Gillingham 0 Bradford City 0

Garry Richards gets up high for a challenge

Gillingham were held on home turf by lowly Bradford City on Saturday.

Neither team managed to find a breakthrough at Priestfield and the Gills were unable to replicate their impressive FA Cup form.

Home striker Jo Kuffour hit the post with less than two minutes gone but goal-scoring opportunities were extremely limited for the home side in the first 45 minutes.

They were facing a side without a win on their travels this season but they were more than a match for the Gills in the opening half.

Bradford should have scored just before the half hour mark but striker James Hanson’s close-range header was saved instinctively by Gills keeper Ross Flitney. Hanson smashed the follow-up over the bar with the goal gaping.

The same player glanced a header wide moments later as Bradford continued to threaten.

Gills’ best moments were coming down their right flank where Frank Nouble was giving full-back Marcel Seip a torrid time. Despite his efforts the half ended goalless with Kuffour’s early acrobatic shot the closest the home side had come to scoring.

Gillingham had started the game with three forwards, along with Curtis Weston who was offering support, but changed things around at the break as they left just Danny Kedwell and Kuffour in attack.

Bradford remained dangerous after the turnaround with winger Kyel Reid causing problems. With an hour gone it was still goalless and the closest Gills had come in the second half was a deflected shot from Weston which went wide.

The Gills had won with a stylish display in the FA Cup against Bournemouth days before but were struggling to gain control against the side which started the afternoon third from bottom in League 2. There were few highlights for the season's best crowd to get excited about.

Kuffour had the ball at his feet in the box, after Weston nodded down Kedwell’s cross, but after turning and shooting he found keeper Jon McLaughlin in his way. At the other end, with 20 minutes left, Craig Fagan blasted a shot wide.

Gillingham were let off the hook with 15 minutes left as the linesman’s flag denied substitute Nahki Wells a goal as he side-footed home Reid’s cross. The off-side verdict kept things level. The same player put the ball into the side netting with seven minutes left.

A frantic finish saw chances at both ends in the final minute and Gillingham came agonisingly close to scoring, with Stefan Payne shooting across the face of the goal. The slightest of touches would have put it in but Bradford hacked it away.

Gillingham: Flitney, Lawrence, Martin, Frampton, Richards, J Payne, Lee, Weston, Nouble (S Payne 84mins), Kuffour, Kedwell (Montrose 79mins). Subs: Oli, Fish, Gazzaniga.

Bradford: McLaughlin, Seip, Ramsden, Davies, Oliver, Hanson, Hannah (Wells 71mins), Flynn Ravenhill, Reid, Fagan. Subs: Mitchell, Moore, Duke, Devitt.

Attendance: 7,074

So I can't call myself a Gillingham Fan as I made the decision not to go to another game of "HOOF BALL" for £20+ whilst Hessenthaler is still in charge then? That is my choice and that makes me no less of a supporter of Gillingham Football Club than yourself. Just because I don't agree with the current person/management team in charge and happen to have other things to do on a Saturday than sit through another 90 minutes of pure rubbish football (Yes I know this is League 2 and not the Premiership) so its hardly going to be pretty now is it, but abut of entertainment value would be nice once in awhile!

Considering this squad is meant to be the "best ever" (Paul Scally's words) they should be higher placed than where WE currently are at the moment.

You probably wont agree with this anyway, but I cant see US progressing out of this league under Hessenthaler, maybe he will prove me wrong come May!

As for the tickets for the Play-Offs and a Wembley trip well I wont be in that 'Q' anytime soon unless theres a drastic improvement in results but then again Hessenthaler I doubt wont be going anywhere soon so I won't be sitting in the once very loud now you can hear a pin drop most of the time Rainham End anytime soon and Gills wont be getting out of League 2 anytime soon with him in charge FACT!

See you at Priestfield sometime soon maybe Gills4ever..... or not!

@who the hell are BRAPFORD you say that you will never step inside priestfield again while Hessy is Manager then you have no right calling yourself a Gills fan and that goes for all the others calling for hessy's head because duh unless I get this wrong a true fan supports the team as a whole not just one player or manager yes the game against Bradford was one of the worst I have seen in a long time no defence hoofing the ball no going forwards an absolute shambles of a game but for those that did not know it was only the first game in 24 that we have come away with a 0 - 0 draw we are 7th in the table now most would settle for that at this stage I for one booed the team off as a whole for the c..p they played on saturday and perhaps they took note of all the other fans that did and will up their game next time out perhaps. Now if we do make the playoffs I bet you and others like you will Q up to get tickets if it was a wembley showdown again so all I can say to you and the wannabe so called gills fans ha joke go back to playing footie manager on the comp before coming out with such stupid comments SUPPORT THE TEAM OR GO AWAY

You've missed my point entirely. I'm not talking about whether he should stay or go. I'm talking about the way many on here express their feelings that he should go.

