Andy Hessenthaler was pleased by Gillingham's performance in 1-1 League 2 draw with Port Vale

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler issues instructions to Danny Kedwell.by Luke Cawdell

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler was pleased with his team’s performance despite being held on home soil by Port Vale.

The Gills bossed much of Saturday's game but in the end needed a penalty to claim a League 2 point.

Hessenthaler (pictured instructing Danny Kedwell) said: “The players are a bit disappointed but I’m not and I can sleep quite easily after that performance. On another day we would have won the game.

“We didn’t win it but I was pleased with the boys as they kept going. We got a little bit of fortunate with the retake of the penalty and I think we earned that luck because we haven’t had that over the last few games, especially in front of goal.”

Hessenthaler’s only gripe was the lack of finishing and a sloppy moment at the back which led to Vale’s first half opener.

He said: “I would hate to see the stats again because I think that’s three games now, second half at Wimbledon, against Barnet in the JPT, and now this one where we have dominated but we haven’t punished teams.

“You have to give Port Vale credit because they make it very difficult and they are strong, they defend for their lives, but I couldn’t have asked for any more from my players. I thought they were terrific.”

Marc Richards had given Vale a 33rd minute lead.

“(They scored from a) diagonal ball, which we told the players about, and that’s disappointing,” said the Gills boss.

“We worked on the way they play. They get the ball in and look for Tom Pope and he is very good in the air. Matt Fish was out-muscled a little bit and then we switched off with the knock down. We were too deep in that instance really, but we could have also stopped the ball from going in there quicker.

“That was us switching off, as normal, which is disappointing.

“We were pretty flat after going in at half-time 1-0 down, because we have dominated the game, but not scored. We told the players to keep their heads up and they did.

“They started well and in the end got the penalty. We should have really gone on from there but I thought we dropped off them a little bit and we weren’t doing the things we were doing (before).

“Over the course of the game I was delighted with the performance and I just told them to keep doing what they are doing, because this could be the start of a decent run, if we believe in ourselves.”

Were you as pleased with the Gills performance as Andy Hessenthaler was? Have your say below.

We all know that Gills haven't been playing the best football for the last couple of seasons, but by getting behind the team we can make a difference to our team and the opposition, unerve the opposition to make mistakes, to not want the ball and to make it more enjoyable for fans to get people coming back to improve attendances. Let's make Priestfield a place to be feared.....

Paul I agree I think Saturday was very positive in our style of play, we kept the ball on the deck and looked alot better for it. As I said previously if we can play like we did Saturday week in week out on a consistant basis we will cruise this division no doubt.

As for the no atmosphere I still maintain that has been dead for a good few seasons now way before Hess's reign, in fairness we haven't had an awful lot to sing about over the past few seasons but we are very far from the fortress Priestfield that it used to be. I'm sure I saw tumble weed blowing around the RE on Saturday!

I could go on and on about so many tactical shortcomings. If he just plays 4-4-2 with wide players huggingthe flanks we'd be winning far more than we're losing.

As for the singing, dont gloss over the relevance. It was sung with gusto early on in the season, now nothing. Tells you something.

For me the disappointment is that we all know e should be doing so much better with the players at our disposal.

It's not just Hessentaler's Barmy Army that isn't being sung - there is no singing at all at Priestfield anymore and hasn't been for a number of season's that's before Hess's 2nd reign. We could be winning 5-0 at the mo and I think we'd be hard pushed to get an atmosphere going. It's like a library. Alot of damage has been done to this club and fans over the years and I believe that sacking Hess at this precise moment in the season is not the answer to fix our problems.

One nice little acid test - the 'Hessenthalers Barmy Army' chant was regularly well sung at the beginning of the season. On Saturday some soul started it ONCE and about 10 people joined in. That tells me that the majority are losing patience. You only have to watch the clueless tactics we employ to understand why.

I have no personal issues with Hess, as a player, one of the best ever to pull on a blue shirt.

As a manager, has been found to be sadly lacking. Twice.

I would be stunned if PDP sacked him, what he does need then is some help. An experienced head to give him advice.

What we have been crying out for is width. Now Nouble kind of supplied that on Saturday, but any fool could see that PV were a big one dimensional side. And we persisted with 4-3-3 when it was crying out to go 4-4-2.

When Kuffour came into the centre he ran rings round the 2 big lumps they had at centre back. But what does Hess do? Puts Payne on for Kuffour & keeps the same shape!

Much much earlier, once Lee had come off, the midfield 4 should have been: Nouble - Weston - Whelpdale - Rooney, and up top Kedwell and Kuffour. And then tell the 2 wide boys to stay wide, & lets spread the play. Yes we had to make do, but this made more sense than Hess panicked substitutions.

He needs to sit up in the stands & see for himself that the total lack of width is killing us. Burton with 9 men had more width than us.

With players out injured, we have the quality (in this terrible league) to be a top 3 side. But Hess needs to stop trying to play everything through the middle. If he just did this one thing, I am convinced it would make a worl of difference.

