Gillingham 1 Barnet 3

Gillingham failed to take advantage of their first half dominance and paid the price in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy second round match.

The Gills were ahead inside five minutes through Garry Richards but Barnet hit back with a goal in each half to take the lead.

Barnet had the chance to add a third from the penalty spot but Izale McLeod blasted over – only to score from open play to seal the win moments later.

Gillingham had dominated the opening half but went into the break with the scores level at 1-1.

Richards had put the home side ahead with just five minutes on the clock when he got on the end of Luke Rooney’s cross, from a free-kick, and guided the ball home.

The lead lasted just six minutes when Izale McLeod scored from the spot. Referee Graham Scott appeared to have penalised Andy Frampton for a tug on the shirt of Barnet’s Clovis Kamdjo.

Argentine keeper Paulo Gazzaniga was unable to stop the penalty on his home debut as McLeod rifled home into the roof of the net. It was his sixth goal against the Gills in the last three games between the sides.

From then until the break, apart from brief Barnet forays forward, the game was dominated by the Gills’ attack.

Jo Kuffour was making his home debut and first start alongside Stefan Payne in attack. It was only Payne’s second start of his Gills career and first this season.

Frank Nouble and Luke Rooney were supplying the ammunition from the wings and all of the forwards came close to scoring.

Rooney was a constant menace to the Barnet defence and the visitors, and their 49 fans, were grateful to keeper Liam O’Brien for denying the livewire winger from netting in the opening 45 minutes.

Nouble was also threatening on the right flank but despite the shot count moving into double figures by half-time the score remained 1-1.

Kuffour had seen a shot blocked, Rooney shot one straight at the keeper and had another knocked wide, while Payne had a header saved and the follow-up blocked. Weston struck a couple wide and Nouble was unable to beat the keeper.

There were less clear-cut chances at the start of the second half with Payne seeing a glancing header fall to O’Brien and at the other end Sam Deering blasted an effort into the empty Town End.

Just past the hour mark right-back Matt Fish fired wide for the Gills from around 40 yards and moments later Payne flashed a long range effort over the bar.

Gillingham had made an enforced substitution when Fish went off injured and within a minute Mark Marshall, who had been kept quiet all night, burst into the area and drove a low shot across Gazzaniga and into the net on 72 minutes.

Barnet could have put the game beyond the Gills as Gazzaniga pulled McLeod down in the box, after the striker was clear on goal after a mistake at the back by Richards. This time the striker blasted his penalty well over the bar.

Mistakes were creeping in for the Gills and McLeod made amends with six minutes left as an exquisite ball from Deering found McLeod and he tapped home to make it 3-1.

Gills: Gazzaniga, Fish (Whelpdale 71mins), Jackman, Frampton (Davies 78mins), Richards, Montrose, Weston, Rooney, S Payne, Nouble, Kuffour (Kedwell 83mins). Subs not used: Flitney, Oli.

Barnet: O’Brien, Kamdjo, Uddin, Leach, Borrowdale, Byrne, Hughes, Marshall, Deering (Vilhete 89mins), Taylor (Owusu 86mins), McLeod (Kabba 85mins). Subs not used: Brill, Cox.

Attendance: 1,278

But we can't blame Hess for the tactic because the player aren't playing by them. Hess every game at home this season has been shouting to the boys from pitch side but guess what the player don't listen. Ian Hendon used to order them about and that's why he was so good because if you didn't do what he wanted you to do he would shout at you. Hess does do this but they just don't pay any attention. The thing we need is good discipline and that my friend will give us results.

harry p - my point is that people seem more to support hess than the club. i support gfc. not hess. i dont give a stuff who the manager is as long as his team is organised, fit, play to a plan, have width, have a plan b - everything hess hasn't delivered on.

yes we are in the top half. noone in this league has millions bar crawley, so that's irrelevant.

the point is this - the football is appalling. no organisation. no tactics. no scouting - see wimbledon game, 6'3" centre back against quick little winger. no width. 9 man burton had more width than us. if scally has his eye back on the ball, like he said at the beginning of the season, there is 1 obvious course of action. hess must go. get in peter taylor & steve butler.

what a silly thing to say. are you supporting Gills or Hess. He is the manager of Gills so its both. Wouldnt say he is doing a great job, but its not a bad one either. Are we bottom or 5 points off top? we are in a better place than this time last year. I wonder why some people watch the gills, we dont have millions to spend and never will. if people dont like it go and watch Man U or Chelsea. Although bet people would still moan.

You're right to say that Hess inherited a good squad from Taylor/Pulis, but J Brown, Banks, Hope, Osborn, Shaw, M King, Agyemang, Henderson, Sidibe...all pretty decent signings, not to mention bringing through Nosworthy, Jarvis and Spiller. I don't think Hess ever really gets enough credit for the 4 years in the Championship.

