Rotherham United 3 Gillingham 0

Danny Kedwell attempts to beat Rotherham keeper Conrad Logan.

by Luke Cawdell

Gillingham crashed to their first league defeat of the season after conceding three second half goals at Rotherham.

Danny Harrison headed the hosts ahead early in the second half and just after the hour Lewis Grabban doubled their advantage.

Gareth Evans slotted home from close range for Rotherham’s third to all-but finish the Gills off.

Danny Kedwell had been working hard for the Gills in attack, with Danny Spiller offering support, and he came close on a couple of occasions in a first half of few chances.

With 38 minutes gone Kedwell (pictured) was clean through on goal but keeper Conrad Logan saved well. A shot by the Gillingham striker moment later whizzed wide of the post.

The best chance of the half belonged to Rotherham when from a Gillingham free-kick they broke and Gareth Evans curled an effort in from 15 yards, only to see goalkeeper Ross Flitney tip the ball wide with a diving save.

Those chances came late in a first half that had otherwise been devoid of goalscoring chances.

With 53 minutes on the clock the home side took the lead when Danny Schofield’s cross was headed in by Harrison.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler tried to change things for his side on the hour with the introduction of Dennis Oli for Jack Payne. The visitors almost found themselves 2-0 down seconds later when Mark Bradley smashed a long-range effort narrowly off target.

Rotherham did get a second on 63 minutes when Grabban latched onto a through-ball and slid a shot past Flitney to leave the Gills with a huge task to rescue the match.

Kedwell had a looping header turned onto the post by keeper Conrad Logan and he was needed to tip sub Luke Rooney’s effort over moments later as the Gills responded by pressing the Rotherham goal.

It left gaps at the back for the Gills and Flitney did well to deny Grabban but seconds later, with 76 minutes gone, the defence was left exposed again as Evans slotted the ball home from a Marcus Marshall cross.

Rotherham: Logan, Marshall, Newey, Harrison, Raynes, Cresswell, Schofield, Evans, Taylor (Bradley 52mins), Holroyd (Foster 86mins), Grabban. Subs not used: Warrington, Brown, Pringle.

Gillingham: Flitney, Fuller, Martin (Jackman 76mins), Frampton, Lawrence, J Payne (Oli 60mins), Spiller (Rooney 68mins), Montrose, Weston, Lee, Kedwell. Subs not used: Richards, Gazzaniga.

Attendance: 3,740

@ Harold Monk, Totally understand where your coming from regarding those people that post comments, I just wonder to myself have they have ever played football at a high standard.(probably no higher than sunday league, or there school team back in the day) They talk about how bad the players are but I bet if you was to put them in the same situtation they would be a million times worse.

As for Julian he played the first 2 league games and the Carling Cup fixture, but Chris Day has since regained the number one spot and played the last 3 League games

Just to clear up your point made about Alan Julian in fact isnt the number 1 at Stevenage, a chap called Chris Day happens to be, but still kudos to Alan for finding another League club all be it as back up keeper to Chris Day.

Also just because someone says something that you dont like reading/hearing or dont agree with that doesnt make them any less of a "Supporter" than you, everyone is intitled to their opinion after all. As the gills are a small club (yes we are a small club as our fan base is small, home attendances prove my point, but its huge when we have trips to wembley or when we have trips to wembley or one of the Big Boys are drawn in the cup) we need all the support we can get even if they post negative things which I myself admit can't stand but its their opinion!!!

We've lost 1 game so far this season, there are still 41 games, 123 points at stake still, and as much as I'd love Gill's to get all 123 points and 41 wins, its not going to happen FACT, so with there being 41 games to go an somehow I think (know infact as im not deluded) there'll be afew more defeats to come!!

Regardless of some peoples dislike of Hessenthaler being in charge who else really is going to come down to Kent and take over from him and work on a shoestring budget each season that Scally sets?? Not many managers that's for sure!

So for the rest of the season as "Supporters" of Gillingham FC lets get behind the team, WIN, LOSE or DRAW!!! UTG

Excellent Ron is back! Was starting to worry he had disappeared for good! And his contribution to the debate? For all his words "I told you so!". Pathetic and childish contribution. At least the others (bar fellow chuckle brother Dave) questioning Hess are relatively constructive. And stop referring to the Gills as "we" or "ours" as you have no right to say you are supporters.

We lost one game against a good side. Yes we need a striker, Hess knows that and as someone with sense posted, judge him after the window closes. No one knows what Hess is doing (despite mystic dave) or who he is target is, but he will like with all the other signings they will be the right signings. Amazing how the chuckle brothers criticise Hess for everything but are not big or intelligent enough to acknowledge the quality we have signed in Lee, Welps and Frampton. As for slating Flitney, those same people slated Julian who is no 1 in a League 1 side, so I take your opinions on keepers with a pinch of salt.

