Gillingham claimed much-needed joy on away soil with victory at Aldershot in League 2 on Saturday.

The Gills held a 2-0 lead at the break, thanks to goals from Frank Nouble and Chris Whelpdale, but their advantage was halved with 10 minutes left as Scott Davies struck for the hosts.

A determined second-half effort saw the visitors hang on to make it two league wins on the spin.

The Gills had opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Nouble converted Danny Jackman’s corner.

Jackman took a number of corner kicks in the first half and every one of them caused problems for the home side. On two occasions the ball fell to Matt Lawrence, but both efforts were cleared off the line by Aldershot.

The hosts did come close to scoring from a set piece themselves, with a free-kick on the edge of the box that Luke Guttridge looked to have smashed into the top corner, before Ross Flitney turned the effort over the bar.

End-to-end action saw Shots keeper Jamie Young make an even better save to deny Danny Kedwell and the Gills midway through the half. The striker was thwarted moments later when Aaron Brown cleared the ball from under his own bar.

The second came on 36 minutes and it was Whelpdale with the goal, striking from 25 yards, with an effort that keeper Young flapped at and watched as it nestled low into the goal.

It was Whelpdale’s fourth goal of the season with his other three coming in away wins at Crewe, Hereford and Torquay.

Aldershot, as expected, put on the pressure at the start of the second half and Darren Jones had a free header from Alex Rodman’s free-kick that went straight to Flitney. The Gills defence needed full concentration to keep the hosts at bay.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men broke out of defence on the hour and Jackman came close to making it 3-0 but his low shot fizzed just wide of Young’s post. Whelpdale almost scored another himself 10 minutes later, with a volley that went narrowly over the bar.

At the other end Aldershot were running out of ideas and defender Jones tried his luck from distance but dragged the effort well wide.

With 10 minutes left, the Gills just had to hang on but a great strike from substitute Davies gave the hosts renewed hope as it flew in past Flitney from 25 yards. At 2-1 it was going to be a tense finish.

The Gills had to play four minutes of stoppage time, during which headers from Brown and Collins sailed wide, but the referee brought the game to an end spelling delight for the 669 travelling fans.

Gillingham: Flitney, Martin, Lee, Lawrence, Richards, J Payne, Jackman (Weston 87mins), Whelpdale, Kedwell, Nouble (Montrose 84mins), Kuffour. Subs not used: King, Oli, Gazzaniga.

Aldershot: Young, Herd, Straker, Jones, Brown, Guttridge, McGlashan (Mekki 84mins), Rankine, Hylton, Rodman (Davies 66mins), Vincenti (Collins 54mins). Subs not used: Morris, Day.

It's mysteriously very quiet in here. Where are you Ron? Ron, who are ya?

When things are going bad lots of people have got lots to say, but when results go well this message board goes strangely silent.

    How odd.

Up the Giils. Gills until I die

Well said Nige. Wondering if this is Hungry Fox Nige, if so hello from Jim. Nothing short of solid first half, two goals flattered Aldershot and frankly gone are the days when a two goal lead is enough for us - sorry but it's true. Can't wait until Tuesday, great opportunity to get behind the boys and great preparation for three key games pre Christmas, it's going to be tougher after the turn of the year. We need to get Kuffour on board, Nouble until NY at least, shore up at the back and try to put a better deal out for Rooney. Things are starting to look alright. GFCTID.

The first half performance was arguably the best 45mins of football played this season by Gills. We totally dominated and frankly Shots were lucky to only be two down at the break. They couldn't have argued had it been 6 or 7. True to say a couple of mistakes at the back but these vastly outweighed by our attacking prowess. Jackman in particular was fantastic with every single cross or corner being spot on.
However, have to ask what happened second half? We completely downed tempo and let them come at us and it ended up with us holding on. Luckily they were a poor side and we got away with it but they deserved their goal, albeit overall we deserved the win due to our first half performance.
Overall very happy with the three points and the first half display, but need to question why the drop in 2nd half.
Now to look forward to hopefully seeing off Bournemouth and earning a trip to the East London barrow boys.

It's all very quiet on here tonight. Just why is that? There's normally 50 calls for Hess to go by this time on a Saturday night.

Well done Gills. Well done away support, well done the boys.

Ron, where are you? Is it true you've decided to go and support Maidstone instead?

Back to the question at hand ...yes, it was very important to get back to back wins and put on a good performance, especially 1st half. However, it will never be good enough for Ron, Dave, Ron's Mum and his wife - lol

    Up the Gills!

That'll do nicely. Never going to be pretty in this league and if we do get promoted, it certainly won't get any prettier. So for the record boys and girls, get a grip, bite down hard and enjoy the moment. Stay away if you have nothing good to say about the club, you're not 'kin' welcome anymore. See you next Tuesday.