That said, his abilty to spot a good player isn't really the issue. It's getting the best out of those good players. That's where it went wrong last time and where it is going wrong this time. I'd say most of us were pretty optimistic at the start of the season, which implies that this squad should be more than good enough. Why they aren't doing it I'm not sure but of course the buck stops with the manager.

Why an assistant manager still hasn't been found is beyond me, when in the last fortnight we've added 3 players to a squad of 30. In my opinion it started to go wrong the day Mark Robson left.

Like a few others commenting on these boards I have supported the Gills for over 50 years. Truly cannot say that all times have been great and records will prove that we have never been a big club either in terms of league placing or for attracting quality players.

More recent seasons posts have focussed on our "non-league" players stepping up and not being good enough. So are we not buying the right players? How come season after season the Conference promoted non league teams come into the division and carry all before them with their crop of non leaguers!

One thing I am sure about is none of the players come on board here or anywhere else with a view of underperforming. Give the guys a break and stop getting on their backs all the time. My guess is that most of the posts are made by guys and girls with no previous professional playing experience. Yeah we can all be managers from the comfort of our armchairs. Its not the same in real life just as work isnt always how we want it to be, for those that work anyway.

By the way I never thought Mr H would return as manager. He was lucky last time with a successful squad, inherited not his own. And sad as it is to say it, please go now Andy and hopefully someone with experience wanting a short term role until season end can step into the breach.

    Forever UP THE GILLS!

It's not a good feeling to leave the ground after a result like that but there were some positives. The 4-3-3 worked well, Stephan Payne had a good game, Nouble was excellent and Rooney always looks dangerous. I feel sorry for Jackman, he can cover at left back but it's not where he should be playing.

Something happens when Gills go behind, they seem to panic and reveret to lumping the ball up front in the hope that it may find someone. Perhaps it's fear or perhaps it's reading some of the negative, personal and insulting comments posted here. On paper it's a very competative squad. The team are 9th in the league and only a point off the play offs. A good win against PV at the weekend is needed to inspire confidence, put the Gills back in promotion contention and silence some of the doom mongers. The glass more than half full.

Please go to Charlton and don't bother coming back - we don't want you fairweather fans.
And as for SteveG - what on earth were you watching? Stefan Payne was superb first half and although went off boil in 2nd half still worked hard. To suggest Oli works harder is frankly ludicrous!
As for the game tonight we totally dominated 1st half and were it not for a baffling penalty decision we would have been ahead at the break. In fact we deserved to be 2 or 3 up at the interval.
Admittedly dropped our game badly 2nd half but in all honesty over the whole 90mins I would say the better team lost.
Yes there were bad points (and I don't just mean the appalling referee). One in particular was Richards who outdid himself tonight with three absolute howlers (even more than usual). In fact going forward think Howler should be his new nickname. Every bl**dy game!
Overall although not great have seen far worse and not troubled by tonight. Disappointed yes, but not troubled.

A really inadaquate performance again and after the shocker on Saturday(first half) we don't seem to have any plan apart from the big boot,or pass backwards.
Barnet were positive in everything they did, they jumped at us and stopped us running at them, they got in our face all the time and deserved this win as they did last time when we lost 2-4 - the score tonight could have been a lot worse apart from some fine saves by our young Argentian.
Barnet must love playing us -we are so predictable - we didn't even have the nouse to put someone onto Izale MacLeod,a class act who just loves smacking in the goals against us and he will run up a hat trick every time with the way we play him.
How do other teams control him so well and we can't - come on Hess you aren't stupid you must see that we are not playing the opposition in the right way - do you do any homework on the opposition?? - Wimbledon was another game we should have won but we let them score three times before we started to play.
Lawrie Sanchez had this game sorted down to a tee and we were pathetic again in the second half - again silly defensive mistakes by Whelpdale and Richards when will they start to show what they can do
    - Whelpdale has been a big dissappointment since he has signed for us - not the same player who we took on loan from Peterborough that's for sure and Montrose and most of the midfield tonight didn't run back to help the defence (Like the Barnet lads did) also Rooney a good forward going forward but he needs to learn to defend as well to become the complete article.
A really poor second half and overall a poor performance with too many players under performing - it is now up to the manager to get them motivated for Saturday and to play properly for once for the whole game(Just do what Barnet did).
I've supported this team for 60 years and i am at a loss to understand why we are always chasing the game and not dictating it - especially at home.
I won't be making the game Saturday due to family committments - i would usually be upset by this - but as we are playing at mo i am looking forward to not going and having a break from going every week.
I hope the manager has a plan B ready for Port Vale and Richards their hot shot forward
    - let me just say put someone on him and stop him performing
and for goodness sake get the whole team putting in the effort
    going forward and defending.

you are only highlighting the end of their current careers not the high points they have had, and also only focused on a few also, look at what Mike Newell did, great manager!

