Leyton Orient 0 Gillingham 1

Gillingham eliminated League 1 team from the FA Cup for the second time this season on Saturday.

A first-half strike from Curtis Weston was enough to book the Gills a place in round three of the competition. The win at Leyton Orient comes after the Gills had beaten Bournemouth in the first round.

The third round draw takes place live on ITV1 on Sunday at around 2.40pm. The Gills are ball number 50 and Manchester United are 25.

Gillingham frustrated the hosts in the first half and limited them to few chances, with Leon McSweeney firing wide and Lee Cook sending an effort straight into the hands of keeper Ross Flitney.

Andy Hessenthaler had opted to hand Stefan Payne a rare start and he was played in behind Danny Kedwell. Also offering support was Weston and Danny Jackman in an attack-minded line-up.

It was a formation that was equally adept at keeping things tight and they ensured Flitney had a reasonably quiet first 45 minutes. Gillingham found their range quicker than the hosts and Lewis Montrose hit a low shot through a crowd of bodies but keeper Ben Alnwick was there to save.

Shouts of a penalty rang out loud around the Matchroom Stadium from the big away following after it appeared that Scott Cuthbert had handled. Referee Phillip Gibbs waved play on.

The half ended on a high for the Gills when Charlie Lee slung in a long throw and Weston hooked the shot across Alnwick to give Hessenthaler's men the lead.

Kedwell should have put the Gills 2-0 up just before the hour, when Alnwick made a hash of his clearance which fell to the feet of the Gills striker, but he was unable to convert from close range.

Orient had the ball in the net with 64 minutes gone but the effort from half-time substitute Jamie Cureton was ruled out for offside.

The Gills were looking to hit the hosts on the break in the latter stages as Orient threw men forward. It made for a tense finish.

Weston lobbed an effort just over the bar with five minutes left and Dennis Oli hit the back of the home end with a shot. Home fans had appeals for their own penalty in the last minute when Stephen Dawson went down under Danny Jackman’s challenge but once again Gibbs was unmoved.

In the fourth minute of injury time, Lee Cook smashed a shot off the underside of the bar but seconds later the final whistle blew to the relief of the travelling support.

Gillingham: Flitney, Lee, Martin, Richards, Frampton, J Payne, Jackman, Montrose, Weston (Fish 90mins), Kedwell, S Payne (Oli 68mins). Subs not used: Davies, Rance, Essam, Evans, Gazzaniga.

Orient: Alnwick, Chorley (Forbes 46mins), Cuthbert, Dawson, McSweeney, Porter (Mooney 79mins), Spring, Laird (Cureton 46mins), Cook, Clark, Lisbie. Subs not used: Butcher, Cestor, Smith, Lobjoit.

Attendance: 3,763.

I too am looking forward to Pulis getting a standing ovation - and I then hope we give a good account of ourselves, whatever the result, in front of a full house.

As for post Christmas, can you tell me if you'd be happy with the same SIX results post Christmas as we had last season? I'd be delighted!

After Christmas 2011 we recorded the following:

    3-0 WIN
    1-0 WIN
    0-1 DEFEAT
    5-1 WIN
    1-0 WIN
1-1 DRAW .....I'll take 13 points from the 6 games after Christmas any day :-)

    UP THE GILLS !!!!!!

You wont learn will you? FA Cup fevour has got all of you and we all know it wil end in tears when the only last decent manager this club had Tony Pulis returns with the now mighty Stoke City to bury your FA Cup dreams.

Once that happens we will go a defeat run of about 6 games as we always do after Christmas.

What will happen to the money generated by these wins?

Will Scally buy a bigger Turkey in Dubai?

Its the league that matters and all these cup run games do is deflect the team from concentrating on promotion.

Well done on getting this far in the FAC but at what price to league promotion.

Notice puffing billy Kedwell still not scoring.

Not a doom mongerer just a realist

Thought we bossed the whole game today and thoroughly deserved the win. Have to say though that Orient were very poor which definitely helped.
Weston was magnificent in midfield and Richards didn't put a foot wrong and looked very assured (not often you can say that! - keep it up). Flitney also looked back to his composed best as well, and Lee again looked good at right-back - need to keep him there.
Great day out and now looking forward to 3rd Round draw (Old Trafford, Anfield, or St James Park please).

Ron you've amazed me with a decent post. Well done, and thank you.

However, I still dare you to shout Hessenthaler out while more than 1000 of us away fans are singing Hessenthaler's barmy army like we were today. I take it you didn't join in with huge rendition of one of my favourite chants of all time.

What songs did you sing today Ron?

    Best wishes as ever.

What a great day out. After last weekend's disappointment against Bradford, it was a pleasure to take my 7 year old daughter to her first away game. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be amongst the real fans - bar one. Ron, if you ever turn up to an away game or home for that matter, wear something so I know who you are cos we think you are the most cantankerous f-wit to grace the club and my daughter wants to tell you to grow up. Don't like it, the Manager, the fans the style or the players? Well, just do one Ron, Ron, just do one Ron. GFCTWD.

A top result Hessenthaler, well done. The first half performance was a pleasure to watch, it was a fine display. At times in the second half & in particular at the end we were hanging on & got lucky. We now need to put two half performances together in matches. Just playing well in one half of a match will not work every time. Some players have started to peform at last.

I hope we draw a Non League side at home in the next round to stop any non concentrations on the league kicking in. If we drew a BIG team the players & supporters will lose focus towards the league. Get the Non League side, let the cup take a back seat until the next round & concentrate on that league form.

Fantastic to see Danny Jackman this season playing once again to his best, just like he did when he first ever came to the football club first time round. If Curtis Weston can keep up his peformances then he won't be here next season, he can play Championship, he HAS got that much potential. I do feel that for the cup forward we lack strikers with the loan players being unable to play. We also need to sort out these loan deals as they're about to expire.

In pre season Leyton Orient took us to the cleaners with a great display, but today we put it back on them. I still don't feel we have the manager or squad for promotion, but prove me wrong. I DO feel that there are at least 7 sides in our league that are better than us & will once again fill those award winning positions come the end of the season.

A great performance today Hessenthaler, now put TWO half peformances together in matches.

I happen to not agree with you, because I think Hess can get us promoted, but I admire the fact you're man enough to admit you were wrong today. You've shown us that you love the Gills and that's what matters above anything else.

Let me make it clear i have never criticised the players you signed in the summer- i'm happy with all of them, i hope there are more to come in january. My criticism is about you, i don't think you are capable enough to keep it up, i don't think you will get us promoted. That is my view, but no one would be happier than me should you prove me completely wrong.
