Gillingham respond to Andy Hessenthaler's half-time rollicking

Andy Hessenthaler looks on during Gillingham's 3-1 home win against Burton Albion

Andy Hessenthaler admitted he was forced to use a few “choice words” at half-time to get his team firing.

A sloppy opening half had finished 1-1, but the Gills dominated after the break and in the end beat Burton Albion comfortably.

Gills boss Hessenthaler said: “We were happy in the end. In the first half I wasn’t delighted at all because we started very slowly. We looked like the away side and they looked like the home side. They took the game to us.

“We gradually got into the game and started playing with a bit more tempo and then got the goal from a good set-play. Danny Kedwell is a threat from them and Danny Jackman has the quality (delivery).

“We then started being sloppy with the football. We were giving the ball away too cheaply and we gave a silly goal away and went in at half-time disappointed.

“There were a few words said but we came out and started the second half the way we should have started the first.

“It didn’t need me to be saying anything to them really. They knew what I was going to say. They are not silly and they have been in the game long enough. They knew at half time they might get it in the ear hole and they did with a few choice words. They all agreed with everything I said.

“We need to start better and they responded to that in the second d half. The captain has said, ‘why do we need a rollocking from the gaffer at half-time to go and respond?’

“We earned the win in the end and it was a good result. Burton had only lost one and hadn’t conceded too many goals so it’s a pat on the back for the boys in the second half.”

Jackman was outstanding in centre midfield why oh why does anyone wish he had played anywhere else on Saturday. MOM for me.Frampton did a job at left back for once Rooney did his fair share of work. There is every chance that was down to the skipper yelling at him.

Great result after a sticky start.Found the selection a bit strange with our best central defender at full back where he was exposed for the Burton goal.We have sufficient quality midfielders to have slotted Jackman in at left back to allow Andy Frampton to resume in central defence.Unfortunately Gary Richards distribution leaves a bit to be desired as 90% of his passes are hit long and hopefull.
Well done to all of our players for a great afternoons entertainment.
What has happened to the hapless "Ron" now we have beaten a team with a useful record.??

Nige, do you honestly think Hess didn't know that 451 wasn't working? He knew for weeks that he needed another striker but unfortunately it took longer than anyone would have wanted. But I, for 1, am pleased he kept persueing the right man rather than just any one. Given the available options 451 was the best way to go at the time, seeing as the alternative would have been starting with Oli or Payne up front. I felt like the issue with the previous formation seemed that, with an overloaded midfield, the players did not seem to want to take responsibility that they would do when afforded a bit more space like they are now, also when the ball went up to Ked's he was always fighting a losing battle and by the time support reached we unfortunately the ball had often been lost and we needed to defend again. We just seemed to play too deep. We've only conceded more than 1 goal on 2 occasions this season (2 for Barnet and 3 for Rotherham) and 2 of the 3 loses have been to late goals. We're only 3 points of top spot and the players have been, for the most part, playing well.

As for Jackman, he has played many fine games for us but been unfortunate with injury since his return but he is now showing the kind of form that he is capable of and has been doing so all season. We now how good he can be from his first spell and who can forget that performance he put in for Northampton a few seasons back? He destroyed us. He will come good, no is coming good and the more game time he gets the better.

It's easy being an armchair manager and looking at things with hindsight and to be critical of things when they go wrong with could have, should have would have but when we play well all you can do is say well done and unfortunately many fans seem unable to do that.

9 goals in 2 games is fantastic. Well done lads. Keep it up. Real Dons next week, Kedwell for av hat trick anyone?

Much better performance and although still room for improvement we are now definitely on the right track. Just a shame it took so long for Hess to realise what the fans knew weeks before about the formation.
We now have two decent quality fit forwards who look dangerous and also now finally been given a chance a decent looking back-up in Stefan. I won't comment on Oli however!
Thought Rooney was outstanding today (particularly in 1st half) and had clearly run himself into the ground by the time he was substituted.
Also much better performance by Jackman although needs a few more of them to convince me he should be on the field but well done for today at least.

I am gobsmacked that the experience of this squad do not understand that they nee to work much harder on the pitch. I know the individuals are capable, but as a unit, I do not think they are performing to the standard that they are capable of, nor which Hessenthaller is expecting of them.
