Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler was delighted his team won despite Joe Martin's sending off

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler was delighted to see his side fight against adversity to claim a win over Aldershot.

Hessenthaler (pictured) branded Joe Martin’s second half dismissal a “joke” but was thrilled to see his side hold on to take the points on Monday and climb back up to sixth in League 2.

He said: “It was a fantastic win for us under the circumstances. We had to bounce back (from the Dagenham defeat) and we had to play with 10 men for half an hour.

“We showed that siege mentality here, where we are 1-0 up and are not going to get beat or concede. It was a tremendous effort from the boys.”

In the first half the Gills struggled to impose their game on Aldershot.

“We didn’t really hurt them enough,” he said. “They frustrated us and they dropped in really deep so we couldn’t get down the sides of them.

“It was all in front of them really and it got a bit frustrating for the boys.”

A tactical switch at the break brought joy to the Gills in the opening minute of the first half.

“We made an adjustment to go to a four-man midfield with a bit of width as Danny Jackman went out on the left and Chris Whelpdale on the right. Curtis (Weston) played a bit higher up alongside Danny Kedwell.

“We made a great start to the second half and it pretty much worked straight away. I thought in that spell we looked bright and we could have got another.”

Jackman took his personal goal tally to four with the winning goal.

“It was a good strike,” said the Gills boss. “Lewis Montrose, who had made a great run, laid the ball off to Curtis. He moved the ball around and then it goes to Jackman.

“He showed fantastic feet, worked the opening well and finished with a fantastic strike. I am pleased for him.”

But the Gills were forced to battle with 10 players after Martin picked up a second yellow card. His first had come so early, Hessenthaler admitted he missed it.

“I didn’t realise he had (already) been booked,” said Hessenthaler.

“Nicky Southall (first team coach) said he was off because he had already been booked in the first 50 seconds. I have to say that’s a joke. Fifty seconds? Give him a chance to get into the game.

“Give him a warning and next time you are in the book.”

The Gills in the end hung on to claim the win.

I agree that defence has improved but feel at lot of that is down to the way that Jack Payne sits in front of the centre backs. He is putting in tackles and becoming available to the short ball. But agree that Lee must be brought in at right back but given we have lost Martin.I would play Lee,Richards,Lawrence,Frampton and Jackman across the back so we would have a bit of width also as good defence as we can against their difficult long throws etc.
As for new signings I really hope we can get Kuffour.I really know very little about Tomlin Would he not be a sort of Oli replacement?
As for Ron I think I have met him he is about sixty-ish.Yes I believe the guy is for real and writes what he believes. The others were clearly not Gills fans at all.

I felt we defended well as a unit yesterday even after Martin was sent off. I did feel that the referee may have got it wrong with brandishing a yellow card after 50 seconds, but I could always see Martin being sent off due to the speed and skill of their McGlashan. At times we didn't really maximise our width to its potential especially in the first half when Whelpdale was playing on the left and Weston on the right. We were much better in the second half however and we deserved to win the game.

My only real concern would be playing Matt Lawrence at right back. Ok he won the man of the match and he made some good tackles, but whenever we lost the ball and he had got far up the pitch we had become very vunerable to attack from their left wing. Also his crossing ability isn't really that of what a right back should be so for the Stoke game I feel that Hess should maybe revert Charlie Lee back to right back especially if Etherington is playing.

If anyone thinks this is an attack on Lawrence it is not, as I feel he is still a very good centre-back, but for me not an ideal replacement at right back.

With regards to Gavin Tomlin, he was born in Gillingham which may help us but he is still under contract at Dagenham & Redbridge and thus would command a fee.

    Up The Gills!

I think it's safe to say now that the Ron's and Dave's of this world were merely wind-up merchant(s) who were staying up past their bedtimes.

Anyway, as for the peformance, Warnz is correct, gutsy is definitely the word for it. With a depleted squad we did what we had to do, kept a clean sheet, got three points, and made sure that we bounced back from Friday.

Martin's sending off was stupid and he'll have plenty of time to reflect on this when he doesn't feature on Saturday. Both challenges against the tricky McGlashan were cynical and not at all subtle.

Hearing Hessy's post match interview, he mentioned that they are looking to bring in two new faces in time for the Stoke game. These are thought to be Jo Kuffour, and Gavin Tomlin, a free agent formerly of Yeovil and Dagenham.

Thoughts on these possibile signings, and what team we should put out on Saturday?

Nice to have the comments section the way it should be.

I wonder what Dave and Ron make of these last 11 games ..and I'd still like to know what Ron does when 1000+ Gills fans, away from home, sing Hessenthaler's Barmy Army.

Good result, gutsy performance. Well done lads.
