Gillingham 0 Shrewsbury 1

Danny Kedwell rues missing a first-half penalty.by Luke Cawdell

Gillingham were beaten by an injury-time penalty at Priestfield on Saturday.

Nicky Wroe scored from the spot in the fourth minute of stoppage-time to hand Shrewsbury the points.

For the Gills, they were made to pay for failing to convert from the spot themselves, after Danny Kedwell had seen his first half effort saved by keeper Ben Smith.

Kedwell (pictured) had netted twice from the spot in the Gills’ last home game but infront of the Rainham End he saw his low shot saved by Smith midway through the half.

The opportunity from the spot came after Luke Rooney, in for Danny Spiller, was felled by Shrews defender Jermaine Grandison.

Rooney had looked sharp on the left flank for the Gills and had earlier come close with a low shot that was drilled across the face of Smith’s goal.

Shrewsbury, with decent attacking players in their line-up, came close themselves in the opening half and striker Marvin Morgan should have converted from close range.

He instead blasted over after Gills keeper Ross Flitney had parried Shane Cansdell-Sherriff’s header into his path.

On the half hour Wroe curled an effort narrowly wide from outside the area as the visitors remained dangerous – buoyed by Smith’s penalty save.

Just before the break Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler made a switch as Jack Payne limped off for Dennis Oli. The Gills switched formation, from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2, with Oli joining Kedwell in attack.

In the opening minute of the second half Morgan had a shot turned wide of the post by Flitney and from the subsequent corner headed into the side netting.

Barry Fuller also needed to make a good tackle to deny Mark Wright after the Shrewsbury man broke clear.

The visitors continued to press forward at the start of the second half and Flitney had to make a great low save to tip Wroe’s shot wide.

Rooney drilled a couple of low shots on target at the other end but Smith dealt with them comfortably, as he did with Lewis Montrose’s powerful effort.

An open second half saw chances at both ends and Barry Fuller had to make a desperate block to deny Morgan after Terry Gornell had played him in.

The game was decided from the spot when Flitney felled Sean McAllister in the box. Wroe’s first attempt was converted but he was made to retake it by referee Fred Graham due to encroachment. He made no mistake with the second attempt to ruin Gills’ day.

Gills: Flitney, Fuller, Frampton, Lawrence, Jackman, J Payne (Oli 43mins), Montrose (Martin 70mins), Lee, Weston (Whelpdale 59mins), Rooney, Kedwell. Subs not used: Richards, Gazzaniga.

I'm also a supporter for over 50years , and I can only agree with the comments of oxford blue . I think that with Weston , Lee and Whelpdale , we have a midfield which is as good as any in Div 2 , and better than most. If Hess cannot work out what is going on , then he ought to go .It is obvious that playing Kedwell up front on his own just does not work !! Hess was one of the best players to ever played for the club , but we cannot go on week after week saying that the team needs improving . As oxford blue says ,I'll be there next week and hoping that there will be a better display than Saturdays dismal display. Otherwise it will be a long season .

A loyal supporter for over 50 years and travel to every home game and quite a few away, but this is my first time of making any written comments, which has been brought about by total frustration with the way we play and the decisions made during a game.
As such, 4-5-1 can work if it is fluid and flexible enough, with the midfield moving the ball quickly and going beyond the front-man. We however, do none of this, although we have a lot of talented midfielders.
So it is how we use the system. For example in the last two games Jack Payne has been substituted and so we immediately go to 4-4-2, with the ineffective Oli. Why? If we believe in 4-5-1, then let's make the system work! Another thing, Payne has been our most effective midfielder sitting back, but when he goes off, then no-one sits deep. Montrose did this really well for Wycombe last year, but yesterday, we substituted him, when he should have stayed on doing Payne's job.
So other comments are right; the gap between Kedwell and midfield is too great and we just revert to last season by hitting long balls from the back.
I thought I would never say this, but we could learn from England - two holding midfielders and three working with Kedwell, going beyond him and playing balls back for him to get strikes. Let's ask ourselves, when have we seen Kedwell played-in by other players this season, without him having to get the ball, turn and lay it off, while he moves forward to wait for the return. It's all too slow and that's not how 4-5-1 is played. We were told by Hess that we would play at pace, but unfortunately the moment we have come up against good and tactically aware teams then we're back to Huff & Puff. The Cheletenham, Crewe and Plymouth game are good examples and they were all pretty poor, but they held-out or put us under pressure late-on because we don't play to our own system. We have the players, but I agree with a lot of the other comments our coaching and decision making is poor.
Let's face it, even if we bring in another 'average' striker and go to 4-4-2, do we have the pace to play that system by getting behind and beyond defences?
See you all next week for as someone said a scraped win and the cracks getting papered over. Such is our long-suffering way of life. Come on you 'blue-boys'

Ouch. Bad, bad day at the office today and whilst many (Ron) is going OTT, there are reasons to be concerned. 4-5-1 does not work and we are lop sided with no natural left footed wide man. Again once Oli came on, we looked worse! Hopefully Hess will address this next week in the loan market and hopefully he has identified who he wants and had to wait. Otherwise the pressuure will continue to crank up on Hess. As has been pointed out he has had 6 weeks to address this and whilst we are not flushed with cash, I am sure Scally would once again support him in the Market.

Positives, defensively sound although surely Martin is a better option than Jackman, saw that Flitney is a decent keeper, looking better than Julian, and I still maintain that in Lee and Welsps we have two of the best midfielders in this league.

Big week for the manager, lets hope he is can deliver.

