Andy Hessenthaler considers whether Gillingham's Simon King can play against Rotherham so soon after facing Port Vale

Garry Richards

Manager  Andy Hessenthaler may have to break up his new-look defence when Gillingham host Rotherham on Tuesday night.

Hessenthaler put together a completely different back four for the trip to Port Vale on Saturday but there are doubts whether Simon King can last another 90 minutes so soon.

His appearance at the weekend was his first full game since early October, when he was on loan at Plymouth.

Hessenthaler said: "King’s situation is something we will have to address in the next few days.

"Can it (his ankle) sustain Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday football from now until the end of the season? Because that pretty much is what it is. We are going to have to manage the situation but we will give him every chance to be available after Saturday’s performance."

Garry Richards, dropped at the weekend, could be called upon to take King’s place.

The Gills head into their midweek clash having lost six of their last seven League 2 games.

"It’s a real big week coming up with three home games (in a row) against decent sides," said Hessenthaler "Saturday’s performance will give us a little bit more confidence and the fans that travelled will have seen that. They were right behind the team and I thank them for that."

The only player with a chance of coming into the squad from injury is midfielder Charlie Lee (knee).

The whole defence did well tonight Connor and Jack Evans have won over any fans who were there tonight. They were both excellent.Callum Davies's time will come.I rate the lad. But Conner and Jack need to get a few games under there belts before Callum is given a chance. We have some good young defenders. The older players will have to up their game to get anywhere near the team on current form.

I think Davies would be the best replacement, Ok he is young and having 3 youngsters is bit of a risk, but When I've seen him he's looked good enough. He's also more likely to listen and play the ball on the floor more rather than Richards tactic of lets hoof it up there even tho we've got plenty of time and space. I also think he's got the physical strength. He's certainly bigger than Essam and both of them are the two quickest players.

If Kingy can play tonight and saturday, I know its a big ask for him but next tuesday against Hereford could be the Ideal time to let Davies have a start.

I also would let Carter give the left-back role but having myself suffered from a double fractured-leg you need to make sure that we ease him in. The rest of body becomes prone to niggly injuries aswell due to most of the concentration on building his leg up

    Up The Gills!

I agree that Simon King will possibly struggle but as I have said on so many occasions Gary Richards is not good enough at this level ,he is poor at the back and is the worst culprit when it comes to hoofing the ball from one penalty box to the other.

no...thats my point, we don't have a player to deal with any half decent opposition attack!

my whole point with this thread is, what we do have at the moment on the field from saturday, is a whole lot better than neanderthal man(richards)...get rid hess !!!

Marty Lawrence: legs have gone and has become a liability. Andy frampton: barely seen him win a header and zero pace. Simon king: great centre half but the obvious injury concerns. Connor essam and Callum Davies: bags of potential and bright futures ahead for both I'm sure but there is more muscle on my 13 year old son. Not Richards biggest fan as I mentioned but I don't see who else can challenge the more physical teams in this league

You honestly believe we have a defender in this squad that would've dealt with Dickinson any better g.i?

a couple of comments saying we need someone like richards with his strong physical presence in this division...shame he couldn't hold liam dickinson off then, when he scored for southend against us last week with ease!!!...think that proves my point...RICHARDS ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH...GET RID !
don't think frampton is much better than punt ricardo, but would rather have him on the bench/pitch...looks like framps is recovering quicker than first thought as well, so i'd rather framps than that excuse of a pro defender.

even give this joe carter ago at leftback, now he's returning to full training after a double leg fracture earlier in the season.

also agree the team are carrying weston & kedwell as well.
hopefully we will have charlie lee, danny spiller and adam birchall back soon, so we can rest or drop these players in question !

Completely agree with Cornish Pete. We are a league two team remember. As much as Richards frustrates me. A big lump is sometimes what's needed at this level. If king is fit enough then he needs to play. The young lads will get game time for sure thus season but rotherham have too much of a presence up front and I'm not sure they are ready enough for that

as much as richards is a lump, we need a presence to deal with harrad today, i think that could be a big ask of callum davies.

    i would play -

    gazzaniga
    evans richards king jackman
    whelpdale lee payne lee
    tomlin kuffour

have wheldale hugging the width, get oliver lee on the ball, and use the pace and obvious chemistry between kuffour and tomlin.

but thinking outside the box, and doing something different is something that hess does not understand.

expect the same tried and tested rubbish.

hess you are kidding if you think the PUNT POOR LOUT RICHARDS is the answer needed...NEVER WAS, NEVER WILL BE !!!

i suggest if simon king can't play, that you sign this jon fortune today or give callum davies a chance, because richards has never been up to the task and will only destroy what confidence and ability these lads have coming through into the side...no way should that idiot richards put on the shirt of gillingham fc again...sort it out hess...fast !!!
