AFC Wimbledon 3 Gillingham 1

Luke Rooney goes close for Gills at AFC Wimbledon

Gillingham conceded three first half goals and tasted defeat at the hands of AFC Wimbledon.

Andy Hessenthaler’s side conceded three goals in a nightmare 12 minute spell early in the first half and didn’t get back into the game until Charlie Lee struck with just over 20 minutes left.

The Gills were unable to add to their goal tally despite pressing well in the latter stages.

The visitors were a goal down after just 10 minutes when a long clearance from the back eluded the visiting defence and Christian Jolley was allowed a free run at goal. He finished well past keeper Ross Flitney.

The Gills conceded another just two minutes later and Jolley was the man doing the damage again, this time converting Sammy Hatton’s cross. Jolley squeezed in a header after beating Matt Fish to the ball.

Ten minutes later and the Gills found themselves three goals down as a mix-up at the back allowed Jack Midson to capitalise. Chris Whelpdale and Fish combined to allow Midson in and he stroked the ball home.

Gillingham had their first shot on target with 32 minutes gone when Whelpdale’s cross was chested down by Danny Jackman and he shot on the turn, but keeper Seb Brown comfortably held on.

The first half ended better than it began with the Gills putting the pressure on, helped by a change, after Curtis Weston was added to the midfield and Danny Jackman moved to left-back.

Goals failed to arrive at the start of the second half and it prompted a change from boss Andy Hessenthaler as he handed Jo Kuffour his debut with 30 minutes left.

It was Kedwell who had the best of the early second half chances but from Frank Nouble’s cross he headed wide.

With 67 minutes gone the Gills did get a goal back when Weston laid the ball off for Lee and he found the top corner with an exquisite finish.

As the Gills pressed for another they were exposed at the back and Flitney was forced to make a good low save to deny Jolley. That chance came moments after Rooney’s cross only just eluded Kuffour.

Chances were coming at both ends and home keeper Brown pulled off a double save to firstly deny Kedwell and then Kuffour.

Rooney had an effort go wide after taking on a number of defenders as the game really opened up late on. Jolley, though, was a real threat on the break for AFC.

Gillingham: Flitney, Frampton, Fish, Richards, Lawrence (Weston 37mins), Jackman, Lee (Montrose 86mins), Whelpdale (Kuffour 59mins), Rooney, Kedwell, Nouble. Subs not used: Gazzaniga, S Payne.

AFC Wimbledon: Brown, Hatton, Gwillim (Johnson 5mins), S Moore, L Moore (Mulley 30mins), Stuart, McNaughton, Minshull (Porter 78mins), Yussuff, Midson, Jolley. Subs not used: Turner, Kiernan.

Attendance: 4,606

WOW. The Hessy apologists are getting so desperate. To accuse those of us who want a change of manager of being non Gills supporters is a clear sign that they know he is on borrowed time. They have run out of excuses for this clueless joker who thinks he has a divine right to be manager. His record is appalling just like his teams football and discipline.

Some of you lot posting on here are an absolute DISGRACE at best. Supporting my local team is an absolute pleasure and a dream for me. A lot of you lot sound like armchair Liverpool fans. Why don't you just p*ss off down the pub and watch your team beat Wigan 5-0.

Last week after a good win, not a bad word was said about Hess. Today, he's the devil in a tracksuit. Get real. Who do you think we are? Real Madrid of the 60s? or perhaps Ajax Amsterdam of the 70s? Or what about AC Milan of the 80s? Not even these great teams won every week. WE CAN'T WIN EVERY SATURDAY. When will you understand this? You are making t*ts of yourselves with your ridiculous comments. I bet most of you have never played the game before.

We've got some good players and we're in the mix at the right end of the table. Some of the teams above us don't have better players or managers than us. Give it time, support the club (Hess included) and most importantly, TRY TO ENJOY LIFE.

Here I am Steve, I have better things to do than troll on message boards reading rubbish written by people who nothing about the game or pretending to be Gills fans. Yes we lost and played poorly first half. Hess set up he side badly, frampton as good as he is, is no left back and once he realised this we looked a better side and more balanced. Problem was the game was lost. Looked much better 2nd half pretty much how we have sonvr Nouble joined.

But what does it matter what me and others who understand the game say, the negative, know nothing fans and trolls will shout louder. The club does have a rotten failing element, the unrealistic fans. Not a Hess apologist, merely a realist who expects a top 7 finish come the end of the season rather than 1 October.

We don't need to replace the players, we just need to replace a clueless, useless manager.A better manager can still achieve a top 3 finish.Keep the present one and the rest of this season will result in awful football, dwindling attendances and 2nd division football next season.

@ elseyrocket I see your point but the uprisal that will be created sacking him and then trying to find a new one won't help the players. And there aren't loads of brilliant managers available that we would be able to afford. If anything I feel we could do with another coach from outside which can give the manager his impetus like what Mark Robson did when he was with us.

If I was Scally I would wait until around november time at least before giving him the boot. But call me a fool but I have the belief that Hess is still the man to take us forward.

Wow you're already on the "Hess Out" Bandwagon again. The last two games we scored nine goals and we signed Nouble and Kuffour. Most of you praised Hess for these signings and now have already turned as we lost to a team who are punching well above their weight in this league and are suceeding.

Hess saw tjat a change was needed and he brought on Weston for Lawrence which was a player who sounded hungry and threatening for the ball today and we didnt concede again and we made the chances.

True supporters stay behind their team and dont call for the managers head once we have lost a match.

    Up The Gills!

Mr Scally i do not believe you are serious about a top 3 finish. You are making the same mistakes you made with Stimson, continually backing a useless manager.DON'T LEAVE IT TO LATE THIS TIME SCALLY.

hess's time must surely be running out - last season he blamed the world and his mother when for everyting, he has tried to rebuild the squad in the summer and managed to make a pigs ear of that, by over spending in certain areas, leaving us short in others, so showed you should not trust him with your money (someone have a read of his sports club's website that reads as if it has been written by a nine year old), we are still one of the least fit teams in the league, still cannot string more then two or three passes together, still have no shape, still come ou tin the first half the poorer side and still play the wrost football priestfield has seen in over 20 years.

Now, there can be no excuses, the bucks tops with him. If the players are getting it wrong, week in, week out, and it is not hess's fault, then he has to put his hands up and admit he has signed poor players. If not, then the fault must lie with him.

If the rumours about Lee being unsettled and questioning the manager are ture, it will not be long before this all implodes and Hess goes, one way or the other. Once a manager loses the dressing room, you either bing in a whole new team in November (deja vu Stimmo) or change the Manager.

Losing I can take, but being constantly outplayed, and looking like a pub side, is not something any of us should be expected to put up with.
