Andy Hessenthaler hails Gillingham's first-half display against Aldershot

Andy Hessenthaler labelled his side’s first half performance in the 2-1 victory at Aldershot on Saturday as the “most complete” of the season so far.

In the opening 45 minutes the Gills bossed the game and laid a winning foundation thanks to goals from Frank Nouble and Chris Whelpdale.

Hessenthaler (pictured) felt his side could have been in an even more commanding position after a dominant opening half display.

He said: “We expected them to come back at us a bit in the second half but I thought the first half was probably the most complete performance from our team this season, in respect of us playing with the ball and without it.

“The talking and the organising was terrific and if we had gone in 4-0 at half-time it would have probably been the right result.

“We looked like we were going to score every time we went forward and from set-plays we had a couple cleared off the line.”

Aldershot matched the Gills in the second half but only managed the one goal, scored late on, and weren’t able to overhaul the first half lead built by Hessenthaler’s team.

“We are away from home and so we expected an onslaught at times and we had to stay strong,” said the Gills boss.

“They scored with about 10 minutes to go but I thought our defending was terrific. They took risks going forward and we had a couple of opportunities to get a third goal.

“All-in-all, with our first half performance, we deserved to win the game,”

The Gills looked strong in attack – led once again by Danny Kedwell.

“He was outstanding, they all were,” said Hessenthaler.

“We’ve got players who are a threat going forward, like Frank Nouble and Jo Kuffour, who is a livewire. He was unlucky not to score a couple himself.

“Keds, like I said last week, epitomises the football club. You have to work your socks off for 90 plus minutes and he just keeps going.”

Kedwell played despite suffering an on-going toe injury but Hessenthaler decided to risk him anyway.

“We went with him and I am glad we did,” he said.

Hessenthaler made four changes to his side and left Matt Fish out, as he was struggling with a groin injury, while Luke Rooney was left out after failing to agree a contract extension.

markmywords - are you sure? with our potent forward line and a quality midfield where even Rooney can be left out of the squad and there's more than enough quality to replace. the way they played particularly first half suggests to me use manager is starting to go the right way about things. therefore i would say we'll win MOST games from now up until Christmas and hopefully until the end of the season where we'll be top three. congrats to Hess and the team.

It seems that a few deluded fans are getting carried away with the mini run that we are having at the moment, it won't last with Hessenthaler in charge.
The man has an appalling record as Gills manager despite the last 3 games and his record in cup competitions since his return is laughable and shameful.
We all know that Gills will fall flat on their faces because of the manager we have.
MARK MY WORDS GILLS WILL LOSE AGAINST AN APPALLING BRADFORD SIDE AND WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER LEAGUE GAME THIS SIDE OF CHRISTMAS.
    HESSENTHALER IS A JOKE.

    Superb first half.

How much was down to the manager, can only be guessed at, but if the players can start believing in this type of play, I suspect promotion is a realistic target in spite of the manager.

Credit where it`s due, it was a fine all round performance.

A fantastic performance first half Hessenthaler, well done. The first half of the match was the teams best performance this season & we got the ball down & played some football for a change. The second half however was not so good & we could have easily let that two goal lead slip. We should have taken more of our chances within the first half. We were nearly made to pay for this in the second half & came off lucky in the end.

It was not the complete performance, but only half of a performance. I feel that the substituions should have been made a lot earlier than what they were. Why did we still have three strikers on the pitch on 70 mins when 2-0 up away from home? We also did not close Andershot Town down much within the second period & gave them far too many spaces to progress forward down the wings.

Overall a decent end result, but to win promotion you would expect to win at Aldershot Town. When we get our chances we must take them, that could have been 5-0 to us first half. Now lets see if Hessenthaler is up for a cup match for once, can he win his first one? This will be the 8th attempt.

To the boy Rooney, pathetic. You are a good player at this level & you show all the signs of progress for the future. For you to go now would be far too early. You need to be playing within this level of football right now. Your performances on the pitch this season have been decent, but we need to see more of them. You are only a young lad, you will make it further up the leagues one Day. For now get your head down, sign that deal & show us on the pitch what you have been showing already. The only fault is that you need to pass more, look up for your team mates, you can't do everything yourself. You are a good player, with more games you can become a great player & then you will get that move up the leagues. This club needs you right now & you need this club.

3 Points Hessenthaler & for also stopping Rooney from playing within this match well done. Also fantastic on signing Jack Payne, another great talent at a young age. Now win your first cup match!

Well done boys for yesterday and well done Hess for taking a stand against Rooney. Unlike Stimson, Hess actually gave the kid a chance and a run in the side. This is how Rooney repays the manager.

I understand a more experienced professional seeking out a better contract elsewhere if he can get it but Rooney is still a kid still learning the trade, with very little end product. Warning to Rooney, there are so many gifted footballers who don't make a career in the professional game, there is more to this than you realise. Head in the clouds and badly advised.

Well done boys, cannot remember the last time we won away at Aldershot?

Is Charlie Lee the answer at right back?

Silly boy Luke Rooney, I hope your mum has told you the same, you were a pretty decent player with promise, but your an ex Gill now!

Dejavu where rooney is concerned. Instead of behaving like a preening prima donna, he should knuckle down, sign the contract and accept how lucky he is.There are still many players released in the summer who would relish the opportunity to play the game they love.He and his agent need to stop believing their own hype, sweep the over inflated ego under the carpet, and get on with committing to the cause.Failing that, he can always run his existing contract down, leave on a free, and take his chance on the footballers meat market.

i actually like rooney and rate him, but if i remember his last contract...rooney went about it all in the wrong way.
be it(rooney or agent) it's bad how he conducts himself either with his comments each week or when a deal is to be done!

if he feels the way he does now then....get rid, yes a decent player when he wants to be, but like hess said...no bigger than the gillingham fc!!!

can't believe his agent is not behind his build up though!

first of all, i wanna say well done to andy and the boys - fantastic result today, we played really well especially in the first half, so a great away victory.

I wanna say a big thank you to Mr Danny Kedwell who i think is an absolute giant of a player for us and he is reminding me more and more of andy hess in his prime every time i see him play - what a fantatsic signing he is for us this season, an absolute bargain, so credit where it's due to scally but most of course the lions' share of the credit should go to the management because they are the ones who picked this player

To the boo boys and miserablist doom n gloom depressive mongers i wanna say this - SUCK THAT ONE AND TELL ME THE FLAVOUR

And finally to Mr Luke Rooney I wanna say this - I think you are either a very foolish young man with an over estimated opinion of yourself, or you are being very badly advised by somebody, either way good luck for the future cos i think you're gonna need it mate, as well as a lot of caution, i seriously wish you well but i think you've made a big mistake by turning down the contract that has been offered to you by the club. i really hope you prove me wrong but i think you are being very disingenuous to GFC right now.

WELL DONE HESS AND LADS, ONWARDS AND UPWARDS, UP THE GILLS!!!
