Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler says Gills deserved to lose to Shrewsbury

Andy Hessenthalerby Luke Cawdell

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler believed his side deserved to lose Saturday’s match with Shrewsbury.

Hessenthaler (pictured) expressed his disappointment at losing the game late-on but felt his side could have few complaints about the final outcome.

“I think they (Shrewsbury) deserved to win,” said the Gills boss.

“I'm maybe being too critical about my own team but I think over the 90 minutes they were the better team.

“We were too loose and we got what we deserved.”

The game ultimately hinged on two penalties. Gillingham missed one in the first half while Shrewsbury scored from the spot in injury-time.

“We are disappointed we missed the penalty and maybe that could have been a turning point but we have to do better than we did.

“The players were told that after the game and we are really disappointed. It hurts losing the goal at the end and Ross (Flitney) has come in and apologised (after conceding the penalty) but to be fair to him if it hadn’t been for him the scoreline could have been a lot more.

“Their penalty came from us giving the ball away in midfield and they broke off us.

"At times we were too deep as a group and we weren’t compact enough and for a game at home, I thought the game as a whole was too stretched.

“We are devastated that we conceded so late on but I think as a group we weren’t at it. We talked at half-time about improving and we had the disruption of losing Jack (Payne) in midfield with a medial problem in his knee. We readjusted but we didn’t pass the ball well enough.

“We were sloppy and you need to make things happen rather than wait for things to happen.

“We have worked all week on options and moving the ball and we didn’t do what we talked about.”

Despite now suffering back-to-back defeats the Gills remain well placed – just three points off the top of League 2.

“We are not going to get carried away,” Hessenthaler said.

“It’s too early really to look at league tables but we are three points off the top and that is what frustrates us even more, we could be a lot better.

"We need to get better if we are to do what we set out at the start of the season.”

What do you make of Hessenthaler's assessment? Have your say below.

Thought the Gills were very unlucky. If Keds had tucked the penalty away we would of won 3 or 4 nil. Great to see Jackman back in the side, he looked great at left back. Oli was back to his old self with his box of tricks second half.
Charlie Lee was full of energy like Weston and the new keeper was awesome. Kedwell looked sharp and just a question of time before he scores a hatrick... Gills looking promotion favourites again

Shrewsbury deserved their win yestyerday because they came and attacked us with a lively front four.
This is the main difference between our current squad and the teams we are playing they come at us but we just sit back and take it.
Yesterday every time Wright or Ainsworth got the ball they caused us problems and if Shrewsbury had had a Cody Mcdonald up front they would have had a hatful - as it was i'm glad marvelous Marvin had an off day and forgot his shooting boots.
We need to get a nippy winger
Fabian Brandy or the like, another Cody Mc or the like and we should start to play
442 or 433 at home to get the crowd going - yesterday apart from the last ten minutes it was like a morgue - we have a good squad but Lee,Whelpdale
weston,Oli and a few others were off their game and were poor.
These players need to show they want to play for us and give it everything - was particularly
upset about Westonn who i rate very highly but his performances of late are not good enough and maybe he needs to go on loan elsewhere or get a kick up the bum by the manager
to get him motivated - that's what a manager has to do to those not performing.
Rooney until he got cramp was a danger going at them and should start up front - he causes defences problems and needs to be there by virtue of his enthusiasm and his greed for the ball.
Whatever, i want to forget this very poor game and hope that next week and beyond we change the format, get some lively wingers/forwards in and start to show what we are about.
I just want us out of this very poor division with the big boot brigade just a memory and to get back to playing real passing
football - like Brighton or Reading play.
The Gills are always MY team whatever the result - let's see some passion for winning the ball and stop the other team playing it about as they seem to do with ease against us.UTG

I'm new to Kent Online this season and read numerous negative comments from Ron and others regarding Hessy and the team.

Been a Gills fan since mid nineties and seen many great performances and plenty of poor performances. Like every fan, we are optimistic of promotion and will always support the Management and the Team but this season I'm beginning to have doubts (which is a continuation from the two 4-2 home defeats).

We are all aware that we need at least 2 strikers as Kedwell is running himself to the ground. Payne is still young and learning his trade and Oli is a mystery. I really do want him to prove the doubters wrong but every time he had the ball, he never outsmarted the defence and passed it back to a team-mate (often poorly) and never appeared to take a single shot on target.

The ball just kept coming back to the opposition far too often and we seemed to run out of ideas far too quick.

Someone commented that it was a poor game and should have been 0-0. I disagree completely, from my angle at the Rainham End, their guy Morgan really should have scored a hat-trick as he managed to get in the right areas and only his poor finishing prevented the goals.

This wasn't the only game that we have played poorly this season. I believe we should have been home and dry at Barnet early on but in the second half they dominated and deserved their point.

Plymouth didn't show much to worry our defence but it took a long time until we seriously challenged their goal.

My point being that it IS very early in the season and we are very close to the top of the table but we urgently need the adjustments to occur now before we lose our way.

Hessy needs an Assistant to bounce ideas/tactics off and I hope he manages to get the loan strikers in asap as the team seems stale and shattered after only a sprinkle of games.

