Gillingham sign Brentford defender Leon Legge on loan ahead of League 2 match against Southend United

Gillingham have boosted their defensive options going into 2013 with the capture of Brentford defender Leon Legge.

Legge, pictured, joins the Gills initially on a one-month loan deal in time for the New Year's Day trip to Southend, but the deal is likely to be made permanent at the end of January.

The move was announced by the League 1 club on Monday afternoon. Legge previously impressed for non-league Tonbridge Angels before he moved to Griffin Park. He made 115 appearances for The Bees and scored 10 goals.

Brentford boss Uwe Rosler said: "I think the move is in the best interests of Leon and us in that we fulfil his wish for regular playing time.

"I want to thank him for the service he gave the club and to me - he is an honest lad and gave his all."

The Gills have been light in numbers defensively in recent weeks after an injury cut short Tom Flanagan's loan spell from MK Dons.
