Gillingham 0 Rotherham 0

Gillingham ended their six game losing streak with a goalless draw at home to Rotherham on Tuesday night.

The Gills had a number of chances in the first half to inflict some damage on the visitors but not enough potency in the second.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler was able to name the same starting eleven which started four days earlier at Port Vale.

The three-pronged attack of Danny Kedwell, Jo Kuffour and Gavin Tomlin were causing plenty of problems for the Rotherham defence early on but were unable to convert.

Kuffour had the best chance of the half, with 15 minutes gone, but after being played in on goal by United’s Johnny Mullins his low shot was deflected wide by keeper Rhys Taylor.

The chances continued for the Gills, with Curtis Weston missing the target when well positioned and young defender Jack Evans smashing a long-range effort inches away from the top corner.

Rotherham remained a danger throughout and towards the end of the half they enjoyed their own spell of pressure, which ended with the ball in the back of the net, but Lewis Grabban was booked for guiding it home with his arm.

Just before the break lively Gills forward Gavin Tomlin dragged a shot wide and the game remained goalless at half-time.

The Gills started the second half well, earning themselves a number of corner kicks in the opening moments. Despite the pressure Hessenthaler’s side approached the hour mark still looking for the breakthrough.

That lack of end product continued for the Gills as visiting keeper Taylor was rarely troubled. He did have to hold onto Chris Whelpdale’s scuffed effort from a corner in injury time but it was never troubling him.

Gillingham: Gazzaniga, King, Evans, Essam, Jackman, Payne, Whelpdale, Weston (O Lee 73mins), Kedwell, Kuffour, Tomlin. Subs: Richards, Martin, Montrose, Hawkes.

Rotherham: R Taylor, Harrison, J Taylor, Bradley, Mullins, Grabban, Raynes, Griffiths, Wood, Revell, Harrad (Warne 57mins). Subs: Tonge, Cresswell, Pringle, Warrington.

Attendance: 3,248

I think some of you must of gone to the Ebbsfleet game because last night was an improvement. Sure we didn't win and we didn't play brilliantly but its still a point. If I had post after the Port Vale game a comment saying we would draw against Rotherham you would of all laughed saying no way!

I think its going to be hard to get promoted but we can still do it, if not then Hess should go. I still don't think we can get anyone with experience in though but just a previous player with a love affair with scally.

Nice to see you again Ron! It hasn't been long enough but your statement on Stimson just shows you haven't changed. Lets get in a manager that made this club laughable by being the only team in the football league to not win away, but let be guess you have forgotten that!!!!

have to agree, king was superb last night, fingers crossed his fitness holds up, for him as well as us, top guy and deserves a bit of luck now, would certainly keep him next season if we can manage him like spurs do ledley king, perhaps on more of an appearance related deal?

conner essam and jack evans have both come in and done superbly, very promising starts

but our fitness levels are still shocking, for a professional football club, and there is no excuse

the formation of 4-3-3- as well clearly does not suit us - but is obviously being utilisied to accomodate kedwell in the team

hess, sentimentality and workrate alone must not be a consideration, the fact is that kedwell, depsite the qualities already mentioned, has struggled to score goals irrespective of the formation we play - the fact that all of our other strikers have made goals and got themselves into scoring opportunities proves that just maybe there is more of a gulf between the conference and this division than we may think, and he ceertainly was not worth the reported price tag of £100k

praise as well to young paulo gazzaniga who already looks more assured and confident than flitney - even when flitney comes back he must surely keep his place - and with only 1 year left we shoould look to extend his deal in the summer so he does not get snapped up for peanuts next summer, as most of our players do

sadly if we are still in league two next season (pretty much guaranteed now) we will struggle to hold onto tomlin, kuffour, jackman and probably jack payne if someone comes in with the right offer - and if hessenthaler is still manager we can kiss goodbye to s good proportion of supporters as well

i also think matt lawrence has been treated disgracefully, hess's public comments are shocking, hess was the one who continued to play him at right back, he would be okay at centre back alongside essam for example who has some pace - but seems to have been made a scapegoat by blameless hessenthaler. thanks for your hard work and efforts matt

Ron! You're back! I missed you.

Anyway, to the game. The problem last night believe it or not was our midfield. You can't play a 3 man midfield and expect 2 of them to go missing as often as Weston and Whelpdale did. I thought they were both pretty shocking to be honest. We need to play a 4-4-2...if we don't actually have any width, the least we should try and do is to ENCOURAGE width. Teams see us setting up that way and can immediately suss us out straight away. Too many times our front three don't play with any real fluency, Tomlin and Kuffour at times link up very promisingly but they are constantly making the same runs and leaving Kedwell isolated!

Our defence was much much better last night. A special mention to our centre backs, Essam and especially King I thought were immense. The latter as well tried his utmost to actually play the ball out from the back as opposed to just pumping a long ball up. Evans started very promisingly, and it's a shame we don't have another left back option because Jackman, as good as he is there, is much better pulling the strings in the midfield.

Here's to trying to take the positives!