Yes we lost, but it was one game and we have had a good start without playing well. Yes we need a striker but please get some perspective and in Ron and Dave's case a life and comment on whatever team it is you follow, Dover I assume given your irrational hatred of Hess.

Judge the team after 10 games, then we will see if we have the striker we need and possibly a left sided midfielder.

And Ron, given your joy at our defeat and the almost erotic thrill you seem to have attained, perhaps defeat is a small price to pay toake you and Dave happy! Up the Gills!

agree with pedro - too slow at the back, the full backs are generally clueless, the midfield has no shape and no width, and generally bump into each other and for all his efforts, kedwell isn't good enough for league 2 - no goals from open play in five matches is unacceptable from a number 9 - he managed it for afc wimbledon in this formation BUT in the division below, where you get a bit more time on the ball.

flitney is also very very poor - whereas rotherham's keeper was a class above which you could tell every time the ball went near their box - we are a long way from being a good side yet. again, the wage and transfer budget wasted on an excess of midfielders when you still haven't shipped out spiller or jackman, instead of buying a decent goalkeeper and winger and forward - if we do go up, it will be because the league is so poor, not because brain of britain hessenthaler got hsi tactics and team right.

I`ve already said what`s wrong with the midfield.
Upfront Kedweel is out of his depth. He tries hard but he`s got nothing to offer.
In his defence the midfield don`t support him we lose possession and the ball comes back at us time and again.
What is the point of Flitney`s long kicks which always becme the oppositions ball. I`ve heard he got signed because he`s got a big boot. If thats the case its shocking.
Hessenthaler has no idea how to set up a team when we go behind. Long ball, long ball and more long ball. If we had 3 up front it might work, might.
Sadly first decent team we meet highlights the weaknesses.
Sill think we`ll go up without the playoff though.

Well what did I tell you all then hey? Gillingham would get found out v Rotherham United & Shrewsbury Town. So we’ve had one of those matches & already it’s ended in a 3-0 thrashing by Rotherham United. Hessenthaler’s appalling “team” were NEVER IN THE MATCH. All of this without even goal machine Adam Lefondre playing, if he’d of been playing it would be 5. This was the match to prove that we’re promotion material, & as I’ve said so many times previous we aren’t & this match showed so. So our supporters who dream & believe in promotion can now shut up at long last. We just can’t play small, bust & part time teams like Barnet, Cheltenham Town, Crewe Alexandra & Plymouth Argyle every match. We can’t compete against the top teams in this league, so we can’t win any promotion. We’ll have to struggle it out against the bottom teams in order to avoid an impending relegation out of the Football League. Our supporters should just be happy to be within the Football League; they should shut up about promotion. We do not have the right manager, we don’t have the right players, we don’t have the right squad, the right staff or the finances for promotion as you know.

Our promotion chances were ALL blown last season when Hessenthaler wasted the decent budget (double of this seasons) on poor players. Hessenthaler’s failure last season will cost us dearly again this season & next. We didn’t even make the Play Off’s last season & that was with the biggest budget in that league. Hessenthaler is a manager that should’ve gone last season; he should’ve been out in October 2010. Hessenthaler should NEVER be here this season. This side will struggle BIG time against the top teams & once again get several hidings. Hessenthaler’s idea’s are not even better than Mark Stimson’s, it’s sad to believe, but it’s the truth. Mark Stimson DID bring the club back up to League One after just one season in League Two & Hessenthaler is a manager that didn’t. When people don’t achieve what they’ve been set out to do they get the sack & Hessenthaler you should’ve been long given the sack by now. Just look at our forward line in the team, it’s non-existent. People should take off their VERY dark coloured tinted glasses now & get a clearer view; it takes managerial experience/experties, money & decent strikers to get promotion. We DON’T have any of this. We will finish 16th at best this season & you better believe it. We are no where good enough for promotion, not even good enough to finish the disgusting 8th place that we got last season when we had double the budget. We’d all love to be in that top 3 at the end of the season, but you’re having a laugh if you believe that we will be. People like Danny Kedwell should also shut up regards to promotion comments, we haven’t got a chance. Players & supporters should be happy with 16th place this season.

