Morecambe 2 Gillingham 1

Frank Nouble steps up to score Gillingham's consolation from the penalty spot

Gillingham succumbed to a second straight League 2 defeat on Saturday.

A goal in each half from Morecambe was enough for the home side to take maximum points.

Clear goalscoring chances for the Gills were sparse on a tricky afternoon for Andy Hessenthaler’s side.

A penalty in the fourth minute of injury time, converted by Frank Nouble (pictured), was too little too late.

Gillingham, who started with an unchanged eleven, were aiming to bounce back from a 2-0 midweek defeat at Swindon.

Just one change was made to the matchday squad with Joe Martin returning from suspension and replacing Dean Rance on the Gills bench.

Gillingham went a goal behind after just eight minutes through midfielder Garry Hunter. He struck from 20 yards with a shot the looped over keeper Ross Flitney and bounced in off the underside of the bar.

The Gills had been off the pace in the opening stages but came alive in the latter stages of the half, with Luke Rooney coming close, shooting a low shot into the arms of goalkeeper Barry Roche. Rooney and Whelpdale had also put efforts wide of the post.

With no change to the score by the hour mark the Gills introduced leading scorer Danny Kedwell off the bench, joining Jo Kuffour and Nouble in attack.

The home side doubled their lead on 68 minutes when Matt Fish was beaten by wide-man Izak Reid. His pass found Kevin Ellison and the substitute striker guided the ball in low past keeper Flitney.

Gillingham were creating chances down the right flank with Nouble but were unable to get someone on the end of one of his crosses.

A clear sight at goal continued to elude the Gills and Chris Whelpdale had to try his luck from distance late on but keeper Roche was equal to it.

In second half injury time the Gills pulled a goal back after Roche fouled Kuffour and Nouble tucked the penalty away.

Gillingham: Flitney, Fish, Jackman, Richards, Lawrence, Lee, Weston (Kedwell 58mins), Whelpdale, Rooney (S Payne 79mins), Nouble, Kuffour. Subs: Frampton, Martin, Gazzaniga

Morecambe: Roche, Haining (Charnock 29mins), Wilson (Reid 49mins), McReady, Parrish, Drummond, McDonald, Hunter, Carlton, Alessandra, Price (Ellison 62mins). Subs: Routledge, Flemming.

Attendance: 2,067

Such a shame that this KM website has been spoiled by a group of people who seem determined to bang on with the same old mantra no matter what happens on (or off) the field.

In conclusion I suggest that within a very short time this site will only have the same small group of people talking to each other every day. Enjoy!

So the anti-Hessenthaler idiots aren't happy when they get referred to as a Dover supporter or a `plastic` fan everytime they are negative, but you are so narrow-minded to refer to somebody who supports the club as an alias for Paul Scally?

If you had a fully functioning brain, I'd say you were out of your mind.

BTW Bill is spot on about the childish, mindless nonsense on here. Frankly those who try to enter into reasoned debate are abused and labelled "apologists" because they don't agree with those WHO SHOUT THE LOUDEST. Gills365 has posters from the pro and anti Hess camp who can debate issues without resorting to childish abuse.

Hess must be counting his luck at the moment as the Gills are still only 1 point out of the play off places despite being beaten twice in a week and generaly unconvincing all season.Unfortunately the flip side of this is if they were half decent they could be pace setters and on paper have a team that looks good eneough to do so with two noteable exceptions Gary Richards and Matt Fish are playing above their level and that is two too many in a back four the manager needs to be bold and make the changes required now maybe Simon King should get his chance he put in good performances at Plymouth which coincided with a slight upturn in their fortunes the injury he sustained was not related to his original problem that kept him out for so long, at some point you have to gamble on him, when he was in the side he was the best central defender in that division which was league one.The expectations were high at the begining of this season and a lot of games have now been played and the performance levels are not good eneough.Dont knock the chairman he got Hess the players HE wanted and by the managers admition he was pleased with the players and squad that he had assembled he either needs to get more out of the existing with a more motivational management style which somehow seems lacking or he should have a rethink on some of the personnel.
