Gillingham offer fans discounted coach travel to Plymouth Argyle as pay-back for defeat at Accrington Stanley

Gillingham fans who were offered a refund for their trip to Accrington can claim cheap coach travel to Plymouth as compensation.

The Gills lost 4-3 to Accrington last month and boss Andy Hessenthaler made a pledge to repay those fans for the journey.

After the game, he said: "We will pay for all the supporters who travelled because it’s not acceptable. Every player in the dressing room will contribute."

Hessenthaler and the coaching staff were also set to contribute.

But problems soon arose as many of the 261 fans present were not given ticket stubs upon entry to the Crown Ground at Accrington and only a fraction of the away travel went with the official supporters’ club.

The Gills have set a number of criteria for fans to claim their discount.

A match or coach ticket is acceptable, as is a train ticket or a receipt from the motorway services. Faces of some of the fans have also been featured in the Medway Messenger newspaper in a bid to help people prove they were at the ground.

The standard price for Gillingham fans to travel to Plymouth is £30 for adults and £24 for juniors, but the fans who went to Accrington can claim a seat for a tenner.

Anyone wanting to claim their discount must visit the club’s ticket office by Wednesday, February 29, with proof of their trip to Accrington.

The Plymouth game is on Saturday, March 3, with the coach departing the ground at 7am for the 250 mile trip.

What do you make of the offer? Is it acceptable? Comment below.

That is not the issue though. The fans weren't hammering down Hess and Scally's doors demanding their money back - it was Hess who put his foot in his mouth again and promised something that he has now reneged on.

It was his idea, he who wanted the players and coaching staff to learn a lesson by putting their hands in their pockets, and what have they learned now? Only that the manager doesn't follow up on what he says he will.

Very, very weak leadership. But then, why are we surprised?

I didn't go to the game, but at the end of the day, if you are willing to travel to Accrington (or any away game), you have to understand that the team will not always win. In this case, we only lost by a goal, there have been much worse defeats on the road in recent years (Shrewsbury 7-1) and I think that the offer available is fair enough, you can't expect to receive a refund everytime the team lose a game.

Best of luck for the weekend, 6 points would be nice!

Hess's naivety has shone through again, and shares a trait with his height...

    Childlike.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's been pulled up by Scally about this latest little financial teaser dangled under the fans noses. I wouldn't bet against this being the first little disagreement which could end up seeing Hess walking, as he's also blown the playing budget for 9 points of 7th place, now he's offering financial backing to those poor away fans without the chairman's agreeance it would seem causing this rather pathetic back tracking. I'm calling the police over this latest absolute turrrrdburglar of a decision.

Well thats it for me...this is the very last straw.. fed up with empty promises and a joke for a chairman ...supported the club for 35 years home and away...Gills thanks for the GOOD memories. All my belief in what is fair and decent regarding Gillingham Football Club is gone. I can no longer support a club such as this, I will (with a heavy heart)take my money elsewhere.

my father drove from his home in hull to watch the game, so a cheap coach from priestfield to plymouth is useless for him

also, what if you cannot make the plymouth game? you aren't acutally getting any money back, you are being offered a discount which still involves you spending more money

it is up there with last season's season ticket 'sale' which had to be re-worded for legal reasons - what a shambles of a club

although hessenthaler had good intentions, he should have thought before spoke, which sadly is a trait of his

i did wonder how they would logistically manage this when it was pay at the turnstiles

would of beenhappier for hessenthalr to swallow his pride, forget his ego and walk away from a job that is simply too much for him

Typical of Paul Scally. Once again shows his true contempt of Gillingham fans. And especially this hard core loyal band of folk who travel the length and breadth of England to watch the utter dross doled out by Hessenthalers unfit poorly prepared disorganised excuse for a football team. Hang your head in shame.
