Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler says defeat at Shrewsbury in League 2 was not acceptable

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler labelled his side’s performance at Shrewsbury as unacceptable.

Just a week after Hessenthaler’s men impressed against Premier League Stoke in the FA Cup, they slipped up when it mattered in League 2.

The Gills lost 2-0 and Hessenthaler admitted it could have been worse.

“We were nowhere near it,” he said. “We are not happy and I certainly am not. I am disappointed for the fans because we didn’t turn up.

“The body language didn’t look right, even in the warm-up where Nicky Southall (first team coach) said it didn’t look like we were at the races, and that showed in the performance.

“The whole team didn’t turn up and it’s not acceptable.”

The Gills barely tested the home keeper and finished the afternoon sitting seventh in League 2 – well adrift of the automatic promotion places which the club are targeting.

“I am the first to praise them but I will also be harsh on them if I need to be,” said a disappointed Hessenthaler. “They weren’t good enough and Shrewsbury wanted it more than us. That hurts and I have told them it should hurt them as well.

“If we want to achieve something this year we are kidding ourselves if we keep turning up and playing games like that.”

The Gills fell behind after half an hour and Hessenthaler added: "We told them that set-plays are important to defend against and the first goal came from a set-play. The ball was knocked down, there was a poor header away and it fell to their lad who volleyed it home. If you are not going to pick people up then you are going to get punished.”

The Gills had almost taken the lead themselves, with a rare chance, but Garry Richards headed wide.

“It was a free header on the back post and if that goes in then it might have settled us down and given us a bit of a lift,” said the Gills boss. “We needed something because we were nowhere near it. We huffed and puffed again in the second half and had to make some changes because we were chasing the game.

“But if it wasn’t for Ross Flitney (Gills keeper) and some better finishing from Shrewsbury it could have been more.”

Hessenthaler confirmed afterwards that new signing Jo Kuffour missed out due to his lack of fitness, after a bout of bronchitis.

as already mentioned, how many times have we heard this, this season and last?

the truth is there are still a good proportion of fans who will not have a word said against hess as a manager

sadly, we are not good enough for automatic promotion

our performances have been inconsistant since he came back, rnaging from poor to average, with very few 'really good' team performances

the wins this season have been due largely to individual moments of skill from some of our better players, in a very poor division

yes, we raised our game a bit for stoke, but so do most lower league sides in those circumstances - we did not put on as good a display as against villa however 3 years prior

our team is unbalanced, unmotivated, disorganised, lacking discipline and unfit compared to lots of the oppostiion

anyone who thinks a top 3 is still possible is dreaming - we would have to have a win percentage of almost 75% - which Hess has NEVER achieved in the league

all the above issues are down purely to Hess, nobody else - the chairman has given him a fortune to spend this season - what manager in their right mind would go out and sign three central midfielders when we already had several, but had zero wingers in the squad?

hess has also managed to publically contradict himself on several occasions and made bizarre statements that show just how inept he is - after playing against 10 man crawely and not managing a shot on target the entire first half 'it is hard to play against ten men etc' - then after we only just beat aldershot when we have ten men 'obviuously they had an advantage as we only had ten men' i also like his comment that priestfield is not big enough to play 'football' on - laughable.

as for saturday, both lawrence and frampton were culpable in both goals, and are both too slow to play together - lawrence's legs have sadly gone, and he should be a sub at best now

go back to 2009 when we got promoted and we had the backbone you need to be successful according to a certain mr clough - goalkeeper, centre bakc and striker - royce, king and jackson

on saturday we had flitney - ok but not in royce's league, lawrence - too old and oli - enough said

442 with weston or whelpdale up front, who can at least hit the target, would of been better

this season like last will falter into one big anit climax and disaappointment - i would love us to go up in the top 3 with hess as manager - but that is now beyond our grasp.

The picture above fills me with dread, to think that our future prospects rest with their descisions is very depressing.

Maybe they were nowhere near it because they knew they had a lame donkey upfront, whatever they created Oli would fluff. Why oh why do we still persevere with Oli - has Priestfield become social security? Him aside I do think we've got a pretty good squad this year, looking forward to Tomlin and Kuffour getting going and hopefully Keds will be back before too long. 10pts is a long way but its do-able!! Look whats happened in the premiership! UTG

What concerns me is that the management/coaching team identified that the players were not right during the warm up.
What did they do to get the players right?
Motivation is a very big part of the management responsibility, it sounds like they failed.

It was always going to be a hard game but seriously why play Oli on his own up front?. I'm disappointed with the result but at least we are still in the playoffs. UTG!!

I don't care if i get the expected abuse but the manager is letting the Chairman down, especially after the backing Scally has given him regards funds to sign players.
Eight defeats already means a top 3 finish is a pipe dream and persivering with the likes of Oli is beyond believe.Your damn right it's not good enouth let's have no more talk about automatic promotion.