Both Penalties taken by Kedwell were of a poor standard and Kedwell was lucky to be given a second chance by the ref and Hessy. Martin and Lee looked quality, Rooney has abilty but his positional play is dreadful, clearly suffering from lack of quality coaching. I hope the Gills can kick on, we have the players to be in the top 5 but clearly not delivering yet. Thought yesterday was an improvement overall but still a lot of work to be done. We ended up getting a well deserved point and probably deserved all three.
Having Joe Martin back made a massive difference at the back, as not only did it sort out the recent left-back crisis but also seemed to steady the defence as a whole, with Richards finally at long last having a decent display without dropping any of his trademark clangers, and Lawrence looking good again after his one-off blip against Wimbledon.
Nouble continues to look good on the right flank and just hope we can extend his loan beyond next Saturday, whilst Kuffour showed glimpses of what he is capable of and that will surely get even better as fitness improves.
Overall reasonably satisfied albeit not overjoyed with performance. Further improvement needed but a step in the right direction.

Do not be fooled by the comments of the "manager". This is a manager who's only qualification for the job is that he's a great friend of the chairman. No other Football League club apart from Barnet would give this boy a job. We the supporters pay very decent money to watch the team play, it's not just the ticket costs it's also food & travel costs too as well as merchandise. The football play doesn't match the high prices of the match tickets. Yes we're in the 4th division, but our ticket prices are sky high.

Watching Gillingham play under Andy Hessenthaler IS very depressing. This is a "manager" with no tatics what so ever, one with a far worse record than of Mark Stimson's here. This is a person that shouldn't be in the job & one whom should've been sacked a Year ago now. It is disgusting that he is still in charge. However come the start of the next Month (November) he isn't going to be in charge anymore. This so called manager WILL be going this Month.

We're already a good stretch back behind the leaders, yes the places that the chairman said they wanted to be. We won't finish in the top half of the table this season & YES it IS the fault of Andy Hessenthaler for that for he spent our BIG budget last season & failed to even make the Play Offs. He should've gone last October when we lost at home to Dover Athletic in the FA Cup, & then he should've gone at the end of last season after we failed to even make the Play Offs.

This manager is out of date, out of fashion, he's got no record to speak of at this level, his football isn't football, he doesn't have the contacts & has wasted ALL of the clubs funds. Do not believe that he can turn things around, he couldn't turn a screw. The results & figures are there in black & white, this "manager" isn't the one for the position.

For the chairman to come out & state before the start of the season that "THIS IS OUR BEST SQUAD EVER" is truely a joke & aimed at trying to get season ticket sale figures through the system. This is no where near our best squad ever, you'd have to be a blind person to believe the chairmans words even before the start of the season, now you'd have to live within another solair system to believe them.

I'm looking forward to next Month when this so called "manager" will be out of the door. We'll be stuck with drose on 3 Year contracts due to the fool thats signed them. Hessenthaler, we just want to see the back of you, we are sick of you, we need change, that change is LONG OVERDUE! You've proved not up to the job. We've spent lots & lots of money watching your poor teams & management at every match. Nothing you do will ever be good enough. You can't beat a decent team at this level & this is the 4th division. Get back to the Ryman Leagues where you belong for the next 5 Years & learn you trade.

Step forward Peter Taylor & Iffy Onoura for you're the people whom should now be in charge until the end of the season to clean up the mess that the boy has put us within. There's plenty of decent managers out there that would come to Gillingham, so do not be put off by any thoughts of otherwise. If Accrington Stanley can have a decent manager then so can we.

These morons would clap and cheer wildly if we lost 9-0 at home and got relegated to the conference.

I support the team, but I am also a realist.

And the reality is, we have a poor manager, with no tactical knowledge and who doesnt know how what to do to change things.

We also have a non-league striker as our main goal threat, the fact is, if he was up to league standard, he would have played in the league long before hitting his late 20's.

Crowds are dwindling, the prices are too high for the division we are in, and all the time we are being served poor results, attendances will continue to drop.

All that matters is results. And if they arent up to scratch (which they arent), scally should sack the manager before it is too late to remedy the problems.

If you just want pretty football, then why indeed don't you just stay at home and watch Match of the Day?

As for Flitney, I'm still not convinced but as a cash-strapped League Two team, we're not about to sign Iker Casillas are we? It could beworse - he could be Kelvin Jack.
The Fact is that while there are areas that could do with improving (winning the 2nd ball, organisation at the back and being that bit more clinical in forward areas), we have talented players and are in a position were a half decent run could see us move much further towards the area of the table where we'd all like to be - and this is much more likely ifthe 'supporters' actually get behind the team rather than constantly whinging.

Now as for today's performance it had a lot of positives and good football played, if we carry on performing like today this season will go well.

If the manager was please with this then some of the comments from the Rainham end should be printed in the KM. We do have some very good players but The Gills Manager is running out of ideas and becoming clueless. where do we go from here and will Hess be manager come the end of January.

This is a "manager" whom won't be in the job anymore come November 2011.

Hessenthaler to become Barnet manager in January 2012.

October 2010 - That's when Hessenthaler should've been sacked, it'll be a whole Year too late!

Kuffour ran rings round their centre backs when he played up front. But the clown continues to play 4-3-3. And then he takes Kuffour off and puts Bambi Payne on in exactly the same place. A player with nowhere near the talent of Kuffour. Then he puts Oli and Payne up front. He might as well put my parents up front. And Kedwell is in midfield. Utterly utterly clueless. Please get rid of him PDP.

I don't know what game you were at but in terms of Football there was some good stuff played today by both sides and a fair result.Yes we can do better but there was more flair about the play we miss players like Jack Payne, Barry Fuller and Jackman(who have been in good form up to his injury.)
Joe Martin deserved Man of the match he was outstanding.Joe Kuffour will get fitter he showed some nice touches as did Nouble who will need to be replaced if he return to West Ham. Maybe by a tall quick winger.
