Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga gets the nod to start for Gillingham against Southend at Priestfield

Paulo Gazzaniga

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler will make at least two changes to the side for Monday's game against Southend at Priestfield.

Rookie keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, pictured, who came on at half-time in the 4-3 defeat at Accrington, will start the game, which is live on Sky, with Ross Flitney out for a month following a knee operation.

A knee injury will also sideline Charlie Lee, with youngster Jack Evans favourite to play at right-back ahead of the experienced Matt Lawrence.

Defender Connor Essam, who has been on loan at Dartford, will also be in the Gillingham squad but Matt Fish and Simon King are ruled out.

Hessenthaler, who saw the weekend's trip to Burton postponed by a 9am pitch inspection on Saturday, said: "We want to play a game and get back on track. We’re still hurting from two weeks ago (against Accrington) and we want to put that right."

Midfielder Jack Payne (ankle) is a doubt but Danny Spiller could return for his first piece of action since September. Leading scorer Danny Kedwell missed training last week due to a virus but Hessenthaler will hope he is fit to start alongside Jo Kuffour (knee).

The Priestfield pitch has been under frost covers for the past 10 days but, with temperatures due to increase, there are no worries about the match. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Gillingham's youth keeper Ashley Bourne, meanwhile, has joined Sevenoaks on work experience.

Do you think Gazzaniga can take his chance to establish himself as Gillingham's No.1 keeper in Flitney's absence? Have your say below.

what a shower of sh*t our defence really is and always has been, yet our clueless so called manager went with that same pony back four!!!...now thats another 3pts we can't claw back!
you could see our midfield didn't even want to push forward, which would leave our suspect defence doing the job it's meant to, to only fold as always they do!

he had the chance to make a statement and start essam & evans but didn't have the balls to drop that cr*p he calls experienced pro's and that cost us yet again.

the crowd was small and very quiet and is a sign of what fans don't see happening anytime soon...no wonder really is it...whats there to sing or be proud about from this so called best team we have seen to grace a gills shirt...those were scally's words if i remember correctly!!!...yet again another clueless comment from a staff member.

not a single thing to offer as a team, except to hit high and to no one of note, plus pass along the backline when we are 2-0 down for most of the game.

no passion from hess or his shadow on the touchline, except a slight reaction when we scored...oh to little to late!

the guy has cost us yet again because he doesn't act as a manager should and drop richards, lawrence, weston, montrose.
both frampton & martin don't help the cause either!

we are falling away game by game, yet his actions & words seem to sit well with some fans...the guy is clueless and that team and performance shows that the so called passion and need of a player to want to wear that shirt are so far off the mark.

yet after the match that manager of ours said we might have to think about the younger players now and get back on to that training pitch to sort a few things out...sorry but these are problems that should of been and gone alongtime ago or dealtwith over the last two weeks of not having a game...yet here we are hearing the same garbage again and again!

hess your not the man for the job...i wish you were...but you just don't have the balls or knowhow thats needed to get a reaction from that team you call goodenough to achive success.

we as a club are not going anywhere unless drastic changes happen...fast!!!

only our faithful staff don't see what most supporters do!