I have no problem at all with people saying things like 'Great player but tactically naive manager. Not up to the job and time he went'. Calling him a fool, Hessenfailure etc, in my opinion, shows no respect for all he's done for this club.

I'm sure Hessy himself wouldn't give a toss and it'd be water off a duck's back, and in the grand scheme of things it makes no odds to me either, but of course people get wound up and offended when he's talked about as just some journeyman manager who's rolled up at GFC and failed to take it back to the glory days of the early 2000s. He's a massive part of those glory days and the reason so many fans have expectations that we should be League One or Championship.

I don't think that should be forgotten, and you'd make a better case to the so-called 'apologists' if the tone was less "clueless fool", more "sorry Hess, not good enough".

If you'd've read my first post properly you'd realise that I'm far from sold on the idea of Hess as our managerial saviour. No I'm not blind to the lack of tactical nous and awareness. I support him because in the end only 2 men can decide if he stays or goes, and it's not me and you.

Some of the tactics have been incredibly one-dimentional and naive, but at the same time I can imagine a few eyebrows would be raised if a club in the Play-Off places sacked their manager. I'm sure we all did when Newcastle got rid of Hughton for instance.

I don't support Hess over and above Gillingham, but of course I'm a fan of the bloke. If we remember between 1996 and 2006 then we all should be. And I want him to succeed even if I fear he won't. I'd want to see him working with someone like Wally Downes, Mark Robson, Peter Taylor or Lennie Lawrence before I totally give up on him as a manager. I believe he's been hampered hugely by the failure to replace Hendon.

    Sorry to have droned on.

well sam that depends. the 1st thing i would ask you is what the hell have you been watching for the last year and a half? this is not something that has just happened. this is the culmination, the pushing over the edge of watching a team set up by a man who blatantly has no idea.

ask yourself this - do you want gfc to succeed? i do. and i tell you this, hessenthaler has proven over the last year and a half that he is incapable of putting out a motivated, well set up, fit, balanced (ie using the green bits up the side of the pitch) team.

if you're happy with the status quo then you are a hess fan not a gills fan.

what have you been watching through your rose tinted spectacles? get yourself a dose of reality.

They're lone voices largely because people can't be bothered posting on here anymore, as anyone supportive or trying to find positives just gets gloated at when we don't win and labelled an apologist.

I've said all the long that I'm not convinced Hess is the right man (certainly not without a proper assistant), but whilst he's here I'll support him and look for positives. Before Saturday we'd had a month of positives, so it shows Hessenthaler can achieve good things, but Saturday's selection and tactics were baffling.

If you've been watching Gills for 30 years I'm amazed you talk in that way about a bloke who's done what Hess has for the club. It is possible to want him out without resorting to such vitriol and apparent hatred of him. I remember when things started going wrong in his first spell, the chant from the stands wasn't 'f off Hessy' or 'sacked in the morning': it was a resigned and reluctant 'Hessy, time to go'. A little bit of 'kin respect...but then supporters have got immeasurably more demanding and less patient since then.

Yes, not a great performance but a clean sheet, a shot off the post, and a shot cleared off the line, and we're in the play offs.

We can't expect to play well in every game. We've played really well twice against Bournemouth and against Aldershot but we weren't good enough today. Does this stop me believing we can go up? No, it doesn't. So many doom and gllom mongers predicted we'd lose and we didn't. We're now on an unbeaten run which will end at some point, but I think overall we're heading in the right direction. No, I don't wear rose tinted specs. I think a few players looked tired after Tuesday but I also think we're well placed for a promotion push now.

    Up the Gills.

Must admit first time ive been this season, took advantage of the offer price, but what a load of cr*p it was, first half we couldnt string two passes together, and why all the high balls lobbed up front against a team so much taller than most of our team?
2nd half I think the keeper had more of the ball than anyone else!!! how many back passes?? and to keeper that can't kick straight, 50% of his kicks went straight out.
Very disappointing performance, sadly I have got tickets for the Rovers game as well - any offers for two adult and kids tickets?

Luckily the season isnt even at the half way stage yet so don't write off our chances of automatic promotion.

Also most seasons a team very close to the bottom of table at end of November puts together a good run and will be challenging for promotion by season end.

So money on the Gills and Bradford?