I cannot believe the amount of negativity on here after the match. No it was not a good performance but nor was it a bad one, just very average. There was nothing to pick between the two sides and I think we were unlucky to lose - a goalless draw would have summed up the game perfectly.
Flitney pulled off two superb saves to keep us in it and although clumsy in giving away the penalty where was the defence?
As for the back line over the whole match I thought Lawrence was excellent and thoroughly deserved his man of the match award, Fuller also battled well, & Frampton was steady. However Jackman was shockingly poor & Martin has to be put straight back in v Accrington. I think Hessy only dropped Martin as a backlash to last week and that was a very poor decision as until Rotherham had been one of our best most consistent performers this season. Jackman frankly should be shipped out. And as for all the garbage on here last week about wanting Richards to start no thanks he is an accident waiting to happen. Give me Frampton & Lawrence every time.
The midfield was quiet today with only Rooney making a real impression, although to be fair to Lee he did okay considering not trained all week due to illness.
Up front considering Kedwell also been out all week like Lee felt he did the best he could. He was clearly shot after 30mins but never gave up, unlike Donkey Oli who did absolutely s*d all for the hour he was on the pitch (125 chances & counting - how many more?!).
Hessy has to prove himself this week by bringing in a quality loan striker when the window opens on Wed in time for next Sat - no more excuses now. Although I have heard a few names banded about (Benson, Kuffour, Clarke etc. what about Rory Fallon who is available (if we can forgive him for being WIBS)).
Let's see what happens & roll on next Sat v Acc.

Hessenthaler OUT! Hessenthaler you ARE a gutless manager! Well what did I tell you ALL hey? I told you that we would lose BOTH of these two matches & yes we HAVE! We are NOT good enough to mount a serious promotion challenge, no where near good enough as these two matches have proved now to everyone. My pre season predictions have proved correct. We can beat pub, part time & bust teams but we can't play them every Week. When we come up against a decent side in our own league we can't match them in any department. This club WILL sink down this league now. I told you all to take a photograph when we were sitting 2nd in the league. We WILL finish 16th place this season. You can ALL shut up about promotion challenges now.

We are a club that is going BACKWARDS at a VERY fast rate. We have a "manager" thats just living on past times as a decent lower league player, that's all it is. Lets not joke ourselves, Hessenthaler will NEVER be a league manager. It was Pulis & Taylor that built the team that did us well in the Championship in what now seems many decades ago. We are a shadow of those former Days. Hessenthaler has proved that he is a man not up to the job. Adam Birchall was injured 2 Months ago, yet our "manager" can not & does not have the brains to replace him. Instead we are left with a one man band upfront. Hessenthaler you are NEVER going to mount any promotion challenge with 1 striker up front at home EVERY match. Your tactics are pathetic just like your transfer ideas.

The best thing you can do now Hessenthaler is GO! Go now before you ARE sacked in October. We as supporters have now HAD ENOUGH! It's you thats cost us. You had your BIG chance last season when the club had double its budget of this seasons, that was our BIG chance & you blew it. You couldn't even make the Play Offs last season, pathetic. Even Torquay United & Accrington Stanley finished above us last season & there is NO excuse for that. You were also beaten at home by Dover Athletic in the FA Cup in what should've been your last match. You've had long enough now to prove yourself. The past 2 matches were your test & you HAVE FAILED! You know you've failed, so GO!

You've needed an assistant manager to help you out & you've made that decision not to have one. You haven't got a clue what you are doing! You can not play one man upfront at home. That today v Shrewsbury Town was awful. We were out passed all over the pitch & totally out played. We have seen v Rotherham United & v Shrewsbury Town whats needed for promotion & we are NO WHERE near it. Those 2 ARE going up this season & we AREN'T! And YES its YOUR FAULT!

This is a manager who's team let in 7 goals at Accrington Stanley last season. We had 5 times the amount of budget last season that Accrington Stanley had. They made the Play Off's & we didn't. Accrington Stanley took us to the cleaners at their place last season. We ARE PATHETIC! Scally can stop his talk now about this being our best team for Years. THIS IS OUR WORST TEAM FOR YEARS WITH OUR WORST MANAGER FOR YEARS! Stimson got us promotion with our first season back in League Two. Hessenthaler you need to GO!

    - WE AREN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR PROMOTION & NEVER WAS!

    - HESSENTHALER WILL BE GONE BY THE END OF OCTOBER!

    - HESSENTHALER WILL BE BARNET MANAGER IN JANUARY 2012!

    - WE'LL FINISH 16TH THIS SEASON!

    - OUR SUPPORTERS NEED TO GET REAL, WE'RE STUCK WITH A RUBBISH SQUAD THANKS TO AN IDIOT OF A MANAGER!

As Hessy worked it out yet but the Gillingham players cant play 4-5-1 formation and we dont need two holding midfielders either, we cant score as it is. Frank Spencer's was hopless when he came on, could not even laugh at him today as he hardly touched the ball. We must be the only club who has a striker that cant score in open play and unlikely to either, he has no pace which showed today when he had a yard on the centre back when through on goal and lost by several yards. Flitney saved us from a trouncing however he undone all his hard work with a school boy error instead of standing his ground.