    OVER AND OUT!

Enough faffing about, time to go Hessenthaler.
The point of 4-5-1 is to get at least two of the five midfielders, it`s called flexibility Andy, in support of the lone striker; QUICKLY!
Yet again we find ourselves in a match situation where you could hold a carnival in the space between the midfield and the front man and yet again the manager fails to address this shortcoming.
All the opposition have to do is drop back and they will soon regain control of the ball, as we punt it aimlessly long and then have to charge 30 yards simply to get near it again!
Hessenthaler surely must see this flaw. IT IS GLARINGLY OBVIOUS!
    What about the players themselves.
They must have identified this shortcoming, but like their manager appear oblivious to the consequences.
Let me say it again; the gap between the midfield and lone striker is too great. F*%+ing close it!
Then, then he reverts to 4-4-2.
Hessenthaler, it is outdated. It is yesterday`s news.
Shrewsbury, like Rotherham last week, had fluid movement between three or four attackers either from midfield or wide out that gave them options that kept our defence guessing for the full ninety minutes, plus penalty conceding stoppage time!
Flitney actually played well but the fact will be forgotten amidst the recriminations.
The central defensive pairing also played well enough, but their chronic lack of pace will make them susceptible to quick opponents all season.
The Jackman experiment failed; left back required.
    Fuller, committed as ever.
Midfield. There is simply no spark (Rooney apart), nothing that makes you think we might occasionally see a bit of the unexpected, something, anything to make opponents think. But no, safe predictability.
Kedwell, like Oli, hardly worth discussing. But in his defence he lacks any form of support.
I Maintain we have to play 4-3-3 and if we persist with Kedwell, with Rooney and Whelpdale either side of him.
The long and the short of this piece simply is, we have a manager who possesses little grasp of the basic fundamentals of the tactical nuances required to succeed even in the lower ranks of the professional game, and for the good of the club, he should go. NOW!
    OVER AND OUT!

Absolute terrible display, long ball up to Kedwell all the time , can't they play the ball on the ground. Kedwell needs help urgently or he will run himself to a standstill. Why oh why do we use Oli the bloke hasn't a clue.Would have been better to put Richards on up front he is a big guy and puts himself about. Perhaps we will get Martin back at full back next time and if we play Jackman use him in midfield.

Absoulately 100% well said rich-gfc, I could not agree more, Hess was a great footballer but as a manager he is hopeless. Gillingham FC is going struggle with him charge. I have been supporting the Gills for nearly 30 years now and the brand of football we play under Hess is to say the least pants. I for one was disappointed with his appointment but thought I would give him a chance, but as of yet all I have seen is boring negative football and a team looking like a mid table league two side. A message for Hess, can we please play some entertaining football as I pay a lot of money to watch the Gills. Here's hoping then....

As soon as players sweat, they are expending energy. Extensive 'warm ups' such as the 45 minute ones that Nicky Southall and Darren Hare organise prior to kick-off are physiologically unsound. Warm-ups of this length are simply unnecessary and tire the players. The players are absolutely knackered by the time they return to the pitch for kick-off. This is absolutely bonkers! Anyone in the ground will have witnessed the sudden tiring of the players in the early stages of the second half

Why can't the Gills use sport science effectively - or get coaches that actually know about sports physiology, and psychology for that matter!

there is no way we are currently good enough to go up, in terms of a squad or our setup.

last season was some of the worst football we have ever played in the 25 years i have been coming, particularly at home. hessenthaler wasted a great chance to go back up at the first time of asking, we were constantly outplayed, could not string two or three passes together, were one of the unfittest teams in the football league and tactically inept, yet he publically blamed the players at every opportunity, without once taking any responsibility himself. he was given the benefit of the doubt, having used every excuse in the book.

so far this season, little has changed - our initial wins were against teams that will probably finish lower down the league, and even those were a struggle and hardly convincing. one constant so far however is still our inability to play football, with heading and long-ball tactics the order of the day. we still cannot string more than two passes together, our movement of the ball is so slow it is almost non existant, the players are still unfit, the balance of the side is totally wrong and the tactics are laughable. too many people are blinded by their loyalty to hess the player - have so many people forgotten just how poor he was last time, especially when his assistant manager left, leaving him with the physio as coach - even now, nothing has changed - he cannot sort the players fitness, they are already lacking in confidence, are not responding to him and seem devoid of any ideas - even the quality that lee, whelpdale and frmapton have is being sucked out of them by this inept, out of his depth manager.

yet again today he came on the radio and told the players it was not acceptable, how long before he has to realise that his own peformance is way below par and that the buck stops with him, not them.

we will probably scrape a marginal win next week and all the rose-tinted fans will be back defending him - i think that by the end of october we will be in the bottom eight, with hess going if we are to have any chance of achieving anything this season - i would love hess to lead us to the title, after all, why should we accept other than first place, with the money he has had to spend, but just do not see him as being able to manage that.

We were hopeless today, a real shocking performance. I think we have the potential to do really well this season and have one of the strongest midfields in the league but today the midfield and upfront were our downfall.
It seems Charlie Lee still felt the effects of his illness as he was one of the worst out there today. Thank god for our solid defence and keeper otherwise it really could have been 4 or 5. Literally the only decent chance we had was the penalty and that was a shocker.

Anyway, still 3 points off top and a week before our next game where I think we're going to have to step it up a lot. And please Hessy, never play Oli again, he is awful. Rumours that Paul Benson or Jo Kuffour could be coming to Priestfield onloan this week. UTG.