It’s now time for our supporters to grow up & see the truth that we aren’t good enough. We’ll be taken apart by the top teams in this league because we can’t compete with them. It’s a very sad case, but it’s the truth. Teams such as Bristol Rovers, Crawley Town, Northampton Town, Rotherham United, Shrewsbury Town & Southend United will take us apart this season. Until we have a decent manager, decent funds (not wasted) & League Two players we’ll continue to go no where. Now we need to prepare for Shrewsbury Town next Weekend because the passing that they have in them will give our players the run around. We’ve had it easy with matches v teams like Barnet & Cheltenham Town at the start of the season, but when the BIG boys come up we get STUFFED! We have been found out already in our first match against one of the BIG promotion candidates & this proves that we aren’t up to promotion. So shut up & be happy with 16th place this season because that’s all we’re fit for with a Non League manager, Non League players & wasted finances by a manager who shouldnt be here now. Hessenthaler is a manager that no other Football League club would take; he IS a Non League manager.

Bad managers that do not get results get the sack, Hessenthaler is no different & should be gone.

    - Congratulations to Rotherham United, you ARE a top 3 team & WILL get promoted this season.

to sum up, we were undone by the first half decent side we have played

we huffed and puffed the first half and only created a couple of half chances, which we failed to convert.

hessenthaler's lack of tactical know how was glaringly obvious all last season, and the wimp of a man has not even had the honesty, integrity and courtesy to apologise for last season's woeful showing. sadly, this season the performances have not improved one bit. yes, we have been a bit more solid at the back, but against poorer teams.

hess has got the balance of the team all wrong - we have no width, lack of pace at the back that was exposed once again yesterday, this time with consequences - a goalkeeper who is just as weak as julian was, zero firepower up front - even at 4-5-1 kedwell should of scored at least one goal in open play by now - we have no movement off the ball, are slow and lethargic and can only kick the ball sideways and back before resorting to a hopeless long ball - yesterday rotherham showed how goals should be scored - something we have not managed all season yet - when will people realise that hess is just not up to the job? he isn't a 'young' manager anymore - younger, better managers are starting out in the game and overtaking him rapidly - no other league team has even wanted him and nor will they.

together frampton and lawrence are too slow and similar - both great players at this level, but will get found out for lack of pace.

spiller was woeful yesterday, runs around a lot, wins a few balls, then gives it away with very poor distribution - but he plays as he is hess's blue eyed boy - and he is also dreadful at set pieces and wastes every corner and freee kick, but takes them and he sees himself in the david beckham mould!

putting a few good players together does not make a good team, something hess does not seem to get with the balance of signings he has made - he should have signed one less midfielder and gone for another forward or a pacy centre-back

it is going to be a long season

We were beaten by a better team on the day. That said, Hessy seems incapable of adapting tactics to suit situations. Sorry but Flitney continues to look like an accident waiting to happen. The back four looked jittery when the opposition ran at them, especially from wide positions where both Fuller and Martin failed to control their opponents. The central partnership of Lawrence and Frampton didn`t handle the directness of the Rotherham strikers either, especially in the second half. Richards no nonsense approach is surely called for. Midfield were a mixed bunch with Spiller and Montrose lively in patches, but Lee at times resembles a headless chicken, Weston a disinterested party and Payne, well let`s just say today he appears to have had a legitimate excuse for a fitful display. Kedwell is a willing workhorse, that is, a Clydedale rather than a thoroughbred, but alone up front he is completely lost. The substitutions yielded little, literally in Jackman`s case. Rooney clearly has issues that need resolving. His loose cannon approach at times is a joy to behold, at others, a liability. Management need to talk to this boy or he`s in danger of becoming a lost soul and that would be sad. Oli, lets not even mention him. We`ll beat Rotherham at Priestfield, you`ll see.

As someone with sense posted a reality check today against a good side, even without LeFondre. Conceded and ended up chasing the game and punished because of it. Yes we need a striker but not just anyone, we need the right player otherwise we end up with nothing better than Oli or Payne. It is early days yet and come May next year we will be there or there about. We are one striker short of being a top side. COYG! Oh and Dave, you need to get laid, sooo badly!

Lol @ Dave!! First defeat of the season and a heavy one, even without Le Fondre playing. For me Oli isn't good enough at this level. He's an athlete but not a good footballer. Another striker please Hess and Scally. I hear Cody's got an empty diary!!

Reality check, not good enough for top 3 me thinks. No firepower whatsoever.Bad management has left Gills with no time to wheel and deal regards a goalscorer. If Gills don't have the money to bring in quality in that area then they have no chance.A 20 goal a season striker is needed ,if we can't get one then we should stop dreaming of promotion it's as simple as that.

Hessenthaler you are a complete and utter idiotic thicko useless lazy excuse of a manager. Anyone who did not see this coming was just ignoring the obvious.YOU JUST SIT IN YOUR OFFICE WK AFTER WK DOING absolutely nothing. What drival are you going to come up with this week.It is 100 % obvious to me that you are not a good enough manager to take Gills up.Leave now and take the equally useless OLI & PAYNE with you.Next sat will prove your incompetance.
