Gillingham's League 2 play-off bid could go down to the wire

Andy Hessenthaler

Andy Hessenthaler knows this season could go down to the wire once again for his Gillingham side.

Last year the Gills missed out on the play-offs on goal difference and that was what cost the club a place in League 1 the previous campaign.

Hessenthaler (pictured) is used to leaving it late, having experienced the Championship season in 2004, where the Gills survived relegation thanks to a fractionally better goal record than Walsall.

"We haven’t done things easy here over the years," admitted the Gills boss. "We all know that we set out to get promoted, like last year. This year it’s going to be a tough ask to do it, but who knows.

"We are disappointed we didn’t get into the top three but it’s a thin line between that success and failure; if that’s what it is.

"We are a good side but we haven’t been consistent enough."
