Andy Hessenthaler says Gillingham fortunate to win 'crazy' game against Northampton Town

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler admitted his team were fortunate to edge a seven-goal rollercoaster at Priestfield on Saturday.

The Gills threw away 2-0 and 3-1 leads in League 2 against Northampton before running out 4-3 winners thanks to Danny Kedwell’s penalty in stoppage time.

“We’ve been fortunate but that’s football – that’s what happens,” said Hessenthaler.

“It was a crazy game. I don’t want to be involved in that type of game again, especially at home. Ultimately, it comes down to winning a game of football – sometimes you win ugly and sometimes games like that happens.

“Fortunately for us we ended up winning in the last minute. I’ve been involved in games like that when it has gone the other way.”

Hessenthaler expressed his disappointments at some of his team’s defending after they got themselves into a position of superiority, only to press the self-destruct button in front of their own fans.

“When we went 2-0 up, we stopped doing things that we were good at in respect of stopping them,” reflected Hessenthaler.

“Early on when the ball was played in to Akinfenwa we had enough bodies around him. We got a bit complacent and thought that we should have gone on and got the third and fourth – and we need to learn from that as it cannot happen.

“But we made it too easy (for them) and it was too stretched in the end.

“3-1 is a dangerous scoreline. They got (the second goal) from a straight ball we didn’t deal with. I’ve got to say it was a foul on Charlie Lee – he got a push in the back.

“It was a good set play (for the third goal) but you can’t let players run off you like that, according to the boys Matt Fish got blocked off. It was a clever free-kick.”

Hessenthaler praised his forwards, including the contribution of Frank Nouble, who failed to get on the scoresheet despite having an impressive game down the right flank.

“I always felt that we could still score (a fourth goal) as we had the players up front – but not that late,” said Hessenthaler.

“Frank was a handful most of the afternoon but Kuffour was man-of-the-match by a country mile. It was a terrific hat-trick and he was fantastic for us.”

yes i should rise above it.

i am desperate for gfc to go forward, but the evidence is so plain for all to see ever since hess has been back. what people see that persuades them that he can actually take us forward is beyond me.

we are no further forward than when he took over. in fact we have gone backwards.

during his first reign his win percentage was 33.8%.
    this tenure 36.7%.

to be fair in 2011 we have won 18 out of 43 league games which is 41.8%. still that is a shicking record in this shocking shocking league - especially as the players at his disposal with the right organisation, fitness & motivation should have us walk out of this league.

shame that you have such blind faith in a manager who is so balatantly out of his depth. you seem to gloss over the inept, disorganised, uninspiring shambles that he turns out week in week out.

if you're happy with that fine, but don't lambast the majority of fans who know full well with the players at his disposal spongebob squarepants could get us promoted.

your faith in hess is admirable, but seriously misguided. i will remind you all when we finish mid-table.

no ambition. it's a cut-throat worl out there, if you dont perform, you should be out. as in any walk of life. if you not goood enough, ship out.

priestfield may look a lot flasher these days and have more facilities etc, but the atmosphere is not a patch on what it was when we had the old run down priestfield

Agree with the last two posts. What gets me is these fools actually want us to lose and revel in defeat and moan when we win. Yes the side is not perfect, nor is the manager, far from it. But all you do is week in and week out sl*g the manager off. Spouting the same old tired rants. It is boring. At least some try to be constructive with criticism but most don't. That is abuse rather than debate. Also the Ron's and Dave's slate the manager but other than Oli never criticise the players. Yes Hess picks him, but Lawrence consistently makes mistakes that an experienced player should not make. Look at the goals Saturday. All down to individual errors by experienced defenders who should know better. This is not the manager's fault. Pick on areas where the manager does deserve criticism, a lack of width, the long ball bypassing the midfield.

Most of the stuff on here, whether it is pro Hess or anti Hess is childish arguing written by people who seem to know nothing about the game.

Constructively! Gillingham are underperforming and there are elements that DO need to improve if GFC are to get in with a chance of promotion. I have supported GFC since the days of Peach,Simpson and Tydeman and absolutely love the club before any component within it!

But the boo boys are not helping with their constant abuse and negativity. How about getting behind all associated with OUR club and see if we can encourage and REALLY SUPPORT for a change?

I will give the man credit he has the strikers now in place providing Kuffour becomes a permenant signing. The midfield should be good enough for this level. The defence however is CLEARLY not good enough for a challange on the top 3 places.
This is where Hessenthaler is not up to the job.He is not ruthless enough to admit mistakes and correct them.He will just persivere will the same players in the hope that they will come good.
Sentiment should not come into a managers thoughts when he has a job to to, in this case gain promotion.
In january Gills need to wheel and deal in the transfer market paying particular attention to the defence.
Hessenthaler should already be planning for this. However he is just to lazy to do what is required. He just can't be bothered and this will be is undoing.
Other clubs at the top end of the table will almost certainly strengthen in January or at least tweak their squads ,Hessenthaler will just sit on his hands.MARK MY WORDS.

Come on Hess, you've got to sort out the couple of Big-Time-Charlies who are doing their own thing. A manager, in any sphere of operations, has to manage and friends don't come into it, if you upset someone so what? It will probably do them a power of good. Word has obviously got around that the way to beat the Gills is out wide and you have to address your fullback problem. Either get your own wingers closer to the backs or give one or two of the youngsters a chance. UTG

    Shots on target:

    Gillingham: 5
    Northampton Town: 13

These are the stats from the Gillingham offical website.

Pathetic stats for a team playing at home against a side that hasn't won for 6 matches.

Hessenthaler looked like a child (small enough) who had won a golden ticket to the chocolate factory when the final penalty went in. That was his ticket for an extension in charge. Without that the chants for his head would have drawn & the sack been the case.

Do not be fooled by the lucky end result. In truth this was a very poor match on our side. We were VERY lucky to get anything from the match for we didn't deserve anything. Hessenthaler's half time team talk failed & it needed an added on second half time penalty to save him from the sack.

Next Weekend at Bournemouth this team will again be undone, yet another cup defeat for Hessenthaler who has never manager to win one since his return as manager. 9th in the League Two table isn't good enough for what Scally described as "Our best squad ever". A heavy defeat awaits us next Weekend. Our defence is probably the worst to ever play within the Football League. The defence & goalkeeping needs addressing fast to halt our slide down the table & an FA Cup shocker for us next Weekend.

We have the wrong manager, the wrong coaching staff & the wrong players. One person to blame - Hessenthaler. One person to make change - Paul Scally.

Look at those stats, 13 shots on target on our goal at home, thats 13 to our 5. PATHETIC!

Hessenthaler - You won't get a golden ticket next Weekend, but one hell of a thrashing!

WE NEED CHANGE - DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THIS VICTORY - PROMOTION WILL NOT BE!
