Brighton & Hove Albion 1 Gillingham 0

A second half penalty proved costly for Gillingham as they crashed out of the Carling Cup in the first round.

Brighton scored their winning goal from the penalty spot on 66 minutes with Ashley Barnes converting for the Championship team, after Andy Frampton had felled Will Buckley in the box.

Gillingham, who lined up with an unchanged team from the one which beat Cheltenham 1-0 in the league on Saturday, showed they could match their higher league opponents in the opening stages.

The hosts, who also opened their season with a win, were looking nervy at the back and one misplaced pass put Chris Whelpdale in the clear. Keeper Casper Ankergren made the save and the follow-up from Danny Kedwell was cleared off the line.

Brighton warmed up as the first half wore on and at least three chances fell at the feet of striker Craig Noone, but he was unable to get a shot on target, despite having the home side’s best chances.

Kedwell put a header over the bar for the Gills as the chances began to dry up.

Gus Poyet’s side had pace in abundance and they were giving Barry Fuller a busy workout down the left. Fuller ended up in the book for one late challenge and moments later got the faintest touches on another tackle, as the 1,328 fans following the Gills behind the goal held their breath.

Noone ended the first half with another miss. He received the ball at the far post, unmarked, but smashed the effort into the side netting.

The half had ended with Brighton well on top and they came close early in the second half, with Noone finding the target with a low shot that Ross Flitney got down well to save.

From a corner the Gills caused a scare when Danny Spiller’s cross was cleared only as far as Lewis Montrose, whose header back in was hooked clear by Marcus Painter.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler looked to shake things up on the hour by bringing Curtis Weston on in place of Charlie Lee.

The Gills were behind on 66 minutes when Frampton’s foul on Buckley led referee Brendan Malone to point to the spot and Barnes converted.

Mr Malone took his yellow card count to seven in the final moments when a foul from Stefan Payne on Romain Vincelot saw most of the players from both teams confront each other.

The game lost its way in the final stages, with fouls from both sides and the referee making some curious decisions.

Gills: Flitney, Fuller (Fish 80mins), Martin, Frampton, Lawrence, J Payne, Spiller (S Payne 72mins), Montrose, Lee (Weston 58mins), Whelpdale, Kedwell. Subs: Gazzaniga, King, Richards, Rance.

Brighton: Ankergren, Greer, Dunk, Barnes, Noone, Calderon, Dicker, Vincelot, Painter, Bridcutt, Buckley. Subs: Brezovan, Navarro, Sparrow, Agdestein, Taricco, Cook, Bergkamp.

Attendance: 16,295.

TBH that was not a penalty , Albion were targeting our left n right backs for a reason last night & the penalty was going to come at some point.

Still a good battle from both sides.......i just hope we can get in two strikers this week as we need one on the bench imo as well as on the pitch.

Decent all round team performance tonight - no individual was outstanding but played together well as a team.
Only weak spot was Fuller in first half who was done time and again but to his credit was far better 2nd half.
Kedwell did best he could but again showed the need for him to have a partner up front.
Stefan Payne worked hard when he came on - good on him as deserves chance.
Referee somehow managed to book 7 Gills although with a couple of exceptions unsure how. That is now two poor referees in two games.
Another performance like that @ Crewe & we will get @ least a point.

All in all not a bad performance I thought considering they are two divisions above. So I'm quite happy. They had lots more pace and that's what did for us in the end but to be expected when playing a championship side. Bring on Crewe, very interested to see how we get on there now. I'm heartened by the performance tonight.

Thought it was a good turn out from your lot tonight. I was actually quite impressed with Gillingham for the majority of the game, they seemed very organised and weren't lacking heart. Bit peeved at the tackles near the end, the one from Payne that sparked the confrontation deserved a red no question. You were beaten by a very weak penalty and if you play like that every game you wont be far off come the end of the season. We rested a few players and also experimented with the formation but you still gave us a good game. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Fred you do know Brighton are in the championship! Very unlucky not to take them to extra time.

We got stuffed at Norwich this time last year, and had 2 points less in the league.

just cannot believe hess has left us so light up front, we managed 1 goal in the 3 pre-season games at home, playing 4-5-1

surely even his limited intelligence could see that?

nope, he starts the season that way and we barely get a win against a team that we should be beating comfortably at home, given the chairman's investment

again tonight, we just could not scor e- kedwell, thourhg all his work and effort, will not get anymore than 10 goals this season and some of those will be penalties

we are devoid of ideas, pace will quite literally come unstauck playing like this

weak penalty, and a bizarre referee, anyone who thinks we are good enough to go up yet get real

Looks like we embarked on a 'Foul Fest!' I love effort and a bit of commitment but these yellows are gonna hurt us if we carry on like this. Poyet didn't mess around with his team selection, we did well to keep it down to one - nil.

Cant believe Hessy picked his strongest team in non competition and we also picked up 6 bookings. Thought we wanted promotion, who cares about the league cup... Great support from the Gills though as usual...