You can't judge managers on just one club, look at them as a whole, look at Peter Taylor, great manager for us and quite a few other clubs, but also terrible at a few, doesn't make him a bad manager, so don't go judging some of the candidates on the result of one team, but in that list there were quite a few good managers with a good records at quite a few clubs.

If you want to find a manager with a perfect manager, there aren't any! Every manager has good times at clubs and bad times at clubs! All those managers are better than Hessy, more experience of the leagues, quite a few of them managed at a higher level for longer and also majority of them havent spent nearly 10 years out of league football!

So be realistic, these managers are all perfectly good replacements, some better than others, i personally would like Mike Newell, or Mark Robins even Paul Ince has a good record at league 2 level.

I have to single out Stefan Payne this evening as he seemed totally disinterested and strolled around the field and put no effort into winning the ball whatsoever, I have watched the gills for more than 40 years and that has to be one of the worst performances from an individual and as a team they were not much better. I hate to say it but no progression for 40 years and any young kid asked my advice I would say go support Charlton at least there is some possibilty of progression. TURNED OVER BY BARNET AT HOME FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW!

Pathetic Hessenthaler, totally pathetic! Yet another cup match & yet another defeat. You’ve lost EVERY single cup match since you’ve been back at the football club. I hope you quit tonight because you’re going to defiantly be gone by the end of the Month anyway. You should quit now instead of wasting the rest of the Month. You are useless! Barnet were better than us in EVERY position tonight. Yet again we were second best. There’s no more excuses, we’ve heard them all, we are sick of them all. This is the team that you’ve built, it’s nowhere near good enough & so you must go.

Barnet have got half the budget that we’ve got & they’ve got much better players than us due to your inability Hessenthaler to sign quality low cost players. Even Mark Stimson managed to sign decent players for Barnet at this level, he made that team. Tonight you saw what a quality strike force at this level is like. Our so called strikers aren’t a patch on the ones that Barnet have. We never looked in the match tonight & the same came be said for 12 of the 13 matches so far this season, we’ve been pathetic. You’ve let the supporters down time & time again over the past 2 seasons.

We’ve got a home match against Port Vale on Saturday & you shouldn’t be in charge for it. You’ve been given enough time; you’ve proved to be not up to the job. The signings that you’ve made have turned out to be awful. Your home record with Gillingham is dreadful & your away record isn’t the best either. A Ryman Premier League side wouldn’t sign half of the players you’ve signed if they could afford them. Mark Stimson IS a better manager than you – That’s all that needs to be said for you. Remember that Mark Stimson got this club promoted from League Two in the first season & also had far superior cup records to what you’ve had in charge over the past two seasons. Scally made a MASSIVE mistake putting you in charge for two seasons.

You shouldn’t be allowed to have this season in charge of the club after you failed to even make the Play Offs with double of the budget last season. You even lost at home to Dover Athletic last season in the FA Cup Round One & that in itself is well worthy of a sacking. At any other Football League club you wouldn’t still be in charge, you’d only last a couple of Months. It’s only due to your friendship with the chairman that your in charge as manager of the first team. This football club is going no where this season. I told everyone this before the start of the season, no one would believe it & I told them all straight before last season started as well. It IS a 16th placed finish at best for this club this season & if you like it or not it’s up to you but that’s a FACT!

Quit tonight Hessenthaler before you’re sacked at the end of the Month. 100% you won’t be in charge of this football club come November 2011. BIG matches coming up this Month & you ALWAYS fail in the BIG matches. You NEVER beat the top teams; you ALWAYS get beaten by them. You should’ve been sacked in October 2010, so it’s a Year too late, but this time you’ll finally be going. At least it’ll be the back of you, but we’ll be stuck with your Dog & Duck players for the next few Years as you’ve given them long term contracts you fool! The Ryman League Premier IS your management level, so get back down to it where you belong! QUIT NOW!!!

the same old story this season as last season under hess - no shape, no football, zero discipline, unmotivated players, poor fitness levels and plenty of posession but unable to do anything with it - he has managed to take our excellent home form and wreck it, and build a side whose passing is worse than most pub teams - we are quite frankly embarrasing to watch at the moment, with a manager who is even more embarrasing to listen to when he does his interviews - way, way out of his depth which is obvious to anyone but him! those who said he broke our away duck last season should remember that we had dropped to league two, where Stimson won MORE matches both home AND away than Hessenthler, so hardly an achievement.

The stats are simple - we need to win over 50% of our remaining games to get an automatic promotion spot - should we really always have to be satisfied with second best? if the season ended now, we aren't even in the play-offs. can people honestly see Hessenthaler suddenly, overnight, turing things around? Overnight, working out how to pass the ball, work as a team, kill opponents off, be disciplined and out think the opposition tacitcally? two chances - slim and none, and slim just walked out the door.

    time to go Hessenthaler.

Yup, time to go Hess. You really haven't got a clue. We need to change the (lack of) direction before it's too late Scally.
