasted the decent budget (double of this seasons) on poor players. Hessenthaler’s failure last season will cost us dearly again this season & next. We didn’t even make the Play Off’s last season & that was with the biggest budget in that league. Hessenthaler is a manager that should’ve gone last season; he should’ve been out in October 2010. Hessenthaler should NEVER be here this season. This side will struggle BIG time against the top teams & once again get several hidings. Hessenthaler’s idea’s are not even better than Mark Stimson’s, it’s sad to believe, but it’s the truth. Mark Stimson DID bring the club back up to League One after just one season in League Two & Hessenthaler is a manager that didn’t. When people don’t achieve what they’ve been set out to do they get the sack & Hessenthaler you should’ve been long given the sack by now. Just look at our forward line in the team, it’s non-existent. People should take off their VERY dark coloured tinted glasses now & get a clearer view; it takes managerial experience/experties, money & decent strikers to get promotion. We DON’T have any of this. We will finish 16th at best this season & you better believe it. We are no where good enough for promotion, not even good enough to finish the disgusting 8th place that we got last season when we had double the budget. We’d all love to be in that top 3 at the end of the season, but you’re having a laugh if you believe that we will be. People like Danny Kedwell should also shut up regards to promotion comments, we haven’t got a chance. Players & supporters should be happy with 16th place this season.

It’s now time for our supporters to grow up & see the truth that we aren’t good enough. We’ll be taken apart by the top teams in this league because we can’t compete with them. It’s a very sad case, but it’s the truth. Teams such as Bristol Rovers, Crawley Town, Northampton Town, Rotherham United, Shrewsbury Town & Southend United will take us apart this season. Until we have a decent manager, decent funds (not wasted) & League Two players we’ll continue to go no where. Now we need to prepare for Shrewsbury Town next Weekend because the passing that they have in them will give our players the run around. We’ve had it easy with matches v teams like Barnet & Cheltenham Town at the start of the season, but when the BIG boys come up we get STUFFED! We have been found out already in our first match against one of the BIG promotion candidates & this proves that we aren’t up to promotion. So shut up & be happy with 16th place this season because that’s all we’re fit for with a Non League manager, Non League players & wasted finances by a manager who should'nt be here now. Hessenthaler is a manager that no other Football League club would take; he IS a Non League manager.

Bad managers that do not get results get the sack, Hessenthaler is no different & should be gone.

    - Congratulations to Rotherham United, you ARE a top 3 team & WILL get promoted this season.

without wishing to be seeing as negative, this result has been coming. we are not as good as our first few results suggest.

at home against cheltenham we were outplayed, and nicked and very marginal and undeserved win. at barnet we were again outplayed for most of the match. away at crewe we survived by the skin of our teeth, and are still incabably of killing an opponent off.

last week against plymouth we were again outplayed for most of the match until the first penalty saw them drop their heads. and again today, our first half performance was all huff without actually playing much football and with no end result. rotherham sat back, kept their patience, and in the second half murdered us.

the first goal was down to the keeper - that should have been flitney's ball - still not convinced by him, better than julian in some ways, worse in others. not in the class of roycce, brown, banks etc

the second goal was disgraceful - oli had only just come on, with 30 mins to play, and with fresh legs should have closed down their player who put the deciding cross in - instead he stood there pointing to it - appalling and totally unacceptable - i expect any player who comes on with fresh legs to run down and chase every ball and close the opposition down at every opportunity - he either couldn't be bothered or his footballing brain didn't realise this is what he needed to do - either way, he is a total liability.

the third goal was an excellent finish after some neat touches - something we are incabable of.

in terms of the football, little has changed since last season, with us devoid of any inspiration or ideas - last season Hess was able to use every excuse in the book - the team need time to gel, the lads are down after relegation, they had some good players and this is a hard place to come, these aren't his players etc etc

the buck stops with the manager - last year he couldn't get our better players to perfrom to the best of their abilities, and even now early on this season, the same thing is beginning to happen.

i predicted a 3-0 win for rotherham, and this week i can see shrewsbury turning us over 2-0 at home.

still think we will be bottom hald by end of october, with Hess gone. then we can sign a proper manager.

hess just has not got what it takes, and, excuses aside, he failed dismally last season but has been given the benefit of the doubt, and, so far this season, it isn't looking any better performace and ability wise.

Looks like we were brought back to earth by rotherham but there's nothing to worry about yet its too early. Oli needs to go out on loan to gain confidence as a striker at the moment he is always brought on as an impact player but he isn't going to deliver. Time is running out to get another striker in looks like we need it!
