Andy Hessenthaler proud of his team after Gillingham beat Oxford United 1-0 in League 2

Andy HessenthalerBy Luke Cawdell

Andy Hessenthaler was proud of his team’s performance after battling against the odds to take maximum points on Saturday.

The Gills played nearly half the game with 10 men and ended it with nine against an Oxford side that asked serious questions at the other end.

Gills boss Hessenthaler (pictured) was thrilled to see his team keep their opponents out and claim a second straight win to leave his side sitting fifth in League 2.

“They got a big pat on the back from me; I was proud of them,” he said.

“I am sure the fans will go home saying the players couldn’t have given any more. They were outstanding and they worked their socks off for the club.”

Hessenthaler admitted the dismissals of Joe Martin and Lewis Montrose, both for mistimed challenges, were warranted but refused to be over-critical of the pair.

“Joe’s first one (challenge) was silly,” said the Gills boss. “He was having a mad five minutes, he had switched off a few times and was letting balls go out of play. He ended up getting booked and that’s cost him.

“He says he got the ball (for the second challenge). I don’t know. When you are on a booking you have to be careful and I would like to see it again.”

Montrose was sent off with 88 minutes gone - having got through plenty of work in the match for the Gills.

“The kid has given everything in the second half and who am I to tell people not to make challenges?” said Hessenthaler.

“I was the worst. You only have to look at my disciplinary record. It is difficult for me to crucify the fella. It was a little bit of inexperience and it looked worse than it was perhaps.

“We will have to take that one and he will learn from it but I am not going to criticise him too much because the lad won us the game with the goal and his effort in midfield when we were down to 10 men was phenomenal.”

The Gills played most of the second half with Jo Kuffour as the lone striker in attack and Hessenthaler was delighted with the way the forward helped keep the ball in Oxford’s half.

He said: “We dropped off and let Kuffour do what he did to their back four on his own and he was outstanding. They couldn’t handle him. He was different class.

“He got the man-of-the-match, rightly so, although for me they all were, with the way they dug in as a group.”

Sounds you were a bit like Oxford when they beat Swindon earlier this season. Swindon totally outclassed them but the team being new gave it away. Come to SN1 on Tuesday and you will see a great team playing real football(no kick and run stuff). As for playing the ref, if only, very rarly see dives etc, do see a lot of hackers when the oppersition gets frustrated by how good Swindon are.

regardless of the performance, this game was very important. it's the first game since i cant remember when where the fans were completely behind the team. it was like the old days! if the fans manage to keep this up then the performances will look after themselves.

teams used to dread coming to priestfield because of the atmosphere that the fans created in it. its not the biggest stadium in the world, but when were in fine voice, it is very loud. home of the shouting men. UTG

boyogill I usually agree with your opinions but not on yesterdays game. We were terrible before anyone was sent off and made them look far better than they are.

Much is made of this unbeaten run but one look at the fixtures and you realise it's been pretty kind to them. Dagenham, Barnet, Accrington, Macclesfield and Hereford are all in the recent list of fixtures. Ok, you can only play what's in front of you but come on....Oxford aren't a top side in this division.

Yes I noticed Mr Ward was fairly local. I'm afraid I remember him from a couple of other Gills games he's officiated, and he wasn't great then either.

Oxford looked a good team and it was definitely a case of better team behind at the break. Having said that was a truly stunning strike by Montrose - has to be a contender for goal of the season.
Second half we battled superbly well considering we played virtually all of it a man down, and especially last few minutes when only nine left. Reminded me of old style Gills (win ugly but with one hell of a lot of battle) which was excellent to see. In the end well deserved win given the circumstances.
Referee was appalling - totally lost the plot and I will be letting him know that in person at work on Monday (good when you know the guy!).
Martin sending off probably warranted as a second yellow, but Montrose should not have gone, as moments before the guy he took out took out Fish in virtually identical fashion. Had Gavin stopped the play then as he should have the Montrose incident would never have happened. Not disputing in its own right was an awful challenge but fact is should never have got to that stage.
Overall very happy tonight with that result and performance and now looking forward to travelling to the WIBS on Tue. Remember your flippers and mittens if you want to blend in.

I dont expect to see gills play great football every week and admit performances have been below par but we are at the bottom tier of the football league and only a few points of where we want to be. We didn't play great but showed an awful lot of spirit to dig out three points against a good side, providing the players contribute as much as they did yesterday for the remainder of the season I will be pleased. Keep showing committed performances and the quality in the squad will eventually shine through....utg always keep believing xx

Do people expect Oxford (a top 3 side who have gone 8 unbeaten) to come here and not have any of the game!!? Especially with a man advantage for much of the game.

Of course they made chances, but we did too. Half these 'Hess apologists' are actually just fans who know he isn't the greatest manager in the world, but accept he's doing alright and things seem to be improving. The more people come on and moan immediately after a hard-fought win, the more people will defend Hess and the team...obviously.

It's far from perfect, and we shouldn't get carried away, but Christ credit where it's due!!

Montrose's sending off was totally justified. Whereas Martin's second yellow was debatable.
As far as "Well done" - if you think that Oxford will go back being happy about missing three open goals, let alone the other off target strikes you are sadly missing the point. We won the game against a better football playing side purely because their finishing was woeful.
