Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler insists he can handle the pressure

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler insists he can deal with the pressure after his side slipped to a fifth successive League 2 defeat.

The Gills now look to be chasing the final play-off spot in the table, along with up to eight other clubs, and the pressure to get results is building.

But Hessenthaler believes he has the backing from those that matter, the club board and chairman Paul Scally, and he is remaining upbeat after a spirited effort at Port Vale on Saturday.

Hessenthaler said: "Of course I am under pressure but that doesn’t worry me, I’m not that kind of person. Most managers will tell you that you go into the job knowing that one day you will get the sack.

"There are some top managers in the world who have been sacked. There is no shame in that but I am not thinking about that, I’m looking to the next game.

"I had a text from the chairman (after Saturday’s game). He is behind us and he will be behind us to the end if we keep showing that desire, commitment and effort."

Gillingham started the season chasing the automatic promotion places but now sit 17 points off the top three and six away from the play-offs, with 17 games remaining.

Despite the team’s under-performance, Hessenthaler believes he has the chairman’s backing.

Hessenthaler said: "I will always have the backing from the chairman because we have a relationship. He knows that I put in hours beyond a lot of people to be successful because it’s what I do, it’s how hungry I am and how passionate I am about the football club."

If it were not for the chairman's financial backing this season we would be in the bottom six, no doubt about it. If the likes of Cheltenham and Torquay can make a success of things with much smaller budgets the common denominator has to be mismanagement. Any other club would have acted by now, season tickets will not be renewed unless they do. Obviously you'll still get the apologists who'd forgive Hess if he slept with their wife shelling out for another season of this utter tripe. Seriously the most drab playing style since I started watching in '87. Fred, still think he's the man to take us forward? Doesn't that sound ridiculous now?? Mid to lower if he stays the season, bottom six if he's still here next season. Interesting times...

rohan ricketts sent a comment from his twitter page 40 odd mins ago, saying...i've had an interesting day...had a early morning interview with skysportsnews, then went training with a team i was hoping to sign for!
if that club is us, does it mean it's all off...due to gills wanting to see more of him, can't match his wages, or is he just saying he had hoped to have it tied up today???

i'm not on twitter, maybe someone could ask him whats the situation on him and fortune...if possible...nice one!

    2. Hess, you're useless. Please just leave.

what is really sad is that scally and hess are joined at the hip.

how any business can be run on friendship rather than performance is beyone me. the 2 just dont go hand in hand.

like a lot of others i wont be renewing my st next season if hess is still in charge, as much as i love the gills i cannot bear to watch them becoming a laughing stock.

and you know what, a small part of me is worrying about getting enough points to stay up.

what we need is scally to sell up, we know he's had offers, he just refuses to let go of his majority shareholding, so no sensible investor is going to hand over a wad of cash to scally!

    gillingham fc is slowly dying.

i thought when hess became manager again, he said that he would have players who wanted to play for the club again, by showing passion & desire, wanting to play for 90+mins...what happened ???

after an above average start, it seems we are having to go back to basics to try and rekindle that side of things, or is it hess just can't find that in a player no matter how many hours he puts in !

hess you as a player and who you were...is a different breed to the one your trying to manage now !

your shadow is even more clueless than you hess, when your biggest and best signing should of been a coach alongside you, and we are just delaying whats so obvious to all other observers to see !!!

Hess i have liked you as a committed player in the past who always gave everything, every game.
The pity is you cannot get the same commitment from all of the players on the pitch for the full 90+ minutes.
You also seem to struggle to play the players in their best positions or set the teams up with balance or a plan of play.
This season we are absolutely awful and you are living in cuckoo land if you think we will get promotion or in playoffs.
As it is i will be happy once we get to 52 points because i see us as candidates for relegation with the way things are and the method of play.
This season, apart from the Plymouth game where they had a player sent off and Bristol Rovers where the same happened
we have struggled to control a game and have just relied on the big hoof.
Start playing football, get forwards practising their shooting - Kedwell is firing powder puffs and missing golden opportunities - he played with power and passion at Wimbledon.
Please just get things sorted and get the players in their right positions, playing with passion for the whole game and not let other teams settle and dictate the play.
The next three games are critical - if we still have 41 points after them just walk and let someone else get us back on track before it's too late.
The fans can see the problems why don't/can't you listen and take their comments seriously or have a live forum at the club to discuss this position we are in.
I have followed this club for 61 years and they are 'my' club
but i feel we are one of the weakest in this league and do not have the moral fibre to survive at the moment = prove me wrong and start managing.

    Jesus Christ- He's still here.
Just as we thought and knew and now the man himself has admitted it HE WILL NOT BE SACKED BECAUSE OF HIS FREINDSHIP WITH SCALLY.What an appalling way to run a football club.
The only way any of us can protest is by staying away and that is exactly what i am now going to do.I would advise anyone else who feels the same to do so.

nobody has ever questioned your effort hess, or your passion and committment

but none of this can make up for lack of ability - my 92 year old Nan is just as passionate about the gills but it doesn't mean she would be any good as a manager

your comment about you and the chairman 'having a relationship' is the most worrying of all - he is either as stubborn as you and will keep you in the job just to save face, or you are misguidedly naive and think that you will never be sacked irrespective of how you perform

either way is a grave cause for concern

if you weren't so arrogant and stubborn and were able to be self-analytical, you woul dlook back on your second tenure and see what everybody else can see - it has been, put simply, poor, disappointing, with awful football, a less than fit squad, inconsistancies from day one, players our of position, no shape, devoid of ideas and even players unmotivated by you

every week you make bizarre statements to the media - 'the pitch is not big enough' or 'if i ha dbeen playing i would have kicked a few' the day after you complain about an opposition player's tackle to the fa - you do not even come across as a manager

leading as a captain by example on the field is one thing, but leading as a manager is entirely different, and you just do not have it - the evidence is there, and has been, every saturday at 3pm, since you came back

i for one will not be renewing my season ticket if you are still in charge - my first year without one since the mid 90's - ad many, many others will do the same

if you really loved the club, you would resign and keep some dignity - true love is all about scarifce and compromise - doing what is best for others, not for yourself

please, step down, for whatever reason, it is not working, it hasn't and it will not in the future
