Gillingham returned to winning ways in style after hitting five past Torquay.

A first half double from Jo Kuffour was cancelled out inside the opening six minutes of the second half as Torquay stormed back into the match.

A Luke Rooney penalty restored Gillingham’s lead before the hour and he set up the fourth for Frank Nouble.

Chris Whelpdale wrapped things up with a stunning fifth as he lobbed the keeper from the edge of the area in the final minute.

Gillingham took just six minutes to go ahead when Matt Lawrence’s header was taken down by Kuffour on his chest, leaving the defence flat-footed, and enabling him to drive the ball into the bottom corner.

Torquay had plenty of the ball in the opening half, but their best efforts came from distance, with both Lee Mansell and Billy Bodin being denied by saves from Gills keeper Ross Flitney.

Bodin, on loan from Swindon, looked a threat in the opening 45 minutes but the Gills managed to keep a clean sheet until the break.

The home side did have the ball in the back of the net just after the half hour, through Taiwo Atieno, but he was adjudged to be offside after getting to the ball first after Flitney had parried a shot from Danny Stevens.

Torquay’s hopes of getting back in the game faded when a Gillingham set-piece led to Kuffour netting his second against a side where he spent four seasons between 2002 and 2006.

Martin had laid a free-kick back to Luke Rooney and his inviting cross was whipped in behind the defence and Kuffour only had to tap home at the far post.

Only a goal-line clearance from Torquay defender Brian Saah prevented Rooney from adding a third before the break.

Just two minutes into the second half Torquay pulled a goal back when Eunan O’Kane’s corner was headed home by Chris Robertson.

With 51 minutes on the clock Gills’ lead was wiped out when Stevens ran in on goal and swept a shot past Flitney. It took the Gills just four minutes to regain the advantage.

Kuffour was pulled down in the box by O’Kane and Rooney stepped up to convert the penalty. It was Gillingham’s sixth penalty of the season and the fifth to have been converted.

A fourth goal for the Gills arrived on 78 minutes when Rooney cut out Kevin Nicholson’s cross and ran almost the full length of the pitch before picking out Nouble who drilled a shot into the bottom corner.

That goal knocked the stuffing out of Torquay and the Gills hit a fifth in the final minute when Whelpdale picked up the ball on the corner of the area and sent it flying over keeper Bobby Olejnik and into the far corner.

Gills: Flitney, Fish, Martin, Lawrence, Richards, Montrose, Whelpdale (Evans 90mins), Weston, Rooney, Nouble, Kuffour (S Payne 86mins). Subs: Davies, Essam, Gazzaniga.

Torquay: Olejnik, Oastler, Nicholson, Robertson, Saah, Mansell, O’Kane, Bodin, Stevens, Howe, Atieno (Halpin 75mins). Subs: Ellis, Rice, McPhee, Lathrope.

Attendance: 2,582

What do you think of Gillingham's comeback and the contribution of Jo Kuffour? WIll Danny Kedwell fit back into the side when he;s back from injury? Have your say below.

Thankfully we had Kedwell here at the donkey sanctuarey for the weekend which allowed players with flair and talant to perform.

Kedwell will never score in open play or produce football that we saw at Torquay.

    Sad but true.

Well done Gills. Listened on the radio to what seemed a thrilling game. So glad your heads didn't drop when Torquay drew level. Great support from those able to travel too, cheering the team on.

Was at the game yesterday and what an enjoyable match it was.To be fair the game was stretched from the start and both sides had loads of chances, Flitney did well in goal and Kuffour was a nightmare for the Gulls centre halves. Two up at ht and its game over isn't it ? Oh hang on this is Gills and we know what happens then, but instead of a total collapse the team regrouped and went on to score three more, two of which were worthy of being seen at any football ground.Good effort from all involved!

Totally agree with Old Gimmer ;) legend. Well done today lads, sounded like we deserved it. A couple of years ago we would struggle badly against any team away and now we can't stop scoring away. Funny how things turn out. Lets improve the home form too and we can keep creeping up the league!

    Up The Gills!

    ps where's the doubters now?

To be honest it's scary how many dribbling fools now have a platform to air their views on Gills with the advent of the internet.

Back in the day they could only proffer their myopic views to others face-to-face, others who wouldn't hesitate to point out their idiocy.

Now, provided they can correctly type their email address (not always a given), they get to inflict their rambling, pointless, barely coherent gibberish on those of us who actually listened at school, and can form cogent viewpoints.

I think your humour's a bit too subtle for some on here Gimmer!

We've played better than that and lost, but great to see the goals being spread out after last season becoming Cody and Bayo show once Palmer was injured.

It really does emphasise how inconsistent we are and, as much as I hate to agree with him, Dave's right that it needs to be followed up with another couple of results. Even when things haven't been going well, there's been a sense that a bit of momentum could do wonders for this team's confidence and paper over the deficiencies in the coaching.

I was at the game and it was totally entertaining, fair play to Torquay they pulled two good saves out of Flitney in the first half who did well to keep them out, dont miss Rooneys fantastic run and Noubles finish for the fourth and as for the fith ! ! ! mention must also go to Jo Kouffour non stop all afternoon and looked the person most likely to score also pulled down for Rooney`s penalty he might have even taken it himself for a "hat trick "against his former club,he deserved the fantastic applause he got when sustituted.Considering the ammount of injuries a good result to inflict Torquay`s biggest league defeat in five years. Well done Gills.

Hess out! Two goals conceded away from home; disgraceful.

Where's the assistant manager we desparately need? He would have got us fifteen goals today.

These new loanees just aren't up to scratch either, 3 of 5 goals? Awful. Send them back so we can sign the left-midfielder we so desperately need.

That away kit? Dreadful. Get a brown one so we can wear it with pride to prove how cack we really are.

460 mile round trip today? Disgusting, why don't we relocate to the Kent League so we don't have to travel sor far, we might just win a few games.

    Awful, terrible, dreadful, useless.
