Gillingham silenced their critics with an emphatic away display at Hereford in League 2 on Saturday.

Five different players scored for the Gills, while Hereford also missed a second-half display to cap a miserable afternoon for the hosts.

Debutant Frank Nouble set the Gills on their way, holding off his marker before firing low beyond keeper Dave Cornell on 19 minutes.

It was 2-0 just five minutes later when Garry Richards’ looping header from Danny Jackman’s cross found the net.

Gills, who recovered from a shaky start, looked in total control with Danny Kedwell and Nouble combining well in a 4-4-2 formation.

But it was in the centre of midfield where they were most dominant with Jackman and Charlie Lee impressing.

Luke Rooney also proved a nuisance for the home defence and his persistence was rewarded five minutes before half-time when Joe Heath turned his cross into his own net for the third.

Any hopes of a Hereford fightback ended three minutes into the second half when Jackman collected Rooney’s short corner and promptly curled home from the edge of the area with his right-foot.

Danny Kedwell went close to his first Gills goal from open play but his contribution to the game should not be under-estimated as he led the line well alongside Nouble.

Hereford missed the chance to pull one back just after the hour when Rob Purdie hit a penalty against the crossbar.

Chris Whelpdale’s low drive left Cornell red-faced as it bobbled over his dive to make it 5-0 on 79 minutes and substitute Stefan Payne got in on the act with his first senior goal, a smart 20-yard finish for the sixth goal four minutes later.

Hereford pulled one back when Sam Winnall curled in a free-kick late on but it was all about the Gills and their impressive return to form.

Nonsense, Kedwell was signed at considerable expense as a striker.
    Strikers score goals!
Two penalties hardly amount to a great return on a hefty financial outlay.
That said, he would operate better in a front three when support was closer at hand.

jim white - you are very harsh on danny kedwell. he has done brilliantly well so far and he does a lot of work off of the ball. if he wasnt playing against hereford we wouldnt have scored 6 goals thats for sure. he has been doing the work of two strikers so he must be knackered by now? plus he has to be given time to adjust to league football

What a way to answer the critics, a 6-1 demolition, and a pretty decent performance on the whole, shame to ship a single goal but when you score 6, what does it matter so well-done.

Nice to see Nouble get a debut goal, what are the charlton fans on saying he is slow?

One thing I have decided now though after yesterdays game is that Kedwell is not football-league level. He is a trier for sure, but so was Gary Mulligan. I just dont see Kedwell scoring goals at league level.

Happy with a great result and 3 points, amazing how changing the tactics works!

To Hessenthaler & the team, a BIG result there – fantastic! A BIG well done all round. We the supporters have waited a long time for away result like this after spending many hours travelling & spending large amounts of money to see the team play away from home. Now we need to push on starting with a victory at home to Burton Albion next Weekend. Will Hessenthaler & the team be up for it? I hope so. I don’t agree that we are promotion material as we’ve shown very little against the better teams in the league & have been bullied by them. I feel that we lack decent players down the wings & upfront. We still haven’t got a 25 to 30 goals a season striker & that IS a must if you want to win promotion from any league. I also don’t believe that we have a Football League levelled goalkeeper within our squad.

We may have been playing the worst team within the whole of the English League within Hereford United, but to score six goals is a VERY decent amount. We know that Plymouth Argyle are bottom of the league, but in truth they are no more for they are bust, broken & their name will be taken from football VERY soon. So in reality Hereford United are the bottom side in the league. We can compete against the bottom teams, but to win promotion we would need to compete against the top teams. We got stuffed 3-0 at Rotherham United & lost 1-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town. This shows that we are some way behind the top teams in this league. We also saw last season that we are behind when we failed to even make the Play Offs. Unfortunately we can’t play teams like Hereford United every Week. I would expect the better teams within the league to also beat the bottom teams so it’ll be what we do against the top teams that counts. Can we compete with them? I don’t believe so. Until we have better players we are going no where. The 6-1 is decent, but we can’t be fooled by it. We still don’t have the required players to take this football club into League One for next season.

