Connor Essam hopes to get chance to prove worth in Gillingham's defence

Young defender Connor Essam is hoping he can be the answer to Gillingham’s problems at the back.

The centre-back was recalled to Priestfield from a loan spell with Dartford by manager Andy Hessenthaler after his Gills side conceded eight goals in their last two games.

Essam, 19, will have to wait a little longer for his opportunity – should Hessenthaler select him – after Saturday’s League 2 game at home to Hereford was postponed, but after 18 months of waiting he’s taking it all in his stride.

Essam said: "I am quite a patient person and when you are a youngster you have to be.

"Obviously the postponement was gutting but I am sure there will be another opportunity at some point.

"It’s the fittest I have felt and I am playing the best football I have ever played. That’s mainly thanks to the loan I had at Dartford.

"I am improving as a player and I am ready."

Conner sounds very level headed. I would like to wish him well.Having watched him quite a few times I feel he is worth giving a shot at the 1st team in the not to distant future.

Give all the kids a chance, it's the only way we'll find out if the're good enough. No point having half a dozen people in your sqaud you not prepared to use when necessary.
