Macclesfield Town 0 Gillingham 0

Gillingham were held to a second successive goalless draw in League 2.

In a match that had few chances, the Gills will be looking to the positives after extending their unbeaten run to seven games.

Chances were few and far between in the opening half for both teams but Macclesfield posed more problems. Gillingham’s best spell came at the start of the second half.

It needed a sliding tackle from Jack Payne to deny Matthew Hamshaw after 12 minutes, while at the other end, shots from Jo Kuffour and Jack Payne were blocked before getting anywhere near Jose Veiga’s goal.

Macclesfield always looked dangerous when the ball was whipped into the box as they had the height advantage. Nat Brown flicked a chance just wide for the hosts and Andy Frampton had to hack the ball clear just before the interval.

Gillingham’s best chance of the opening half was made by Danny Kedwell, as he turned left-back Carl Tremarco inside out, but Veiga was there to save the shot from an angle.

The Gills made a good start to the second half and soon after the restart Weston forced Veiga into making a decent save to deny his acrobatic effort.

Moments later Veiga was called upon again, parrying Danny Jackman’s low drive before denying Weston from the follow-up.

At the other end, Vinny Mukendi beat the Gills offside trap but trod on the ball.

The early goal-mouth action soon dried up before, with 70 minutes gone, Macclesfield’s George Donnelly dragged a shot wide from distance.

With just over 10 minutes left, the Gills introduced on-loan West Ham striker Frank Nouble to try and create a winner.

Fellow substitute Chris Whelpdale tried a shot from distance but that was blocked by a defender. There was little else of note in a game that won’t live long in the memory.

Gillingham: Flitney, Lee (Lawrence 64mins), Martin, Frampton, Richards, J Payne, Jackman, Montrose, Weston (Whelpdale 88mins), Kedwell, Kuffour (Nouble 78mins). Subs: S Payne, Gazzaniga.

Macclesfield: Veiga, Bateson, Tremarco, Brown, Donnelly, Mukendi (Fairhurst 74mins), Daniel, Diagne, Brisley, Wedgbury, Hamshaw. Subs: Morgan, Mendy, Boden, Thomas.

Attendance: 1,724

I have to agree that Macclesfield aren't as good as they were last year but they are definitely not a 100% 3 pointer. If you look at the table you will see that they have only lost 2 games at home this season and they beat Swindon and AFC Wimbledon just to name a few. Yes we should of won but we didn't, life goes on.

    To Jim!

Macclesfield are NOT a "good team". Their best players departed them in the summer, they are not the team that they were last season when they took us to the cleaners at Priestfield. Their team this season IS made up of School boys. They'll be lucky to have two subs on the bench this coming midweek. Macclesfield away is a 100% three point banker, but our manager & squad are NOT up to it. That is a VERY poor Macclesfield team & our twenty times their budget squad didn't even beat it!

    HESSENTHALER HAS TO GO!

You guys are being harsh on Macclesfield. Yes I admit that we should of won and most of us were expecting us to win but Macclesfield are a good team. Sure you might look at the table and think their 13th we'r 7th but they have only lost 2 games at home all season. I listened on the radio and it sounded like we played well so at least we are making progress.

A lot of the build up play today was very good, and we were well on top until Charlie Lee sadly went off injured. We should have been ahead by then with all the pressure we'd had.

It was definitely 2 points dropped, but we're now 7 games unbeaten. Seeing as Macc have only lost twice at home this season it is still not a terrible result by any means.

    Up the Gills.

there are a small minority of morons who are biased against hessenthaler, probably cos they have to direct their frustrations somewhere and he is the easiest target for them. why are they so frustrated? probably because their lives are such miserable failures. funny how they never uttered a word on here after the bournemouth and orient results?! there silence was deafening.

hessy is still learning the trade and how anybody can be so miserable and negative about our recent form is totally beyond me???!!!!!

today could have gone better of course but for gods sake cheer up, we are still doing well. but oh, i forgot, we are massive gillingham and should be walking this league shouldnt we? silly me. idiots

If you are going to use Macc stats try 8 pts from 7 games.Macclesfield away is no easy fixture. It's not the most difficult sure but they ran down the clock and were happy with a draw.If their manager saw us as mid table side or non league as some of you lot claim. He would have thrown more players forward and tried to win.

A few people are going a bit overboard about this result. We are now hard to beat home or away.Something that was never done by Mr Stimson (Ron). The result wasn't great but it's also not the end of the world sure we need 32+ points away this seasonthat is still on.We have 14 from 11 this season. This was just one point towards that.I still think we can get into that top three come May. Our away record is now sound something we have not managed for a few years.A year or so back we could have gone to Needham Market or somewhere away and still lost.

Totally agree with GJ. We won't play many teams as poor as Macclesfield this year. Teams like Crawley will go there for the three points and get them rather than be happy with the point as Hess was. Montrose and Jackman were woeful all game yet stayed on whilst our MOTM (Weston) was subbed with a couple of mins to go. Nothing like giving Whelpdale a chance Hess!! It's about time some of you took your blinkers off and wake up and smell the coffee.

So if any of you think your opinion more valid than mine then let me hear it. I would love to say we played well but the facts are we were poor, fortunately they were even worse. So I stand by my opinion that games like this we need to win.

Well that was a frustrating game. To be honest performances like that won't get us up, we need to win these ones and to be honest we never looked like getting a goal. We had no width and Kedwell was having to come deep to get the ball and I don't understand why Weston was taken off for Whelpdale?? Jackman was poor and Montrose had looked lost. Long old journey for very little effort by the team. Hessenthaler you didn't change anything and if you couldnt see that things needed to be changed then you need to move on.
