Andy Hessenthaler unhappy with Gillingham's poor defending against Southend United

Andy Hessenthaler makes his point

Andy Hessenthaler makes his point to the officials      Picture: Barry Goodwin

Andy Hessenthaler was left to rue the defensive mistakes that proved costly once again.

After successive 4-3 defeats Gillingham failed to keep it tight again as they conceded twice against Southend.

Hessenthaler said: "It was poor defending in the first half and for the first goal, Lewis Montrose lost the ball in the middle of the park.

"Their right-back has played a ball in and to be fair to Matty Lawrence he has held his hands up and said, 'I haven't narrowed up on Ferdinand' and he's had a free header.

"Matty knows what he has to do, but we are making mistakes and these shouldn't happen."

The Gills found themselves 1-0 down after just 10 minutes.

Hessenthaler continued: "It's not easy when you are on a bad run as you don't want to concede early on. That's what we did.

"We didn't pass the ball in the first half and we got roped into the way they played, very direct and very physical, and they did it well.

"The second goal might have been offside, Sky Sports are saying it's not. It didn't look like offside but when the ball went across the player might have been offside then. But I am not hiding behind referees. I think it came off Joe Martin in the end - he's scored a few own goals recently.

"We made changes at half time and put young Jack Payne on to give us a bit of penetration up and down. He was a risk, he had done just one day's training and we never thought he was going to be involved. He came in, he didn't feel bad and he came through a training session.

"We brought him on and tried to get the ball down and pass it a bit more. We did great in the second half but they (Southend) sat in there and made it difficult for us. We had a lot of the ball but just didn't work their keeper enough in the second half."

Hessenthaler introduced teenagers Connor Essam and Jack Evans in the second half, while fellow teen Paulo Gazzaniga made his first league start for the club.

"The biggest positive for me was the kids," said the Gills boss. "Paulo was terrific and pulled off one great save. He couldn't do much with the goals and then didn't have much to do. Jack Evans came on at right-back and young Connor also came on and did great. The positives for me were the boys who came on."

Is it time for the young players to get more action? Comment below.

I can't be bothered to read all of the comments on here, as I know that the majority are going to be negative. However, at the beginning of the season Hess had a target/requirement of 10 points per month, so far:
    August, 10 achieved (WWDWL)
    September, 7 achieved (LDLWW)
    October, 7 achieved (LDWWLL)
November, 7 achieved (WWD) plus a draw and a win against Bournemouth.
December, 7 achieved (DWWL) plus a win against Leyton Orient.
January, 3 achieved (WLLL) plus a loss to Stoke.
February, 0 achieved (L) plus 2 postponements, with 4 games to play.
March, 7 games scheduled (possibly 8 if the Burton game is re-arranged for midweek)
    April, 5 games scheduled
May, final game of the season.
Therefore, as it stands, we are 19 points off target (3 points for each month between Sept & Dec inclusive, 7 points for Jan).
We therefore require a minimum of 3 wins and a draw from the remaining games in Feb. This leaves us with 14 games from March-May, where we require 39 points (10 for each of March & April plus the 19 points we are down on his target) from a possible 42 available. Obviously, this is a mammoth task, but would give us 90 points come the end of the season.
Last year the champions achieved 86 (24W, 14D, 8L), with third place on 80 (final play-off place on 68 points) and in the 2008/09 season, when we achieved promotion, the champions achieved 85, with third place on 78 (final play-off place on 69 points).
If we can achieve 12W, 3D, 3L from our final games then there is no reason why we cannot achieve a play-off place at least.
Again, admittedly, this is a huge task. We need to replace the whole back 4 (possibly Evans, Essam, C.Davies, King if fit), we desperately need a midfield, as there was barely one visible against Southend (possibly, Jackman/Spiller, Kuffour on the wing, J.Payne & Weston) which leaves Kedwell & Tomlin up front. We cannot continue the 4-3-3 formation, as it is just not working, the 4-5-1 that we had at the beginning of the season proved to be relatively successful, but now we have Tomlin & Kuffour available, it makes sense to have a 4-4-2. Maybe we could rotate the strikers, with Kuffour on the bench?
I still have faith in the team and Hessenthaler to turn it around, though there needs to be drastic changes made! Up the Gills!

Hess did not take us into the championship he was player & captain.
Tony Pulis built the backbone of the side & we won promotion under the managership of Peter Taylor.
Hess then took on the roll of player manager and kept us in the championship for 5 seasons (fantastic times)
however his failings started when he stopped playing and was unable to influence matters on the field.
He is now showing the same failings as a manager 2nd time round.
I, like most others want to remember him as the most influential PLAYER ever to wear a Gillingham shirt.
Not as a failed manager TWICE

Well lets look at the facts.
The Chairman cannot afford (Financially)an experienced manager.
He has to work within a budget.
Bringing back Hess was a gamble but he needed to regain confidence from the fans.
Unfortunately it seems to have failed.
Before Hess was reappointed I wanted him to go for Dean Holdsworth.

Nobody thinks we have a divine right to succeed, but with the squad we have we should be in the mix and not freefalling into mid table as we are now. The players are undoubtedly talented, but they clearly don't want to play for Hess any longer. We need someone with some astute tactical knowledge who know how to get the best of a pretty good bunch, someone who won't play them out of position and someone who has the balls to drop the likes of Lawrence. If you apologists are happy to see us languishing in 13th with absolutely no chance of achieving anything except mid table mediocrity then perhaps you need to take a look at yourselves and wonder why you support a football club? Most supporters would like to see success, not obscurity. I for one would love to be proud of my club but this season is fast turning into an absolute joke. We all want the same thing ( i hope ) and that's for us to be showing the rest of League 2 that we're not as bad as 13th place would suggest. HESS OUT!

We are 15 points off of an automatic spot that was the stated aim of chairman and manager.

13 points off of 6th place.

5 points off of 7th place. As it stands we look to be one of 8 teams chasing that final playoff place, and are dropping behind in that respect, game after game.

I am no fan of Scally, but he has largely backed Hess with some quality signings for such a poor division - not many clubs in the division could afford the likes of Kedwell, Lee, Welpdale and Kuffour (Crawley were after all of those players). Our fans could be doing better, but we are averaging over 5000 at home and take probably 3/4+ times as many fans away than the pathetic offerings we see at Priestfield for the respective teams.

I think given those facts, nobody can deny, we are in a pathetic position and afre chronically under-achieving. After a poor season last season, it is time to stop the excuses (even the apologist have given up making excuses) and blaming the fans, the players, the pitch etc etc. I am afraid, there is only one man (well, he and the hangers-on around him) to blame and that is Hess.

I am surprised that there haven't been more calls for his head, but I am guessing that people are just resigned to continued patheticness on the pitch - afterall Scally has got to get back to Dubai and seek out new investors, so can't worry too much about what is going on at Priestfield and the traiing ground between matches.

In short, Hess we loved you as a player; don't make us hate you. For YOUR OWN sake man go, while we still respect you, get back some dignity and go, and give someone else a chance to turn things around and let us have a chance of getting that promotion we all want.