The reason Evans and Essam were not given a chance was up until the last few weeks they really were not ready.Connor's loan to Dartford really got him ready for the 1st team.Ron will tell you how far Jack Evans was away from the 1st team only a few months ago. The lad has always been powerfull enough. But he has worked so hard to get in the side and deserves great credit few 1st year pro's break through so early in there 1st season. When you take into account how far he has come in a matter of weeks his rise to the team is quite amazing.

    dire, just dire

heard before the match that matt lawrence stormed off after being told he was surplus to requirements - hessenthaler really knows how to shift the blame to anyone or anything but himself - it was him who continually played lawrence at right back, when the guy simply does not have the legs for it - he could however, if needed, still do a job at centre back with someone pacier next to him such as connor essam - the problem has been playing him with frampton all season who is eaually as slow and cannot even win a header

so it looks as though hess has looked for a scape goat - anyone who thinks hess is this 'top bloke' should think again - he has one agenda - andy hessenthaler!

yet again teh 4-3-3- did not work, far too narrow - a formation played simply to acomodate the love child kedwell - who will never be a prolific scorer at league level - he also looks like he needs to lose a few lbs, but such is our poor overall level of fitness is it any wonder?

all of our other strikers have scored with ease from open play, irrespective of our formation, where they play etc

personally think we need to drop kedwell and play a balanced 4-4-2

both kuffour and whelpdale looke way of their games last night - it is obivous to anyone but the chairman that most of this bunch are simply not motivated by the manager, and certainly do not respect him

young lee barel touched the ball when he came on, so jury out but not a good 1st impression

jack evans and conner essam both did very well, and it beggars belief that they wwere not given their chance long ago, given the shambolic nature of our defence all season

i would be trying to tie a deal up for tomlin now which can be stamped when the window opens in the summer

disappointed with some of the refereeing decisions, in particular blowing for a foul instead of playing the advantage, when mark halsy refereed the stoke game he showed the gulf in class between premier league officals and some of the muppets who grace out league

on top of everything else, would you believe that you cannot get a black coffee at priestfield! my friend came instead of someone else who was sick, and was gobsmacked when the obnoxious teenager serving in the medway stand outlet told him it comes with the milk in it - laughable really - he was lsot for words!

this whole club is appallingly run, from the top dow, but with a level of arrogance that says pay up and shut up!

the chairman's 'this is the best squad ever' comments, laughable at the time, are now off the scale of embarrassing!

that is what you get though when you stick with a manager who thinks the pitch is not big enough at priestfile to play football on.

the five of us will not be renewing our season ticekts that's for certain

It's painful watching the gap between the Gills and the Play Offs grow at such an alarming rate, especially with Swindon sitting pretty at the top. But if I need cheering up, I think of all the plonkers who have immortalised Hess by tattooing his name on their body! I even know one bloke who named his son after him. Makes Homer Simpson look intelligent.

I agree with you on some points Ron, but to say Mark Stimson is the man for the job is quite laughable.

He scraped us a playoff promotion and also got us relegated twice. There are much better managers out there than him and quite frankly find the man one of the most arrogant men to ever be associated with the club with awful man-management skills.

I was right then wasn't I? At the start of the season everyone said I had it wrong. I was however spot on though as per usual. I told you all that we had no chance of a top 3 place and I told you all that we had no chance of a Play Off place. I told you all that we would finish 16th this season and that we will do!

Hessenthaler should have been sacked in October 2010. This is an unsackable manager due to his forever strong relationship with the chairman. Any other person in charge for the past 2 seasons would 100% have been sacked. Hessenthaler had the highest budget in League Two last season and the second highest budget in League Two this season. He has wasted ALL funds. There is nothing positive to say about him or this football club.

This club will next season struggle big time to stay in the Football League! I am not joking and I was not joking at the start of this season or last when all of you said we'd easily make the top 7. Next season we will be in that botton 4 dog fight. Blame Hessenthaler for wasting all funds and blame the chairman for not sacking him. This is the same chairman that 3 weeks into the start of the current season said that this was the best Gillingham side ever. The statement from the chairman could not be more wrong, the same can be said with all of your predicitions on here. I was right and you were wrong.

Our squad is pathetic. The defence is the worst to ever play within the Football League. The team display no tactics, no methods. Our players are too small and not physically fit enough. People had a pop at Rooney for going to Swindon Town, but look at him now, playing and top of the league. Some of our supporters are more pathetic than the people in charge at the club. How on earth were we ever going to finish top 7 with Andy Hessenthaler in charge? Did you wear a blindfold all of last season?

There is one man for this job and that is Mark Stimson. Cry and moan all you like, but he got the job done here in one season from this league. Hessenthaler will NEVER do it! Stimson beats Hessenthaler in every department and is a much better manager. Do not judge Stimson on his records at Barnet and Kettering as they had no funds. Stimson would have won League Two last season with that budget Hessenthaler had and that is a fact!

16th this season - time to take note!

1st half did ok but did not trouble them.

2nd half they sussed out our narrow midfield, played round us.

we huffed and puffed but ran out of ideas.

hess should have taken kedwell off and played a 4-4-2 but the fool wont take kedwell off and probably doesnt want to.

it was crying out for a change but yet again was found wanting.

he spent a lot of time looking at his feet.

kuffour looked fed up. think their keeper made 2 saves.

    another masterstroke by hess.

and 3248 to watch it. the viewing public have voted with their feet.

    useless.

Did not go, but this seems woeful. I am very much a Hess supporter, but time has ran out.

Why do we persist with this 4-3-3 rubbish??? We have a midfield being overrun that now cannot support the forwards who are not seeing enough of the ball due to the lack of strength and depth in Midfield.

This club we support needs a total overhaul.....from Chairman all the way down and this does pain me to say it as I am very much Pro Scally/Hess.
