Gillingham boss Martin Allen left Callum Davies out at the weekend to give him a break
by Alex Hoad
Teenage defender Callum
Davies was rested for the trip to Rotherham after a couple of
performance "didn’t go his way", according to Gillingham boss
Martin Allen.
The
19-year-old youth team product has started 14 games for Allen’s
side this season, 10 of them in the league, but he was omitted from
the 18-man squad for the trip to Rotherham with Andy Frampton
partnering skipper Adam Barrett in central defence.
Allen revealed that after
holding a meeting with the youngster, Davies (pictured) had
received special coaching from academy coach and ex-Gills star Mark
Patterson.
Allen explained: "I decided to
give him a couple of days training with Patto.
"I had a good long chat with him
in my office, for a 19-year old he has been absolutely fantastic -
I just thought he needed to have a break.
"He has had to train quite hard,
as all of our players do on Thursdays and Fridays, but it was just
to give him a break.
"He’s only 19, been involved
with us all the time, and has had a couple of big games recently
that haven’t quite gone his way. It’s time for a break for the
boy."
