Oliver Lee gives Gillingham extra attacking quality

Newcomer Oliver Lee will give the Gills additional quality going forward, believes manager Andy Hessenthaler.

The 20-year-old (pictured) joined from West Ham before the weekend on a month’s youth loan and was an unused substitute for Gillingham at Port Vale.

"He is a fantastic player and very technically correct," said Hessenthaler on his new recruit. "He will get forward and that’s his strength; getting forward from midfield."

Lee is on a professional contract with West Ham but is looking for a new club after being told his deal won’t be extended in the summer.

Hessenthaler feels the player could be one for the future and after a two-week trial, he will now take an extended look at the young midfielder.

The Gills boss said: "He will get his opportunity but he is only a young boy. He certainly could be one for the future. He also has a bit of experience as he has played (on loan) for Dagenham at this level. He has a fantastic upbringing and if he is anything like his dad (former England midfielder Rob) we have a player on our hands."

Lee scored one of the goals in Gillingham’s reserve game against a Chelsea XI last week. His loan runs up to and including the trip to Cheltenham on March 17.

Whilst I agree that I was a little bemused at the introduction of a central midfield player into a squad already bursting with players from the same position, it is evident that the likes of Weston & Montrose are just not performing, so why not bring somebody in like Ollie who actually WANTS to perform and is likely to put himself out there in order to try and impress? Give him a start tonight, make the likes of Weston fight for their place if they want to keep it.

I agree with the earlier posting, whereas i like Weston and belive that he is a truly gifted player he is failing to perform for the whole 90 + mins of a game and this season has been sorely lacking in effort and commitment(not the only one in the present squad)
and i think that from what i read about Lee he would certainly be worth a first half to show his potential -
    starting tonight(Please).
Also hope that some of the other plodders start to up their game and give us long suffering supporters something to shout about.UTG

'young and one for the future' - which means that in any team with hess as manager, you can come back and play when you are 47 when you have got some experience

anyone remember how reluctant hess was to field a certain young spiller, jarvis, etc

Adding a 'midfielder that likes to get forward' into a team already over run with central midfielders sounds like a great plan Hess!!! Add this to your reluctance to drop a striker and it's certain to sure up our defensive problems. OR NOT!! Are we now resorting to the 'try and score more than we concede' tactic?!?! Clearly running very short of ideas.

and this is the key quote from hess -

"He will get his opportunity but he is only a young boy. He certainly could be one for the future"

in other words he will continue playing the same tried and tested failing players - he is scared of playing anyone young.

    please hess just go.
