Gillingham 1 Accrington Stanley 1

Luke Rooney scores Gillingham's equaliser from the penalty spot

Luke Rooney rescued a point for Gillingham on a disappointing afternoon at Priestfield.

The visitors went a goal up with six minutes remaining through Ian Craney, but three minutes later the scores were level when Rooney scored from the penalty spot. It was a hectic end to a game which had offered few glimpses of goalscoring action.

Charlie Lee had Gillingham’s only two chances in the opening half, with the first coming as early as the third minute. Rooney played the ball into Lee’s path but, with time on his side, the shot was too close to keeper Sean Murdoch and he made the save.

There was little goalmouth action of note in the first 45 minutes and Accrington took until the half-hour to register their first shot. That went well wide with Padraig Amond putting his chance into the Town End.

Lee came close again from a Danny Jackman corner but, with no marker in sight, he guided his header on target but couldn’t beat defender Dean Winnard, who cleared off the line.

Gills keeper Ross Flitney was called into action just before the break as he tipped Kevin McIntyre’s shot wide of the post.

The jeers at the break from the home fans showed what they thought of the first half’s action.

After a slow start to the second half, the Gills came close just before the hour with an effort from Lewis Montrose that whizzed past the post, after latching onto Barry Fuller’s cross. The pace of the game had livened up and, at the other end, Flitney had to be alert to hang onto Winnard’s header.

With 66 minutes gone, Stefan Payne was brought on to offer support to striker Danny Kedwell as Gills switched to a two-man attack. Montrose came close with a shot again, this time turning Jackman’s corner just wide.

Gillingham had a let off with eight minutes left when Craney put fellow substitute Louis Moult in the clear, but he stabbed a good chance wide of the post.

Craney got things right a minute later when he blasted into the net to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

The game, which had seen little in the way of action, suddenly exploded into life and the Gills went down the other end and immediately won a penalty when Kedwell was fouled by Moulton. Rooney smashed the penalty in off the post to level the scores.

The Gills were level but Kedwell was unable to continue as he limped out of the action following the foul.

Gillingham: Flitney, Fuller, Martin, Lawrence, Richards, Jackman, Montrose, Lee (S Payne 67mins), Whelpdale (Spiller 79mins), Rooney, Kedwell (Oli 88mins). Subs not used: Weston, Fish.

Accrington: Murdoch, Winnard, Hessey, Proctor, Lindfield, Joyce, McIntyre, Murphy, Long, Fletcher (Craney 77mins), Amond (Moult 64mins). Subs not used: Guthrie, Bender, Dunbavin.

Attendance: 4,619.

Well I'm still optimistic. I think we'll reach the playoffs. See you at Wembley next May, Oli to come off the bench in the final to net the winning goal and prove all the doubters wrong, and he will be rewarded with a new 3 year deal as Plan B up front in League 1.

Well that's my optimism shot to the ground after yet another lack lustre game with players who give up if players run past them(Montrose look at the game DVD).
All min all another very poor game with two teams who had no clue of how to break each other down and in the end just gave it the big boot(God i hate this division).
Hess i have always admired you as a player and as a manager but i really think you need to get a tactician in to sort out how we can play attacking entertaining football to at least keep us fans content.
I can take defeat but i can't watch this dross much longer i have supported this team since i was 5 over 60 years ago, good and bad seasons mainly bad seasons, but even when we were poor we were entertaining(well sometimes anyway).
We desperately need a nippy winger(Come back Barcham, Jarvis & Co)and for goodness sake a couple of attacking forwards - I think Dennis and Stefan should be rested and some of the kids given a trial they couldn't do any worse than what we have suffered the past three games.
We are still giving visiting sides too much time on the ball,we are still not putting them under pressure,Accrington
did to us and never let us settle.
Please hurry up and change this complete and utter dross we are being served up and get it moving again with some good ole attacking football with flair.
A totally dejected long suffering fan - who will of course be at Southend on Tuesday and hopes for a 110% effort to show us fans what is possible.

We'll see that school boy Miller on the bench for the next game if Kedwell is injured, really a joke how short on strikers we are.

Promotion side?? Well from the 5 games i have been to this season we look more like a team who will finish in the bottom half. Why Hessy continues to play two holding midfielders in home games is beyond me, his tactics are poor and he desperatley needs a right hand man with some knowledge to match Hessys heart which is clearly in the right place. Thought the Keeper and defence played well, midfield was very poor, was Montrose playing? Jackman is a smurf and useless. Whelpdale quiet and Rooney's positional play dreadful again. Thought Charlie Lee was the best one and Hessy sub him, maybe it looks a lot better from the dug out. We need strikers, not one but 3 in my opinion but i would settle for one the way the season is shaping up.

Total utter dross! No effort on the pitch, not tactics from the manager.

Season ticket holder and full of optimism before the season started now I just leave the ground feeling fed up.

We have Stephan Payne and Dennis Oli on the bench, how pony must they be to not be starting even when its blatantly obvious 4-5-1 is not working at home.

I wandering now if it was Hendon that was the tactician because Hessy doesn't seem to make anything happen on the pitch.

We have passionate fans who pay good money and we expect and deserve better.

I dont expect Andy is bothered to much about Kedwells injury he has a fine replacement in Oli,should be entertaining any way,I am now lost for words after that display, you need to replace Hendon and fast, the team lacked any ideas, first half was dire and I think to crowd showed their frustration,Andy says its tough to break teams down that arrive here at Priestfield,I guess it is with one forward who works tirelessly but a fact is no goals from open play,This is just not good enough nowhere near it,I have never been negative on here but this season is slipping away, one point from 9,

I don't want to post negative comments but there certainly isn't anything positive to say about today's game. We're so lucky to take a share of the points. I couldn't see any tactics throughout the game and of course Hessy seemed to run out of any form of direction and decided that the best option was sit back and let the boys hoof it all around the park. Now we'll have to get someone in on loan but I fear we'll be pushed to take anyone now Kedwell appears to be injured.
I love it when Oli comes on and gives as a taste of his delicate swirls, great entertainment. We're not getting any from the football.
Sorry guys but it was dire again!!

If you actually read these reports rather than just commenting on them.It was clear that Hess was hoping on bring a player in on loan rather than buying one from the start, So I don't know why people have been moaning over the last month about it. The loan market hasn't been open a week a guess what were moaning. Lets do a Stimson and bring 3 players in that are going to score 3 goals in 30 games or we can do a Hess and wait a while for a decent striker its up to you?!?!?!?!

How much longer must we endure struggling along with no striking options? We seem intent on leaving things and hoping the problem will just go away. It has'nt and it's clearly getting worse. With Kedwell now injured the time for action surely cannot be delayed any longer? Is a 1 month emergency loan too much to ask? Two winnable away games coming up mean the pressure's really on to get something sorted and fast...
