Gillingham defender Garry Richards says players need to pull together after AFC Wimbledon defeat

Gillingham defender Garry Richards has called on his team-mates to "man up" following Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at home to AFC Wimbledon.

The centre-back wasn’t holding back in his critical appraisal of the performance, which left Gills sitting outside the play-off positions in League 2.

He said: "We have put ourselves in a position where we wouldn’t have thought we would be a couple of weeks ago. But we are the people who put ourselves there and we are the people who need to get ourselves out of it. It’s time to man up.

"We need to be critical and you have to be a man to take the criticism. We all take the plaudits and the pats on the back when they come our way, everyone is willing to accept them, so you have to take the criticism as well."

Gillingham conceded four goals in the final half-hour at Priestfield to lose 4-3.

Richards (pictured) added: "As a team, defensively, we switched off for all four goals and it was real schoolboy stuff.

"It is hard to get our heads around it because it wasn’t as if they were creating chances and openings at ease. It was just poor and it comes down to mentality and we switched off. To allow it to happen is a bit embarrassing."

The defeat leaves the Gills 11 points off the top three places with 20 games left.

Richards isn’t giving up hope, but knows the performances must improve.

He said: "It is not impossible. We never give up hope, I certainly don’t.

"Between now and the end of the season we need to pull together and I am sure we will."

fair enough you can blame hess for not being able to motivate these players but motivation must come from within aswell surely???

take whelpdale for example. that fella seems to be totally lacking in confidence. these players don't seem to be enjoying their football, their work. it's just a job to them. but they are throwing their careers away. all the time they are playing like that they will never progress. montrose is the same and weston. they seem miserable out there and that is just wrong, especially when you look at the great position we are in and what we can potentially achieve. it was the same under stimson. we went up but it was the most unconvincing promotion that i have ever known. these players should be on fire but they aren't and i dont know what it is. hess is doing the best job he can and we wont find another manager who is more committed that's for sure.

strutter, these players in question are not goodenough mate and haven't been from the beginning...yes every now and again they put in a decent game, but on a whole they are very very average at best!

we need players like kingy, chris hope, barry ashby, ady pennock, dave martin, matt fry(loan), richard green, mark saunders, paul haylock, mark patterson...you get the jist!...players of that ilk!

kingy yes is ideal, but even these reserve games he's played of late, a day or so later he feels the effects and can't player for a week or two...so i would be very surprised if he was to make a telling difference...though would love to be proved as they say...wrong!

give essam and davies ago along with a loan or two.

it needs to happen because know matter how much they talk themselfs up...richards, lawrence, fish, martin, whelpdale, weston, oli and lee are not up to it...though in lee and whelpdales case we know they are! so whats does this say about hessy, only that is he possibly not the motivator we need him to be!!!

personally i think simon king should be starting anyway. he's THE best defender that i have ever seen play for gillingham. my only concern is that he is not up to it physically anymore. if his body holds up then we will have no worries with him that's for sure, he's a great player and i'm sure that whoever plays alongside him will benefit from him too

richards is right. its all very well to single out lawrence and richards but i have seen the goals and as garry quite rightly says we didnt defend 'as a team'. the whole team has to defend from front to back.

i think his comments are encouraging. if the players had kept quiet then it would have seemed like they were sulking after hessenthalers rollicking.