I stand by a 16th placed finish for us. That is how good our squad is – 16th. Against Southend United’s ten men we struggled. We should be able to beat Burton Albion at home. I don’t believe we have the correct manager in charge. Hessenthaler got it wrong over the summer with some of the signings that he made including ALL 3 of the goalkeepers. If we’d of got a decent striker on our books for the season then we’d be sitting within the top 3 in the league now. It’s that decent striker that’s setting us back BIG time. Please don’t point to Adam Birchall being the answer for he isn’t the answer. And if we can’t afford a decent striker because we simply don’t have the funds then fair enough, but for that we won’t win promotion as decent strikers win you promotions. Finally our “manager” has learnt to put 2 strikers upfront, but would he be willing to do that against one of the top sides within this league?

Well done on the victory to the team, VERY good, but now we need to make up for those past few Weeks when the results & performances have been a disaster. Prove to the supporters that you do mean promotion this season. And Scally you prove it by going out & getting us that decent striker to fire us to it. We don’t ask for 6 goals every Week, we just want to see a performance & effort to win for our football club. We understand we’ll have the odd bad result. We need to frighten more teams & never chuck the towel in. We don have some good players within our ranks & we hope to see the best from them. One decent striker & maybe one decent winger & then we can beat anyone in this league. Hessenthaller we understand that you are a fan of this football club like us & we know you want the best for the club. We’d love to see you celebrating promotion with us at the end of the season. At the moment we are only fit for 16th come May. What can you do this Week & beyond to turn that around? Prove to us ALL that you & this squad you have are good enough. But you did need that decent striker Son!

Now lets have that 6-1 win at home, that’s what we need at Prestfield to lift the sprits. Hopefully we can do it with a clean sheet. To the team – Use that 6-1 today as an advantage for next Weekend & beyond, when you shoot you can score, we can win matches, you can do, To the supporters – GET THE ATMOSPHERE UP! Get that Priestfield Stadium rocking & together with the squad lets have 3 points next Week & another decent all round performance!

We CAN stuff Burton Albion – BELIEVE IT!

P.S – FANTASTIC TODAY TO HESSENTHALER & THE TEAM – NO COMPLAINTS!

And have a good Day of golfing in Biddenden tomorrow Hessenthaler.

    BREAKING NEWS

It is with much sadness thas that i inform you fellow Gills fans that our good friend RON has passed away, he was found face down in Dover Harbour wearing stockings and suspenders and his favorite Dover top with "Birchall" on the back, it was all too much today with the Gills winning 6-1 and RON's team (some non-league outfit called Dover Athletic) lost 3-1
    RIP RON !! :-)

i wonder which idiot will be the first to say that it was 'only Hereford'. It takes a lot to score six goals away from home no matter who the opposition is. Yes we have lost points due to the length of time it took to get a striker but hopefully now is the turning point.

Give Ron a couple more hours, he starts his boring posts at the full time whistle. He might even be a bit later than usual as he's annoyed at Dover losing 3-1.

I hope we never have to put up with you in charge ever again after this Weekend's match Hessenthaler. You've been a BIG let down & so have the players you've signed. Your time at this football club has been up for a long time. Your squad didn't get a goal against Hereford United last season & they won't this Weekend either.

You are clueless, out of your depth & have wasted ALL funds. It's not that we are about to give some a BIG pasting soon, it's that we're the one to recieve it. Someone soon WILL beat us 6 or 7-0. 1 point from 12 possible points over the past 4 matches is pathetic & relegation form all over.

We are sick of you, sick of your lack of management knowledge & now stuck with a very poor squad in a very poor league. Mark Stimson would've got this football club promoted last season, but you couldn't. You even lost to Non League Dover Athletic 2-0 at home in the FA Cup with your team beaten silly ALL over the Priestfield pitch.

Time to go Hessenthaler, time to go!

Hereford United to show us how to put the ball in the net!

Not sure which I am more pleased about, the 3 points or your post Ronald McDonald!

Mind you I suspect you are loving the attention Ron so expect you will be having a night in reading comments on here with a box of tissues.
